All the beaches of Samui and the best beaches of the island - a description from personal experience. Choosing the best beach on Koh Samui

Description of areas and beaches of Koh Samui. Where is the best place to relax and live?

The island is like a big village, there are no cities here - the division into districts is along the beaches) There are almost no condominiums, one- and two-story houses, complete island relaxation.

At the same time, the island has almost everything necessary for comfortable life: large shopping centers, banks, hospitals, very atmospheric bars, cozy cafes and luxurious restaurants.

What is the best area to live in Koh Samui?

The choice of Samui area depends on whether you want privacy or, on the contrary, live in a busy place. And whether you plan to use a bike or a car.

If you don't drive a bike, it's better to choose more "residential" areas. In my opinion, the most optimal choice- Lamai. There are supermarkets, cafes, and the sea within walking distance. And some sights.

Other areas along the ring road are also suitable: Chaweng, Bo Put and Maenam.

And also, if you are interested in renting housing on Samui, you can contact the company Islandhouseforrent.

Description of Samui beaches

There are many beaches on Koh Samui, all of them are beautiful, but not all are suitable for swimming.

The most beautiful sunsets on Koh Samui can be seen in Nathon and Lipa Noi, in Bang Rak (starting from Big Buddha and east), and in Plai Laem. The most beautiful sunrises in Chaweng and Lamai.

Lipa Noi Beach

Lipa Noi is a beach in the west of Koh Samui, located just south of Nathon.

There are not many houses for long-term stays here, but there are beautiful villas and hotels.

For example, Nikki Beach. There is an excellent beach club where various parties are often held and films are shown open air. And on a normal day, it’s very nice to lie on their sunbed in the shade with a cocktail in your hands.

Lipa Noi has the most beautiful sunsets.

But the infrastructure is not very good. There are several cafes, 7/11 Family Mart stores, but large supermarkets are quite far away.

You can swim at Lipa Noi only in winter time, in the low season there are strong low tides and the sea goes far from the coast.

Nathon Beach

Nathon is located just north of Lipa Noi. This is the administrative center of the island and is more suitable for 1-2 nights than for a long stay.

There is no swimming beach here, except for a small patch.

In the off-season there are strong low tides.

But there are gorgeous sunsets, a bus station, a ferry crossing, a cheap market, banks and a public hospital.

Bang Po Beach

Bang Po is located in the northwest of Samui, above Nathon. This is a very quiet, secluded place.

There are quite a lot of houses that are rented both daily and for long periods. There are very few cafes and other amenities of civilization here, except for 7/11.

But you can live right by the sea!

In winter the sea is deep enough for swimming. There is some natural debris (things that fell from palm trees), but overall it is clean. In summer there are strong low tides.

Ban Tai Beach

Ban Tai - favorite place rest and wintering of Russian families, especially with children)

It's also a pretty quiet place. There are several massage parlors, a couple of cafes, 7/11. To get to everything else you need to go by bike, car or.
Ban Tai beach is very beautiful. Bauni with crooked palm trees, white sand and a gently sloping entrance to the water (but not so gentle that it’s a kilometer to walk to the water).

Maenam Beach

Maenam is a popular area for both recreation and wintering. There are many rentals here, from bungalows right on the water to luxury condos in the mountains.

There are inexpensive hotels and the beach here is excellent.

I had the most fun swimming here. Moreover, both in winter and in summer. There were no strong waves like on Chaweng or low tides like on many other beaches.

A soulful beach, only pleasant memories.

Bo Phut Beach

Also a great place for relaxation and wintering. There is a lot of housing for rent here and quite good infrastructure.

Very close to large supermarkets. The sea is suitable for swimming regardless of the season, but sometimes there is mud at the bottom.

There are many cafes, both cheap and very expensive (especially in the Fisherman Village area).

On Fridays there is a walking street on Fisherman, and several times a week you can watch a fire show right on the shore. In principle, it’s nice to take a walk any evening.

Bang Rak (Big Buddha)

The Bang Rak area is unfairly ignored by many tourists. But in vain, it is very convenient - we lived there for six months, it was great)

Close to shops, close to the sea, a lot of things within walking distance. After Leva was born, I didn’t ride a bike for almost a month and was tied to the patch where we lived. So, almost everything you need is within walking distance.

The beach is cool, but there is no feeling of bounty due to the piers, numerous boats and longtails.

But the waves and tides are not scary; you could swim almost any day.

And yet, there are excellent housing prices. And a cool swing on the beach.

Plai Laem Beach

The area on the other side of the Big Buddha statue.

The beach itself is small, there is not much housing for rent there, there are large and very beautiful hotels. But the place to live is so-so - the sea there is not very good for swimming, and in summer there are strong low tides. There is almost nothing in this area.

But there will definitely be beautiful sunsets here.

Choeng Mon Beach

Chong Mon is loved and adored by many winterers, especially those with children.

But I didn’t like this beach: it’s too shallow, even in winter. The water heats up to the temperature of a warm bath, but it’s impossible to swim there - you’ll have to sit like in a bathtub)

There are fragments of coral at the bottom; it is better not to swim barefoot.

There are both tie-style houses and expensive villas on the seashore. Close to Chaweng (but not accessible on foot).

