During the cold season, it is pleasant to bask in the warm rays of the sun and let in the bright daylight entering the house through the windows. But in the summer, you often want to protect the house from scorching rays and shelter the green inhabitants of the windows from the merciless sun. Blinds can be a successful solution to this issue; they are convenient, practical and beautiful way fence off the room from exposure to external irritants.
Except protective functions blinds fit perfectly into modern interior, can become the main decoration of a window or an addition to curtains. Complex multi-layer curtain designs are often used to decorate windows. Closing windows with such curtains is not always convenient; the intricate shape of the curtains is disrupted, adjusting it every day becomes a difficult task, and it is necessary to close the windows from prying eyes at night. In such cases, blinds that cover only the surface of the glass will come to the rescue. In the daytime, if there is no need to cover the windows, the blinds can be easily folded, filling the room with daylight.

History of blinds

There is no unambiguous definition of the appearance of blinds. The origin of the name is attributed to French, and translated it means jealousy. Therefore, they believe that blinds owe their appearance to medieval Europe. They were hard wooden structures covering a door or window opening. They were used as shutters that let daylight into the rooms, but protected them from direct sunlight.

According to other sources, blinds appeared in eastern countries, where they are jealous of hiding women from prying eyes. Therefore, it was convenient to use a blind design for the windows, ensuring the penetration of the necessary daylight, but completely hiding the room from outside views.
In any case, transforming and changing, blinds have survived to this day and gained particular popularity in the middle of the 20th century.

The designers liked this method of decorating and protecting windows. Began to use modern materials for their manufacture and improved the design, creating functional and comfortable blinds that can decorate any interior.

Buying store-bought blinds is a quick and easy solution for window decoration. But a number of inconveniences may arise. Over time, dust and dirt accumulate on the surfaces, so they will need to be washed. This activity will require a lot of time and effort.

DIY wallpaper blinds can be a good alternative to expensive store-bought ones. They have a number of advantages. One of the important ones is the low cost of such arrangement of the window opening. They do the same if they want to change the decor of the windows, to introduce something new into the familiar interior. A simple and cheap replacement of blinds can transform a room, creating a comfortable atmosphere.

You can use wallpaper that contrasts or matches the color of the curtains, or make stripes different colors or decorate the panels with any hand-made design. Any imagination is appropriate in decorating windows using blinds made from wallpaper made by yourself.

It is very convenient to use wallpaper blinds not only on room windows. Large balcony openings or a veranda at the dacha will be perfectly protected by such blinds. It's economical and convenient way do big windows inaccessible to sunlight and prying eyes.

Turning wallpaper into blinds

IN modern world, when everything can be bought in a store, and, if desired, even without leaving home on the Internet, the hand-made direction is becoming widespread. It consists in making various items household items with your own hands, from scraps available materials. Such products can not only decorate a room, making it cozy, but also be useful and functional. To figure out how to make blinds from wallpaper with your own hands, let's look at step-by-step instructions.
To work you will need:

wallpaper remnants;
stationery knife and ruler;
Double-sided tape;
hole punch or awl;
braid or strong thread;
retainer
To make blinds, you can take any leftover wallpaper; non-woven paper will last longer. You can use wallpaper for painting, especially if you want to put some kind of design on it. The color is selected depending on the preferences of the owners, but it should be taken into account that White color will give uniform diffuse light. Darker colors will let in less daylight, so they will create a dim atmosphere in the room.

Simple accordion

Blinds can cover only the surface of the glass or partially cover the frame. The size of the piece of wallpaper that will be needed to make the curtain will depend on the selected parameters. After measuring the width and height, cut out the panel. The width is kept constant, and 20 to 50 percent of the length is added to the height and cut out. This extra length will be needed to create an accordion; the frequency of bends and their density in the finished product will depend on the added value.
On the reverse side, you should mark the places where the paper bends, the optimal size of each bend is about 3 cm. If desired, you can make wider or narrower bends, their size will change the thickness of the product, making it more voluminous or flat. Markings must be made on both sides of the panel to make it easier to fold the accordion evenly, avoiding distortions.

