One of the most popular electricity metering devices from Incotex is the Mercury meter and its modifications. Read the article about what operating characteristics the meter has and how to connect the meter.

Electric meter Mercury-201: principle of operation, characteristics

Counter Mercury 201 is electronic device metering of electrical energy consumption in alternating current networks, which is designed for an operating voltage of 220-230 V. The device can be used either separately or in conjunction with automated electricity metering systems.

The Mercury 201 meter registers and stores data on the amount of electricity consumed from the moment it is put into use according to one specified tariff.

The electromechanical device has a convenient liquid crystal display, a narrowband PLC modem module for transmitting information via power network. The signal transmission speed in the meter is about 7.5 kbit/s. Summarizing all the indicators, the device displays them in kilowatt-hours.

The main advantages of Mercury-201 include:

  • High level of accuracy. The device has the first accuracy class out of two acceptable.
  • Small dimensions. The device has the following dimensions: 10.5x10.5x6.4 cm, and its weight does not exceed 250 grams.
  • Reliability. The device is resistant to short-term current overloads exceeding the maximum value by 30 times. At the same time, deviations in the device readings are 1-1.5%.
  • Low power consumption. The total power consumed by the meter is 1.5 W.
  • Durability. The average service life of the meter is 30 years.

The device comes complete with a protective box, passport, operating instructions, and warranty. A manual for medium repairs is available upon request. The warranty period for each device is 36 months from the date of commissioning of the device.

Mercury-201: connection diagram

The electronic device Mercury 201 keeps track of electricity “modulo”. This means that a connection with reverse current polarity does not affect the meter readings. Yes, when connecting single-phase meter you can swap the input and output phases, connect the phase to the neutral terminal, and the neutral to the phase terminal. However, the manufacturer recommends connecting the electric meter according to the diagram. The meter connection diagram is quite simple.

So, single phase Mercury has four terminals for wires:

  • The first terminal is responsible for introducing the phase into the home;
  • The second is for phase output to electrical installations;
  • The neutral working wire from the external network is connected through the third terminal;
  • Zero output to electrical installations is realized through the fourth terminal.

To connect the contacts to the terminals, you need to remove the protective cover from the terminal block and unscrew the fastening screws in the wire cells. After that, the stripped, flat section of the wire corresponding to the terminal must be inserted evenly into the contact clamp. The screws that secure the wire can be tightened using a Phillips screwdriver. Fixation should begin with the top screw. Connect the other wires in the same way, and then replace the protective cover.

It is necessary to supply a phase to the machines from the meter, and a phase and zero to the RCD. In this case, bypassing the machines, it is necessary to lay neutral working and protective contacts to the electrical installations connected to them. Grounding must also be carried out to the electrical installation operating through an RCD. Contacts from machines can be output to lighting and sockets, as well as household appliances. Powerful household appliances (for example, a washing machine, boiler) are usually connected to the RCD. Using the same principle, connect the electric single-phase meter “Aist” from RUE “Gomelenergo”.

How to twist the Mercury-201 electricity meter

In order to save money, some residents prefer to twist the meter readings. It should be noted that such actions are illegal. If a violation is detected, residents will be issued a fine and their electricity consumption will be recalculated according to standard tariffs. If you fail to pay the fine and debt, related services may prohibit you from leaving the country and seize your bank account, collect the debt from your wages or confiscate property to pay off a debt. However, there are many schemes online that can reduce the meter reading. But such manipulations can not only damage the meter, but also cause a fire.

Today, the most effective method for twisting electric meter readings is to purchase a circuit with a special control panel.

Such a remote control controls a circuit that is installed in the meter housing. When you press a button on the remote control, the counter begins to rewind the readings. At the same time, the longer the button is pressed, the more kW can be rewinded. On average, such a device can rewind from 10 to 12 kW per second. At the same time, the weight of the modified meter differs from the standard one by only 2.2 grams.

Technical characteristics: Mercury-201.5

Mercury 201.5 is a modification of the single-phase meter 201, which has similar technical characteristics. It also works in single-phase networks, has four terminals and first class accuracy. At the same time, the weight of the modification is 100 grams more than the usual Mercury, and its width is several mm.

The main difference between the meters lies in the fact that the modification has an electromechanical meter reading device.

Thus, information about the amount of electricity consumed is displayed using digital disks. In the fifth modification of Mercury there are six such disks. Indications are often compared against the last three.

How to deceive the Mercury-201.5 electricity meter: diagram

It can be quite difficult to rewind meter readings with your own hands using special radio circuits. If such circuits are connected incorrectly, the meter may need to be repaired. In addition, it can cost not only a fine, but also health. Therefore, cunning people have come up with several ways to “deceive” the Mercury series 201.5 counter.