Chaweng Beach

Chaweng is the busiest place on Koh Samui. All the major stores are located here (Central Festival, Tesco Lotus, Big C and Makro), and you can walk to them if you wish.

A huge number of bars, discos, restaurants, shops, massage parlors. Night market, there are walking streets on Saturdays. SIH and Bangkok Samui Hospital are also here.

Accordingly, there are plenty of housing offers - like budget options for backpackers and luxury hotels.

It's nice to walk along the sea right on the beach.

In winter, the beach is not very good for swimming: strong waves, currents (sometimes rip), and sometimes low tides.

But when there are no waves, the beach is gorgeous. Especially in the Chaweng Noi area.

Lamai Beach

Lamai is the second most popular beach with a fairly developed infrastructure. Located just south of Chaweng.

There are many cafes and restaurants here, including right on the seashore; fire shows are often held on the beach. There is a market, Tesco Lotus and Makro supermarkets.

Close to the main attractions of the island.

Many expats live here, including Russians) But not only that, there are also plenty of Italians, Germans, French, and Australians.

Houses for long-term residence are mainly located not on the shore, but within a 5-10 minute bike ride. If you have transport, you can climb higher into the mountains and enjoy the view every day!

There is coarse sand on the beach yellow color, in winter there are strong waves and it is not always possible to swim. It was great in the spring.

Hua Thanon and other southern beaches

Hua Thanon and the rest of the beaches in the south of the island up to Lipa Noi can be combined into one group.

These are very quiet (sometimes even wild) places, suitable for people who really want to relax about society and the basic benefits of civilization)

There are quite a few houses for long-term stays here, and there are beautiful expensive hotels. It will take a long bike ride to get to large shops and cafes.

The sea is beautiful, but not suitable for swimming. It is always shallow here, and in the summer there are low tides.

There is a Muslim village in the Hua Thanon area where you can go there for fresh fish and seafood.

My conclusion

  • If you don't want to travel around the island by bike, your best bet is Lamai. Everything is within walking distance - the sea and large shops. Close to attractions.
  • If you want some action - go to Chaweng.
  • It’s good with children in Ban Tai and Maenam. You can consider Choeng Mon.
  • Maenam, Bo Put, Big Buddha (Bang Rak), Chaweng and Lamai are good for wintering.
  • If you come at the height of the season, everything is busy or expensive - try looking in Bang Rak.
  • For complete privacy, head south or Lipa Noi.

In general, everywhere on Koh Samui is good. Ciao!

The beaches of Samui are varied and there are a huge number of them. The beach map shows the largest and most popular beaches, but there are also many small, little-known ones. There are many generally wild beaches, and there are nudist beaches. But, unfortunately, there are fewer and fewer wild ones, as the island of Koh Samui is gaining popularity; more and more people come here every year in search of peace, tranquility and “Bounty” style beaches.

Samui beaches on the map - 17 main ones

So, if you are planning to go to Samui on vacation, then in this case, the beaches of Chaweng, Lamai and Bophut are most suitable for you. These are the three most party beaches, where the main concentration of entertainment bars, restaurants, for every taste. There are also large stores nearby, such as: Tesco-Lotus, Makro, Big C.

The fourth and most famous beach of the island is Maenam, and it is ideal for families with children.

Chaweng has a very beautiful beach, there is white, fine sand and clear, blue water with small white caps of sea foam. That is why most hotels are located here. This is where tour operators take tour packages)). The whole crowd is concentrated here and there are a lot of young party-goers, if you are one of them, then this is the place for you. It is believed that this is where the nightlife is active and always full of people. But I really want to add from my own personal experience, on this occasion))

Personal experience

Although we are no longer young partygoers, we love to rock and roll)) One night, when we didn’t want to sleep, but wanted to go on an adventure. The time was around 24-00 o'clock, and so we went to Chaweng, knowing that there was nightlife there. Imagine our surprise when all we saw on Chaweng were a couple or three working “prostitutes”. And that's it!!! Everything else was closed half past midnight and everyone was sleeping peacefully!

Disappointed, we returned to Maenam, where along the main road there were bars, musicians were singing - “Live Music”, people were walking and having fun! The conclusion we came to is)) Like Bophut, Chaweng has many hotels in close proximity to bars and restaurants. That is why after 23-00 you can’t make noise, and everything calms down. And in Maenam, hotels and houses are in the depths, away from the road, so here the fun continues until the last client)). So we came to a conclusion for ourselves)). And you?

More about the beaches

Lamai, a beautiful, well-kept area. Here you can also find everything your heart desires. But the distinctive feature of Lamai is big waves, which in winter period happen very often. And even those who like to splash in the waves, to which I considered myself, do not always manage to even enter the sea.

Bophut is also full of expensive and not so expensive hotels, all kinds of entertainment and restaurants. But the sea here is calmer and the sand is coarser.

And of course, Maenam, this is what I want to talk about today, in more detail, describe and show a photo of this beach. Let the rest wait their turn)) Next time))

Koh Samui Beaches: Maenam

Shore

Maenam, best suited for family vacation and for those who are looking for privacy and tranquility. According to numerous reviews, it is considered a family beach. It's very good with children here. The entire shore is in the shade of beautiful palm trees, the sand is loose, large, pleasant. The beach line extends up to 5 kilometers, to the east the beach expands. Therefore, people are evenly distributed along the beach, and no one sits on each other’s heads)).