Based on the marks, you need to carefully fold the panel into an even accordion. When folding, be sure to ensure that the folds match in size and that distortions and protrusions do not form at the edges. For convenience, the upper bend should open outward, and the lower one should form a complete step.

To seal the top edge, the last step can be glued together. The accordion-folded strip can be placed under a load or fastened, and left for a while so that the folds are ironed well and get used to their position.
You can use the resulting corrugated strip as blinds.

To raise the curtain to open the window, it is secured with one clip in the middle or two on the sides of the strip. The wallpaper blinds shown in the photo are in a simple way creating a protective curtain.

Peacock tail

To add decorativeness and make the operation of blinds more convenient, other mechanisms are used that fix the raising and lowering of the curtains. Using a ruler, mark the middle of the strip; this is the location of the future puncture for threading the braid. Using a hole punch or an awl, make a hole in the marked center of the strip.

The punctures must be symmetrical, at the same level, so they must be made in one movement. To make the holes more durable, especially on the lower and upper stripes, you need to stick small pieces of ordinary tape on the wrong side, at the puncture sites. And after that, pierce the holes again. The tape will prevent the paper from tearing and this will extend the life of the blinds.
Measure a strong thread or braid according to the height of the window, with a small margin. Thread a thread through the holes on the strip and secure it to the top edge.

To securely fix the thread, it is glued double-sided tape, which is attached along the entire length of the top strip. Subsequently, a strip of tape will serve as a fastening for the blinds to the window opening.

A fastener is placed on the lower edge of the thread. Using it, it will be possible to secure the curtains, assembled, at different heights. To weight the thread, you can use an end cap or a large bead attached to its lower edge. Thanks to the end cap, the thread will not get tangled or bent; it is more convenient to hold onto it when moving the curtain up or down.

If, when unfolded, you need a flat bottom edge of the blind to close window glass completely, then it is left to fall freely. To create a beautiful decorative semicircle reminiscent of a peacock's tail, the bottom strip is glued together. To do this, glue pieces of double-sided tape on it, on both sides of the hole, and glue them together, forming a beautiful fan. For reliable fixation, you can glue the last 3-4 folds in the middle.

Having spread the blinds to the height of the window opening, so that the curtain completely covers it, the cords are connected and secured using a bead, end cap or knot. You can think of anything else decorative decoration, holding which will conveniently move the blinds.
To ensure that the lower edge of the curtain does not lose its even shape, bending and breaking over time, it must be strengthened. To do this, you can glue a suitable size piece of cardboard or any other onto the bottom strip from the wrong side. comfortable material. This design will make the lower part of the blinds heavier and make it more durable and reliable.

The craftswoman tells and shows in detail about creating blinds with her own hands from wallpaper in the video:

A photo of DIY wallpaper blinds shows how varied they can be. They look impressive and original in any place and interior.

Making blinds is an interesting and creative process, which results in a beautiful and functional household item, useful and convenient. When creating blinds from wallpaper, any craftswoman puts a piece of her soul into decorating her home and making it comfortable. Having protected one of the apartment windows with such spectacular curtains, it will be hard to stop; you will probably want to decorate other window openings in such an unusual way.

One of the most convenient and prettiest curtain options is blinds. The trouble is that it's enough expensive pleasure, and not everyone can afford it. But you can make your own blinds from paper or fabric. The result will not be exactly the same, but homemade blinds will perform the main functions: hide the room from the bright sunny color and decorate the window.

Paper made from wallpaper

Do-it-yourself paper blinds (as in the photo) are an excellent temporary solution for those who cannot yet afford purchased ones, but are planning to do so soon. They look impressive and protect from the sun. Any sheet of thick paper a quarter longer than the window opening will do.

But it’s easier and more convenient to make blinds with your own hands from wallpaper (for example, non-woven wallpaper for painting). The width of the product will be equal to the width of the opening. It is better to choose a tape for lifting blinds to match the color of the paper. You will need a cut longer than the window, with allowance for knots and bows.

If the material is not monochromatic (for example, wallpaper with a pattern), when making blinds with your own hands from paper (as in the photo), you need to make sure when cutting that the pattern is even and does not skew to the side.

The cut sheet must be folded like an accordion. The width of the folds is 3-5 cm. You need to ensure that the folds along the entire length are the same width. If your eye is not good, you should mark the canvas with a pencil.

All the resulting folds must be collected into one strip, mark the middle and punch holes with a hole punch (you can use an awl or a screwdriver). To prevent the holes from spreading, you can secure them with tape on both sides and punch them again. Next, you need to thread a ribbon or cord through the holes and straighten the sheet. Seal the top bar of the curtain together with the cord with tape.

Video “Do-it-yourself blinds from A4 paper”:

Glue a small piece of paper to the bottom edge on one side. Connect the two lower corners and glue them together using this piece. The result will be a “peacock tail” pattern. Pull the cord through the remaining hole on the fold to the wrong side. Put on the clamp - it will be used to regulate the opening of the curtain. The end of the lace can be decorated with a bow, bead, or tassel.

Do-it-yourself horizontal blinds from paper are ready. Now you can hang them on the window with double-sided tape.

Tip: another option is to thread two parallel cords through the curtain. So there will be no semicircle at the bottom, the product will come out similar in style to purchased blinds.

Fabric

To make fabric blinds with your own hands you need:

A rectangular piece of fabric is cut out, equal to the width and height of the window with allowances for seams, a bottom pocket and a fastening at the top. The side edges are processed, a pocket is sewn at the bottom for a weight bar (it will be suitable as a bar wooden slats along the width of the window or a piece of aluminum profile).

The treatment of the top depends on how you plan to mount the blinds. It can be hung with Velcro on wooden beam and fix it on the wall, as well as attach it to the finished cornice. The piece required for fastening is measured, the rest of the fabric is marked for future folds.

The optimal width of the fold when making fabric blinds with your own hands is 10-20 cm, the distance between the marking lines should be twice as large. When marking, you need to make sure that there are no residual residues left on top.

You should stitch the braid along the marked lines and thread thin plastic slats into the resulting pockets: they will hold the shape of the folds.

Next you need to mark lines for the vertical laces and sew rings onto the braid along these lines. To standard small window Three laces are enough. Required amount rings will be equal to the number of folds multiplied by three.

Video “Do-it-yourself fabric blinds”:

The laces are threaded through and the curtains are secured with knots at the bottom. The upper rings are hung on the cornice (you need to make hooks on the cornice for this purpose if they are not there). Through all the upper rings, the cords are routed to one side. To fix them on the wall you need to nail a bracket or hook. The curtain is ready.

Wooden

Can be done wooden blinds with your own hands with rotating slats, like store-bought ones.

Bamboo blinds

The amount of material is calculated: the height of the window opening is divided by the number of lamellas. The width of the lamella is no more than 12 cm (in the closed position the plates do not go end-to-end, but with an overlap of 1 cm, this centimeter must be added to the width of each plate).

The length of the horizontal lamella should be slightly narrower than the opening in order to fit into it and completely cover the glass. Wood planks may have to be ordered from a workshop.

Tip: you can make curtains and blinds with your own hands, but single blinds made of bamboo look best on windows. In addition, it is lighter and more durable.

At the ends of the lamellas you need to attach attachments - small planks. Drill holes in the upper attachments and insert hooks for hanging curtains. At the top and bottom of each plate, 12 mm from the nozzle, you need to drill small 2 mm holes for the laces - necessary to rotate the slats.

Video “How to make wooden blinds. Technology":

The laces are threaded through the holes and glued to each connection point. The blinds are attached to the top rail with prepared hooks. A cord is threaded through the fastening hooks and looped down.

In a similar way you can make vertical blinds do it yourself, only in this case the slats are cut based on the width of the window and attached vertically. For top fastening, it is better to use a profile cornice with runners - they tend to turn and will turn the slats when the cord is pulled.

Roller blinds

If you are going to make roller blinds with your own hands, then the best option versions - fabric with braid ties. This design is manually adjustable.

The dimensions of the blanks are equal to the width and height of the window with seam allowances on all four sides. The fabric is made double, and two fabrics are needed, for the front and back sides. The blanks are sewn together on the reverse side. One side remains open, through it the canvas is turned outward. This seam is also closed.