There are no ebbs and flows in Maenam, or rather this does not affect swimming in any way. Three, five steps into the water and it’s already deep. The bottom on Maenam is sandy, there are no stones or corals, you can swim without surprises. During the rainy season, of course, there are waves, but then they bring garbage to the shore, and in general, due to the constant seething, the sea becomes cloudy and somehow does not attract diving into it.

But most of the time, the sea is pleasantly calm, with a slight sound of the surf and a pleasant breeze. Maenam is more suitable for quiet beach holiday, there are almost no beach vendors and all kinds of water activities (bananas and jet skis).

Food, shops and restaurants

Maenam has everything you need, along the ring road there are bars and restaurants. There are also plenty of cafes on the beach. There is always somewhere to sit and have a snack. There are morning and evening markets where you can buy fresh herbs and fresh seafood. And already prepared food, if you don’t want to strain yourself and “Sabai” has overtaken you)) On Thursdays in Maenam there is a local Walking Street, a small street where you can eat “all sorts of things” on the go and buy some nonsense)). Exactly so, because the scale and content are the same.

It's time to make the right choice for your health. Before it's too late - act! Now 1000-year-old recipes are available to you. 100% natural Trado complexes – this is the best gift for your body. Start restoring your health today!

There are many small, 24-hour convenience stores, such as 7eleven and Family Mart, at every turn. But if you need large stores, they are already in the Bophut area and closer to Chaweng. Although, when you have a bike, this is somehow not a problem, especially after Moscow distances.

There is everything for life. Everything is thought out for our convenience. Along the ring road there are cafes and restaurants open until the morning. Live music is played here and there.

If you are active comrades, you can organize a movement yourself, like my husband for example)) I have already managed to sing with my instrument, together with foreign musicians and make acquaintances.

And this week, he plans to perform in a Russian bar. Found on a social network where Russians living on Koh Samui communicate. It turned out there are a lot of fans of live rock music))

Where to live

For rental housing or hotels, here is the most huge variety. From cheap small rooms for 2.5 thousand Baht to huge expensive villas in the mountains. Here in Maenam, probably the most a large number of houses and hotels for living, and most big variety prices

Watch the video of our house search, we just settled on Maenam. “” That’s why I started my story about the beaches of Samui from Maenam beach.

With this I will finish about the beautiful Maenam. In the following articles I will definitely tell you in detail and show you other beaches on the island.

See you soon!

All guidebooks say that Samui is an island of serenity and a place for an ideal beach holiday in the Bounty style. And indeed it is!

In describing the beaches of Koh Samui, we tried to give only facts, without stooping to tourist tales about how it once was here, and why something is this way and not that way. ...In general, there are no lyrical digressions or fairy tales here.
If someone lacks them, then this is not for us, this is for the guides working on the “islands of Thailand” (according to some, especially “advanced” guides, for example, Krabi is an island, not a province of Thailand, Phuket is this is not an island, but a part of the mainland, almost like Pattaya, and the name of the Kingdom - Thailand - is spelled with a "th", that is - Thailand).

Descriptions of most beaches on Koh Samui are accompanied by a video filmed right on the beach.
Each video clearly shows: what sand, what beach and entrance to the sea in each area of Koh Samui. The videos were filmed mostly in cloudy weather, but even in such weather you can clearly see how good the best Koh Samui beaches(reviews from island guests confirm that they are good even in the rain!), and on a sunny day, the beaches of Koh Samui are simply beautiful!

Well, and myself Koh Samui island on the map it's very easy to find: Southeast Asia, Kingdom of Thailand, whose outlines resemble the head of an elephant, where the South is its trunk, and in the South we look at the eastern coast of the Gulf of Thailand.

Support us on social networks!

I highly recommend that you read an overview of all the beaches on the island before traveling to Koh Samui. Because they are very different, and it is very difficult to give clear recommendations. Some people want a beautiful beach with white sand, but don’t care about the crowds of people. For some, the main thing is to swim in the sea, and it doesn’t matter what kind of sand there is. And some people are annoyed by crowds and love secluded beaches.

In general, there are many beaches, good and different, and you can choose your favorite.

What the beach will look like depends greatly on the season, weather and the phase of low or high tide. The same shore one day will look like something out of a Bounty advertisement, and the next it will be gray and dirty, with high waves. During the rainy season, the water in the sea is cloudy, and branches and household rubbish wash up on the shore.

Briefly speaking about the beaches of Samui, the most popular of them stretch along the eastern and northern parts of the island. In the south and west, the beaches are rocky and shallow, they are less popular with tourists, and it is quite quiet here.

I will start my review from the most popular and famous beach and will move clockwise. And after reviewing all the articles, I will make a selection of the best beaches in my opinion, the best beaches recommended for children, as well as a selection of wild beaches.

All beaches of Koh Samui

On the map below I have marked the main beaches of Koh Samui.

Chaweng Beach

The most party and famous beach of Samui. The entire coast is densely built up with hotels, cafes, restaurants, shops and retail stalls. To get to the beach, you need to go through all these buildings. Sometimes you even have to circle around to first find a free parking spot, and then find the entrance to the beach.

Chaweng is located next to Samui Airport, so you can often see low-flying planes here. It is breathtaking and beautiful, especially at sunset. But I wouldn’t want to live near the airport, because planes fly quite often.

Chaweng is quite extensive and heterogeneous in different places, so there are three different parts of the beach.

Chaweng Yai Beach

The north of the beach is called Chaweng Yai Beach. It is not very convenient to swim here, as it is shallow and there are rocks at the bottom. This part of the beach is protected from the waves by a stone embankment in the distance.

Chaweng Beach

The part in the center is the most beautiful, well-groomed and crowded with people. The water is calm, blue, transparent, just a classic paradise beach. The sand is fine, very light, almost white.

It is very convenient for swimming, the bottom is clean and pleasant, the depth gradually increases.

The beach is very crowded, there are a lot of tourists and Thais and Thais are constantly walking around, offering boiled corn, Sunglasses and all sorts of rubbish. This is, of course, a must for partygoers who are here at every turn. Music is heard from bars and clubs, people are having fun, drinking, making noise.

Chaweng has a lot of water activities such as jet skis, banana boats and boats. You can rent a sun lounger for 3 USD (100 baht).

The beach, of course, is incredibly beautiful, but I’ve only been there a couple of times because I don’t like swimming in a soup of people.

Chaweng Noi Beach

The south of Chaweng looks about the same as the central part, only here everything is built up with luxury hotels and is generally more peaceful.

How to get to Chaweng Beach

The map shows that Chaweng is located a little away from the main ring road of Samui. But the great gravity of Chaweng acts on tuk-tuk drivers and they turn off the roundabout, driving onto the beach and then back onto the main road. Therefore, you can easily get to Chaweng by tuk-tuk.

For those who travel independently by bike or car, I will provide Google coordinates and a screenshot of the map with the beach point.

Google coordinates: 9.520727, 100.057013.

Coral Cove Beach

The beach is located in a small bay, and it itself is small: only 200 meters in length. There are only a few hotels and cafes here, it is quite cozy and calm. There are sunbeds, but only hotel residents can use them.

There are huge stone boulders scattered on the beach, among which there are mini-beaches where you can hide from prying eyes if you are lucky. You can jump on the stones and take pictures. The place is more suitable for coming here for a few hours, admiring the beautiful place and taking a photo.

The water is clean, transparent, the depth is average, not to say shallow. There may be stones at the bottom, you need to watch your step. You can sometimes see schools of fish in the water.

How to get to Coral Cove Beach

You need to first get to the Coral Cove Resort hotel, and from there go down to the beach. You can get there by tuk-tuk.

Google coordinates: 9.49056, 100.06128.

Crystal Bay Beach or Silver Beach

A beach with azure water and light sand. The beach is more suitable for walks and photo sessions. There are stones and algae in the water. But you can swim too.

Near the shore it is shallow at first, but you have to get to the depth. But it’s good to relax here with kids.

There is no nightlife on Crystal Bay; only daytime bars and cafes are open. And there’s no need, since Chaweng and Lamai are nearby for such things.

How to get to Crystal Bay Beach

You need to get to Crystal Bay through the hotels. You need to get, for example, to the Crystal Bay Beach Resort hotel and go through it to the beach.

Google coordinates: 9.478, 100.06644.

Lamai Beach or Lamai

In terms of popularity and love among tourists, Lamai is in second place after Chaweng. It is more family-friendly and less party-oriented. But there are also a lot of people there.

The beach itself is already different from neighboring Chaweng. The sand here is coarser and harder. And here it is noticeably deeper; you can reach a depth “up to your neck” in a few steps. Therefore, this place is one of the best for swimming and swimming.

Of course, due to the sand and depth, the view here is not the same. The water is darker and bluer, not picture-turquoise. Sometimes there are algae and some debris in the water, but this is not critical. It gets dirtier after a storm, when the waves wash debris ashore.

The shore itself is very clean, as all establishments carefully monitor order. Also, the shore is quite wide, the line of palm trees is quite far from the water's edge. There are sun loungers and umbrellas that can be rented for the same 3 USD (100 baht). You can rent a jet ski, flyboard, banana, wake board.

The coastline of Lamai Beach is long, so for convenience there are three parts:

  • The north is not suitable for sailing, so there are fewer people and fewer restaurants. Here, mostly fishermen catch fish and, accordingly, everything is filled with their boats.
  • When people talk about Lamai, they most often mean the central part, which I described above.

  • Closer to the south there are already algae, corals and stones, respectively, and there are fewer people.

The Lamai area is considered suitable for long-term living. Many Russian-speaking expats live and work here.

How to get to Lamai Beach

You can take a tuk-tuk (songthaew) or go by private transport.

Google coordinates: 9.46554, 100.04653.

Hua Thanon Beach

Actually, this place is ignored by tourists and occupied by fishermen and their boats.

How to get to Hua Thanon Beach

You can get there by any convenient transport, including public transport.

Google coordinates: 9.44487, 100.02588

Laem Set Beach

Quiet, shallow and inconvenient beach for swimming. During high tide it is better to walk here. It is especially good to go here with children, because they can splash in the water without waves or depth. But you need to choose places without stones and debris. The sand is small in some places, larger and yellow in others.