A tight pocket is made for the top bar - strips for attaching the roller blind to the frame. The strap is threaded into the pocket. You can wrap the fabric around the block and secure it with a stapler.

A pocket is also sewn at the bottom of the product and a strip is inserted.

Video “We make roller blinds for windows with our own hands”:

A ribbon or braid is thrown over the top bar. Its ends should hang below the finished canvas from the face and from the back. The tape is secured at the top with a stapler. When raising the curtain, the canvas is wound onto the bottom rail and fixed with the ends of the tape at the desired height.

It’s up to you to decide what type of blinds to make with your own hands (fabric, wood, paper, wallpaper, horizontal or vertical, regular or roller blinds).

Blinds are a light-protective accessory that is very popular due to its practicality and functionality.

On sale you can find a large assortment of these beautiful and stylish products, differing from each other in their design and cost. And with a little imagination, you can even save on purchasing them and make your own blinds.

Before you start making them, it is advisable to view photos of blinds in real interiors, and also decide whether they will occupy the entire space of the window opening and the nearest wall.

Such curtains can be mounted on individual window sashes, without restricting access to the window frame handle, as well as on the partition located above the window.

Accordingly, you need to calculate the dimensions window sashes, or the distance between the side slopes, as well as the height from the upper slope of the window to the window sill. In the latter option, it is necessary to provide an overlap of at least 5 cm on the side walls and about 10 cm under the cornice.

Pleated paper blinds in the shape of a semicircle

Having decided to understand the question of how to make blinds, it is worth recognizing that one of the most inexpensive and easiest to manufacture are blinds made of paper using the pleated method.

They make it easy to refresh the interior or protect window glass during renovation work.

To make this type of curtains you will need:

  • a single piece of paper (plain or with a pattern);
  • scissors;
  • ruler or straight bar;
  • pencil;
  • paper clips;
  • awl;
  • durable cord;
  • double sided tape;
  • cardboard;
  • fasteners for clothes or bulky buttons.

Work should be performed on a flat, free surface.

Instructions on how to make pleated blinds with your own hands are as follows:

  • Prepare a paper strip. Its width should exceed the dimensions of the window sash by 0.5 cm on each side.
  • Draw strips of the required width (up to 4 cm) on the back of a sheet of paper. It should be remembered that the wider the strip, the more massive the blinds will look.
  • Fold the paper where the lines were drawn. If the paper is very thick, you can first use a ruler to draw sharp scissors along it so that the folds are more even.
  • Fold the entire strip of paper into an accordion shape and secure the edges and middle with clamps.
  • Measure the middle of the resulting structure and pierce it through with an awl.
  • Insert the cord into it.
  • Tie a knot or fasten a button at the top.
  • To make the base more rigid, glue cardboard strips to its outer planks.
    Insert the clips into the bottom of the cord.
  • Using double-sided tape, attach the blinds to the inside of the curtain rod.
  • Attach tape to the tip of the bottom edge of the blind and make the bottom in the shape of a semicircle.

Pleated paper blinds with straight edge

Straight pleated wallpaper blinds are made using the same technology, but here you will need three rows of cords: 1 is placed in the middle and 2 along the edges with an indentation of 3-5 cm.

Instead of paper, you can use reed sticks and newspaper tubes.

Horizontal blinds: manufacturing diagram

For the manufacture of horizontal blinds required:

  • boards, sheets of plastic, plywood or plexiglass;
  • sawing machine;
  • Grinder;
  • drill;
  • liquid products for processing wood products (stain, varnish);
  • glue;
  • cord;
  • wooden beam for cornice;
  • fasteners.

The sequence of actions in the manufacture of such window curtains is as follows:

  • Cut strips from existing material.
  • Finish the edges (sand and round a little).
  • All wooden elements prime, cover with stain or varnish and dry.
  • Mark the center of each individual plate and make holes using a drill. Do the same with the cornice and screw a small ring into it in the middle.
    Lay the pieces out on a flat surface.