When the tide begins to ebb, an unsightly bottom with stones and numerous algae is exposed.

Removed on Laem Set only near local hotels, step left, step right and you can already observe what humanity constantly throws into the sea, and the sea throws it back to man.

How to get to Laem Set Beach

Starting from Laem Seth, there are beaches that cannot be reached by tuk-tuk. Therefore, you need to get to all of them either by taxi or on your own by motorbike or car.

Google coordinates: 9.42086, 100.00893.

Bang Kao beach

Here little choice housing, but it is possible to rent a house at an affordable price.

There are no conditions for swimming on Bang Kao, since it is very shallow, there is silt, corals and stones at the bottom. Accordingly, there are no beach joys of life in the form of bars, sun loungers and umbrellas. But there are no crowds of tourists and drunken shouts of young people. Which is a definite plus for some.

This is just a wild, deserted beach with the opportunity to retire and think about your own, about the eternal. In case the garbage doesn’t interfere, which is almost never removed here.

Most often locals come to the beach, but tourists almost never get to it.

How to get to Bang Kao beach

You can get there along road 4170 by taxi or by your own transport.

Google coordinates: 9.42317, 99.99386.

Phang Ka Beach

It’s also very small, trashy and sparsely populated. Hotels are rare, the area around them is well-groomed. In other places, you guessed it, there is garbage.

It is quite shallow here; to get to the depths you will have to walk for a long time.

The beach is suitable only for walks and for sunbathing in silence. The sandy shore is quite wide, the nearest shade from the palm tree crowns is far away. There are sun loungers and umbrellas near the hotels.

To the south of Koh Samui there are several coral islands where tourists love to go. Therefore, there are companies here that offer tours to these islands, as well as some other services - diving, snorkeling, etc.

How to get to Phang Ka Beach

Take highway 4170 to the southwest of the island with your own transport or by taxi.

Google coordinates: 9.42103, 99.95369.

Taling Ngam Beach

We move to the west of the island. All western beaches are not very suitable for swimming in the sea, but they have a big and fat plus. There are few people here and you can see (or rather see off) stunning sunsets.

The quiet, deserted Taling Nam beach cannot boast of a normal sea. It is shallow, there are stones everywhere at the bottom and I don’t recommend anyone to swim.

There are few hotels on Taling Nam. In general, here are the most luxurious villas on Koh Samui, hidden from prying eyes.

Although you won't be able to shop here, it is a stunning place for a romantic evening. Sitting on a deserted beach and admiring the sunset, enjoying the quiet splash of the waves, is also worth a lot. Not everyone is given an ideal place for swimming.

How to get to Taling Ngam Beach

Taling Nam Beach is located at a distance from the main ring road, so it cannot be reached by tuk-tuk. You will have to either take a taxi or rent your own transport.

Google coordinates: 9.46105, 99.93302.

Lipa Noi Beach or Tong Yang Beach

Beach with gray sand. Hotels are rare, but the area around them is more or less well-groomed. In some places the sea washes up quite large piles of branches and household human garbage.

The sea is also shallow. You have to walk almost 100 meters until you have the opportunity to swim without risking scratching your belly on the rocks. In the center of the beach the situation is better, it is deeper and there are fewer stones. The water near the shore is cloudy.

The beach is suitable for children who can cry near the shore. It is also good to walk here and enjoy the sunsets.

And, again, like many beaches in the West, this one is suitable for watching the sunset. There are few entertainment establishments; young people usually do not come here.

How to get to Lipa Noi Beach

Lipa Noi Beach is closer to the ring road, but still not close. You can’t get there by tuk-tuk unless you walk from the road to the beach, which is a bit far. You can get there by taxi or private transport.

Google coordinates: 9.50069, 99.93439.

Nathon Beach

Nathon is the capital and also a port city. It is Nathon who is most often seen by those travelers who arrive by ferry.

Nathon is an industrial city. Ferries, speedboats and boats operate here. The low tides here are especially noticeable; the sea itself is quite shallow and, moreover, dirty here.

How to get to Nathon Beach

If you arrived by ferry, then you are most likely already in Nathon. From other points of the island, all tuk-tuks flock here, since Nathon is their final destination.

Google coordinates: 9.52822, 99.93458.

Bang Po Beach Samui

The first beach on the north side of the island, so our review begins again with swimming spots.

Bang Po is recommended for families with children. The sea near the shore is shallow, which is exactly what children need. To reach a depth suitable for an adult, you need to walk 15–20 metro stations. This beach is affected by low tides, as it exposes an unsightly bottom with corals. Therefore, in Bang Po you need to take into account the tide and come only at this time.

There are no sun loungers for rent here. Here you can find inexpensive housing, both daily and for long-term rentals of several months, so this place is often chosen by families with children who come for a long time.

It’s good to just walk along this beach, there are not many people here and these are mostly families with children.

How to get to Bang Por Beach

Starting from Nathon, the ability to get to the beaches by tuk-tuk returns again.

Baan Tai Beach

This is a small and quiet beach where there are usually few people. In general, it is similar to the previous one, since it is shallow here, and again, parents with children choose this place.

The sand here is light and soft. There is litter, especially along the edges of the beach.

How to get to the beach (Baan Tai Beach)

You can get there by any means of transport (tuk-tuk, motorbike, taxi, car) to the Mimosa resort hotel. From the ring road there will be a turn towards the sea and above it there will be a blue sign with the text This is the way to the public beach. This turn is clearly visible in the screenshot below; there is still a 7-Eleven store on the corner.

Maenam beach

My favorite and the king of the beaches of all Samui is Maenam.

The sand here is coarse, yellow, and I find it very pleasant. The waves can sometimes be quite strong if the weather is bad and windy. But if the day is warm, sunny and calm, then there is not water here, but a fairy tale.

This beach is quite large: in one part it is more lively, and in others it is very quiet and calm.

I lived at the very beginning of the beach (in its western part) and first I’ll tell you about this area. I very rarely see tourists swimming here. Sometimes Thais come and always swim in their clothes. Sometimes local kids frolic. But most often we swam here completely alone, which I absolutely loved.

The width of the coast in this part is only a few meters, the sand is coarse and yellow. Unfortunately, there is trash. A couple of times I saw Thai schoolchildren collecting garbage. Apparently, they are driven to clean-up days just like us, only to the seashore.

In this part, the shore is not very suitable for lying in the sun. But I never sunbathe, and I only come to the beach to swim, so I don’t like this beach.

You only need to take 5-6 steps in the water, and you already have a good depth for swimming. At the bottom I never bumped into stones at all. In calm weather there are no waves, in windy weather there are waves and swimming is uncomfortable.

In another part of the beach there are more tourists and there are water activities. There are already bars and restaurants, and masseuses are ready to give you a massage. The nightlife is not so developed here, as the area is more family-oriented. But there are very nice atmospheric bars on the shore, just like a picture from a movie.

The water is rarely completely clear, only in very good weather. Basically it's a little unclear. However, that doesn't stop her from being wonderful. blue color.

How to get to Maenam beach

The ring road stretches along the entire Maenam beach, so you can easily get there by tuk-tuk. I repeat that the beach is long and there are many options for where to come.

Bophut Beach

Oh, the confusion with Thai names. Bophut beach is often called Bophut, which is not entirely correct, but everyone is already used to it. By the way, the situation is similar with the island of Phuket, which everyone calls. Okay, let's go back to the beach.

Popular great beach. Medium size yellow sand. Just like in Maenam, it is quite deep here, there are few waves, so it is good to swim here. There are sun loungers and umbrellas that can be rented for 3 USD (100 baht).

There are all sorts of water activities. There are a lot of people, but mostly in the area of large hotels, of which there are many here.

Bophut has a developed infrastructure, but mainly consists of daytime restaurants, hotels and spas. For clubs and nightlife, continue to Chaweng.

In general, we can say that Bophut, both in location and in its essence and atmosphere, is a cross between the calm and family-friendly Maenam and active Chaweng. It’s more fun here than in Maenam, but there aren’t these endless parties until the morning like in Chaweng.

How to get to Bophut Beach

Getting there is easy, because there is a tuk-tuk service, you just need to ask the driver to stop at Bophut.

Big Buddha Beach or Bang Rak

This place is not suitable for swimming or relaxation in general, in my opinion. It’s a bit shallow here, the water near the shore is muddy and it’s easy to bump into rocks. There are quite a few boats on the beach, which also does not add to the desire to swim.

There are four piers here; boats with tourists are constantly scurrying here and there. From here there are boats to neighboring islands, including Koh Tao.

The sand is yellow and fine, in good weather the water is azure and in general it is quite beautiful and you can sunbathe or walk.

There are no water activities and not a lot of people, but there are sun loungers for those who appreciate lying on the beach in silence and solitude.

How to get to Bang Rak Beach

Bang Rak Beach is located almost opposite the airport. Tuk-tuk plying on the ring road does not come here. Alternatively, you can drive to Bophut beach and walk from there. Either take a taxi or private transport to the place marked on the map.

Choeng Mon Beach

The coastline is quite wide; there are sun loungers and umbrellas everywhere on the beach (which, like everywhere else, can be rented for 3 USD). In the evening, tables are set up in cafes right on the shore.

The water here is a beautiful azure color, but hides stones underneath. Closer to the center there are smaller stones and it is more convenient to swim there.

This area of the island is very lively, so all the people flock here. There are quite a lot of all kinds of services here: from cafes and various massage parlors to extreme water and not so much things. For example, here you can ride a banana boat, rent a kayak or yacht, or go water skiing.

How to get to Choeng Mon Beach

The beach is located right at the tip of the island's "branch". Tuk-Tuk comes here, but doesn't come very regularly. It’s easier to get there by renting a bike or car.

The best beaches of Koh Samui

As you can see from the review, the beaches on Koh Samui are very different. Talking about which beach is better and which is worse is only subjective. Judging by popularity among tourists, the best beaches are:

Chaweng; Lamai; Maena.

These are the three most suitable beaches for swimming in the sea, all of which are easy to reach.