After this, you can master the technology of how to install blinds on windows:

  • Thread the cord into one of the side holes of the curtain rod and secure the first one with a knot or stapler.
  • Pass the cable into a similar hole in the slats, each time tying a knot or securing a button under the lowest lamella (this can also be done using glue).
  • Insert the cord from the opposite side in the same way.
  • Perform the central lacing without using glue so that the slats move freely along the cord.
  • Design lifting mechanism blinds as follows: starting from the bottom bar and reaching the eaves, throw the cord through a pre-fixed ring, then with inside curtains, lower the cord down, connect both ends and thread it into the stopper.
  • Attach the brackets to the wall and hang the finished protective curtains on them.
  • Check their operation by pulling the cord located in their central part.

Vertical blinds

Blinds can be not only horizontal, but also vertical, and made from various materials, including from lining. Such curtains look quite massive, but very original.

To make them you will need a cornice and fittings. The strips unraveled on a special machine must be made to the same length, sanded and varnished.

Note!

Then, using self-tapping screws, you need to attach metal clips to them, and then proceed to final assembly designs.

You can also make your own vertical slats from wood or plastic (including plastic bottles), or sew fabric blinds.

Manufacturing of the rotating mechanism

In order for the blinds to move up and down, as well as relative to their axis, it is advisable to equip them with a rotating device.

Its function can be performed by a strong cord or a strip of fabric, the appropriate length of which is considered to be twice the height of the blinds plus at least 10 cm for the retainer.

The tape must be glued to the end part of each plate. Next, pass the cord through the ring fixed in the cornice, then down from the inside of the blinds, without gluing, then connect both ends and put on the stopper.

By pulling one edge of the tape, you can give the slats vertical position, and behind the other - arrange them horizontally.

Note!

As can be seen from the description, making and installing blinds is not particularly difficult. Even a beginner can do all this.

Wallpaper blinds in the interior (photo)

Today I want to tell you how to make paper blinds with your own hands. The process of making paper blinds is not at all complicated, and the result is always wonderful. Paper curtains are beautiful, inexpensive and functional.

There is information online that pleated paper ones came to us from the USA, and that they were first made there. But I want to tell you that this is not so. The first paper curtains were made by women in post-war period in Soviet Union. The times were difficult, and women had to figure out how to make their home beautiful and cozy, using the means at hand. Not only were they decorated in this way.
Of course, you can purchase ready-made blinds and not bother making them. But stores can offer you blinds in only a few colors.

On your own you will be able to implement a lot interesting ideas in window decoration. There is also a difference between purchased paper blinds - they must be lifted by hand and secured with a special clamp.

For work we will need:

  • paper (tracing paper, );
  • scissors, stationery knife;
  • Double-sided tape;
  • pencil;
  • cord or braid;
  • stopper or stationery clip;
  • long ruler.

Progress

I have several rolls of wallpaper left from the last renovation. I decided to use them to make blinds. The window in the kitchen is divided into two unequal parts. For the larger part of the window I had to increase the width of the wallpaper I used, and for the smaller part of the window I cut the wallpaper. The length of the wallpaper must be approximately 30 cm longer than the length of the window.

The most tedious and time-consuming part is marking and bending future blinds. I made the width of the fold 3.5 cm (you can make the width of the folds differently, at your discretion). In order for the wallpaper to fold well and hold the folds, I followed the markings, pressing lightly, with scissors.

You can speed up the work if you find a long ruler so that its width is equal to the width of the fold.

If the ends of the accordion are not even, they must be trimmed with a utility knife.

I secured the “accordion” with stationery clips and left it overnight so that the paper “remembered” the desired shape.

The hardest thing for me turned out to be making a hole for the cord. The thickness of the accordion did not allow using a hole punch. Then I asked my neighbor, a craftsman, to drill a hole with a drill. The job was done in less than a minute.

I used a thin white ribbon as a cord. I secured it with double-sided tape. I used a stopper at the bottom to hold the paper blinds. I also taped it with double sided tape. top part blinds.

Since I live on the first floor, I did not attach the blinds below in a semicircle. My paper blinds cover the window glass completely.

Paper blinds have become very popular. Many needlewomen began to make paper blinds for their apartments. Here's a look at the photos of paper blinds made by the craftswomen of the handicraft site.