The best beaches in Koh Samui for children

If you are traveling with children, then the requirements for the beach are completely different. The beach should be clean, there should be no strong waves, the entrance should be gentle, and the depth should not be too close:

Chaweng; Maenam; Chong Mon; Linden Noah; Ban Tai; Crystal Bay.

Wild beaches of Koh Samui

It is worth understanding that there are no completely wild beaches on Koh Samui. For example, I don’t remember any beach being completely deserted. No, no, once an hour a couple of tourists or local aborigines will flash somewhere.

So we will call quiet beaches where there are simply few people wild.

These include all western and southern beaches:

Hua Thanon; Laem Seth; Bang Kao; Pang Ka; Taling Nam; Linden Noah.

All these beaches have shallow seas, with rocks on the shore and in the water. Some of them are dirty, but most are clean and very beautiful. Suitable for long, quiet walks without having to avoid numerous swimmers and sunbathers.

Nudist beaches on Koh Samui

I have never practiced nudism, and therefore have never been to such beaches. In general, the island is most famous among nudists in Thailand. As far as I know, there are no official nudist beaches on Koh Samui. On the Internet forums they mention Ban Tai Beach, along which you need to go left until you come across a nudist beach. However, with a greater desire, with a slight movement of the hand, any wild beach turns... turns into a nudist one! It is worth remembering that Thais have a negative attitude towards such European weaknesses. And it seems there is even a fine for public nudity. Another thing is that who will write it out for you there on a remote deserted beach?

***

So, my review is finished, I hope that it helped you and you will choose the best beach for yourself. And if you have time, then I advise you to take bikes and ride along all the beaches and see all the shores of Samui on your own.

Have a nice trip!

Anything to add?

So, in order. I will tell you about those beaches that, from my point of view, are worth visiting. I liked the beaches listed below and I personally visited them all. Some are good for hanging out, some are good for meditation and relaxation, most can be enjoyed while swimming.

Chaweng Beach(Chaveng Beach)- the most central and popular on Samui, a kind of analogue of Phuket Patong Beach. Located on the east coast of the island, you can watch the sunrise. As for me, Chaweng is suitable for swimming starting from its central part and further to the south. Good gentle entry into the sea, clean bottom without stones, more suitable married couples with kids. In favor of this is soft and shallow White sand which is pleasant to wander around. Along the edge of the beach farthest from the water, everything is lined with sun loungers and cafes; you can use sun loungers only if you live in the appropriate hotel. I'm not a fan of lying on the beach - so it didn't bother me at all.

Excellent infrastructure, a bunch of expensive and not so expensive hotels, as a result many package tourists vacation here. Chaweng is crowded even in the low season. As a result, there are many traders of all kinds of food. It is stormy here mainly from November to January, but the rest of the year is calm.

There are a lot of all kinds of marine entertainment here - jet skis, banana boats and catamarans.

Silence on Chaweng comes in the morning - from 9.00 to 11.00 in the morning you can calmly enjoy high-quality sand, sea and silence. I recommend visiting it at this time.

Chaweng Noi Beach(Chaveng Noi Beach)– in fact, this is the southern part of Chaweng Beach. It is completely different from central Chaweng and personally, I vote for this beach with both hands. This is where I lived. Pros: there is no such traffic as in central Chaweng, the entry into the water is not as shallow and gentle, there are fewer people, there are practically no traders. Close to Lamai beach and to the market where we bought seafood for grilling. Our hotel was located above the road and this did not bother us at all - we were not tied to a specific beach and saw 75% of everything that can be seen on Samui.

Lamai Beach (Lamai Beach)– another popular beach, which is more preferred by independent travelers. Mostly in the vicinity of the beach there are inexpensive bungalows and hotels. The sand is coarser and for some reason you fall into it, on Chaweng it is smaller and denser, but somehow the beach caught your attention. Probably because it is less commercialized than Chaweng. There is no particular beauty, there are palm trees over the sea. Spacious and serene, much less crowded than on Chaweng. In my rating I put it in 2nd place. From here it is most convenient to get to many of the attractions of Samui - waterfalls, temples and simply beautiful places.

Coral Cove

Very picturesque bay, between the beaches Chaweng NoiAndLamai Beach. Only 130 meters of sand. main feature The beach consists of huge beautiful boulders of coral origin. The landscape is somewhat reminiscent Seychelles, there are plenty of secluded places between the boulders. Ideal for lovers of silence, only sea, sand and boulders, nothing else here. The nearest bar-restaurant is upstairs, along the Samui Ring Road, where the Coral Cove Hotel is located, from which the bungalow overlooks great view to the Gulf of Thailand. You can only get to the beach through the hotel territory; many people think that the beach also belongs to the hotel - this is not true. There are no private beaches on Koh Samui, you can walk and sunbathe and swim freely. Nevertheless, strangers practically do not go to this beach - which makes it easy ideal place for a secluded atmospheric relaxation.

A big plus of the beach is that the place is secluded, but it’s very close to active parties and nightlife; you can get to the nearest party in Lamai or Chaweng by songthaew (local view) public transport) in 10 minutes for a small amount.

Thongtakian

This is the most beautiful bay on Koh Samui, in my opinion. She is especially beautiful from above. It’s easy to find, after Coral Cove if you go south, the ring road turns sharply in the area of the Thongtakian Hotel, nearby are also Cristal Bay Resort, La Mer Samui Resort and Samui Yacht club. There are signs everywhere, so it's hard to miss. The path to the beach goes towards the sea, we follow the hotel signs and get to the beach.

The bay is also called Silver beach or Crystal Bay. There are picturesque rocks on both sides, and a coral reef under the water. If you're lucky, you might see turtles or small stingrays. Mask and fins are required. The beach itself is unusually green, besides palm trees there are a lot of others deciduous trees that create a cozy and private atmosphere.

Here there is white, very fine, powdery sand and a clear sea. On the left side of the bay there is Gliboka literally right away, there are boulders nearby, on the right there is shallow water - ideal for children, for families with children there is freedom here.

There is a cafe on the shore, and further away there are several good quality restaurants, including the famous The Cliff, naturally with a steep view of the sea.

Laem Set

The place is very quiet and not very popular among mass tourists. Located south of the beaches Hua Thanon, on Cape Laem Set. The entrance to the water is very gentle, resulting in an unpresentable appearance at high tides. A definite plus is the long coral reef further from the shore. In addition to snorkeling, the beach is ideal for active sports - kiting or windsurfing.

The place is located near the mega-popular Lamai beach. The eastern part of the beach is a great place to watch the sunrise.

From here it is convenient to get to the Na Muang 1 and Na Muang 2 waterfalls, near the Aquarium, the Butterfly Garden and the Tiger Zoo.

Other attractions include Buddha’s Footprint (see map)

Bang Kao, Natien Beach

This is the very south of Koh Samui. From the west, the beaches are closed by Cape Laem So, on which the southernmost point of the island is located, and from the east by Laem Set Beach.
Cape So – the best place for watching the sunset, although the beauty is hampered by the coast of Surat Thani, which is in full view from here. In addition to sunsets, the sunrise is clearly visible from here, which is often no less beautiful than the sunset.

Bang Kao has a gentle entrance to the water, soft and pleasant sand. Ideal for morning walks and relaxing alone. Nearby there is a small coral reef where you can dive.

Not far from the beach in the depths of the island - temple Wat Khunaraam. It is famous for a mummified monk who died more than thirty years ago during regular meditation in the lotus position.

Another attraction is the Laem Sor Pagoda, which looks very beautiful in the evening light against the background of the turquoise sea, it is located on Cape So (Laem Sor). On the same cape is the White Pagoda (Khao Chedi)

Samrong Bay

This is the most expensive bay of the island, the northernmost bay, and from here it is closest to another paradise island, Koh Phangan. Two hundred meters of coarse yellow sand and picturesque rocks, a gradual increase in depth - a brief description of beach Few tourists know about this bay, which is why it is also called Secret Bay.

There is an airport and airplanes nearby - the only thing that bothers people vacationing here, however, you quickly get used to them.

The most expensive hotel on the island, Arayaburi Boutique Resort, is located here. The entrance to the beach is through the hotel, you can leave your car upstairs and not worry about anything. The beach is miniature, less than 200 meters long and very picturesque. This is the quietest beach on the island, there are plenty of tables around where you can sit and watch the sea. It is better to swim in slippers; you will come across sharp fragments of corals and shells.

In addition, there are a couple more beautiful beaches at Cape Samrong.

Choeng Mon

Located in the northeast of the island. The beach is surrounded by greenery and is about a kilometer long. Fine coral sand alternates in places with coarser sand. The beach is divided into two bays, the entrance to the water is convenient with a gradual increase in depth. The water is clear, and the bottom is clear of small corals and cameos. The advantage of the beach is calm and clear water.

The coastline is lined with mostly high-level hotels. The beach is equipped with sun loungers, showers and toilets. Full of cafes, restaurants and, of course, massage corners. Like many Samui beaches, it is suitable for families and those who like to dine right on the beach in a restaurant.

There is no active nightlife or related entertainment. There is a golf club nearby. The landmark of the beach is a huge figure of a football player with balls, made of coconuts.

Maenam Beach

This beach is located in the north of the island. It also offers views of Koh Phangan Island. Coarse yellow sand, a gentle entrance and a length of about 5 kilometers. The water is somewhat muddy, as two rivers flow into the bay in this area. At low tides the bottom is not exposed, there is enough depth. Not far from the beach there is a morning market, generally concentrated local residents here is the highest. This area is good for a long stay on the island. This is where it is ideal to observe the life of local residents and this, in my opinion, is the most authentic place on Samui. Suitable for those who want to immerse themselves in the environment and live a little among the Thais.

Bophut

Bophut Beach is located in the north of the island, east of the beach Maenam Beach, and borders the neighboring beaches of Maenam and Big Buddha.

The length of the sand spit is about three kilometers. The sand here is about the same as on Maenam.

Bophut Beach is famous primarily for its unique cafes, signature restaurants and conceptual boutique hotels.

Along the main street of the beach there are many small Thai shops, with most of them being self made. The place is quite crowded, but pleasant. The most delicious one is here thai soup Tom Yam.

On this beach there is the famous Fisherman’s Village or “fishing village”; most of the chefs of famous Samian restaurants buy local fish from this market.

Most of the hotels are expensive, but you can find a fairly decent one in the mid-range.