So, you can stop or slow down an electromechanical meter using:

  • Neodymium magnets. One such magnet is installed on the counter, next to the disk, slowing down its speed. However, if the meter has a special magnetic tape, then this method will not work.
  • Needles. To do this, you need to make a hole in the meter body through which, towards the disk, insert a needle or pin - an object that will delay the movement of the disk. This method is only suitable for a disk counter. On Mercury 200, installing a needle will be useless.
  • Transformer. Today, many companies produce special transformers that slow down or stop the meter (depending on their power). But, such devices can negatively affect all electronics in the house.
  • Special device. Some devices connect to the meter, creating malfunctions in its operation, blocking the rotation of the disk. Such devices do not affect the electrical wiring itself.

In addition, today, most electricians provide services for stopping, slowing down or twisting meters.

How to connect the Mercury-201 meter (video)

Electric meters Mercury of the first series are the most common today. Meters have many advantages, including their availability and ease of connection. You can connect the metering device correctly by following the above tips and step-by-step instructions. In addition, you can try to “deceive” the meter by twisting the readings or stopping it. But remember that such activities are illegal and, if discovered, can lead to severe administrative penalties.

Single-phase electricity meters Mercury 201 are the most common means of energy accounting today. They replaced the old, morally and technologically outdated counters with a rotating disk.

If you decide to buy a Mercury meter and connect it yourself, this information may be useful to you.

Mercury meters have been produced by the Russian company Incotex since 2001. The manufacturer guarantees the quality and reliable operation of the device for up to 30 years.

Basic requirements for Mercury 201 meters

When purchasing a Mercury meter (series 201), you must check compliance with the basic requirements specified in the documentation:

  • accuracy class – (can be 1 or 2). This parameter indicates the permissible measurement error (1 or 2%);
  • date of manufacture of the meter (this is also the date of verification of the device);
  • number of registration of the energy metering device (Mercury 201) in the State Register of Measuring Instruments.

Check for the presence of a warranty seal (with the date of manufacture of the meter), a stamp of the state verifier (with the date of verification), and a hologram (protection against counterfeiting).

Design features of meters

Depending on the modification, Mercury 201 meters can be:

  • electromechanical. The counting device is a mechanical drum. (Mercury 201.5, 201.6, 201.7).
  • Electronic. The reading device operates on the basis electronic circuits. (Mercury 201.2, 201.4, 201.8). The results of electricity metering are displayed on a liquid crystal display.

Before installing and connecting the electric meter, you need to carefully read the operating instructions, the device data sheet, and study the direct connection diagram.

The single-phase meter on the terminal block contains 4 input contacts:

  1. Contact for entering a phase from an external network (220V) into an apartment or house. The input wire comes from the power supply company.
  2. Contact for phase exit inside an apartment or house. For the output, you can use a ShVVP type wire.
  3. Terminal for connecting zero from an external network to an apartment or house.
  4. The zero output terminal is further towards the load, that is, inside the apartment or house.

Connecting the wires should be done in the same sequence.

Important to remember! Before connecting the meter, it is necessary to de-energize the system by turning off the machine, plugs, switch (if they are installed between the main trunk line and the meter). If the input cable goes directly to the meter, disconnect the supply line.

The connected wires are neatly laid out; for this purpose, the terminal cover has perforated cells for breaking out. The cover is screwed for a tight fit to the meter body.

You should check the connection diagram again and install the cover. Then, a representative of the network organization that provides electricity supply and metering, The Mercury 201 meter is being sealed. There is a special hole in the meter for this purpose.

When the meter is connected to the mains, the red indicator light lights up.

To connect the Mercury 201 meter to the electrical network, you need to thoroughly study the documentation, be able to read electrical diagrams, and remember to strictly observe the phases and markings (colors) of the wires.

Due to this size and weight, the mechanism can be attached to a surface without modification of additional fasteners. The meter is attached to the wall (or to any other surface that the consumer chooses) using.

The bottom panel in the mechanism is removable. Its purpose is to protect the contacts of the device. That is, if you remove it, access to the input electrical contacts of the device will be open. The connection itself to such contacts is carried out using a screw connection, as shown in the photo below:

Some basic technical characteristics make the meter more convenient to use. For example, the accuracy class has a technological margin, and thanks to the use of a shunt in the circuit, the direct current component can be accurately measured.

The figure below shows the overall dimensions (drawing) of the Mercury 201 device.

Basic and additional characteristics

Before you begin to study the technical characteristics of the device, it should be noted that the electric meter has special protection against the theft of electrical energy through polarity reversal. That is, if you change the phase to zero, the electric meter will still show accurate data and will not stop working.

The technical characteristics of the Mercury 201 meter differ depending on its modification. Descriptions of models from 201.1 to 201.6, their and other parameters are shown in the table below:

In addition to the basic values, the electric meter also has additional technical characteristics (such as temperature range, operating conditions, warranty period and service life). They are listed in the table below:

The main difference between the devices is that in some models the display of consumed electricity is shown on liquid crystal displays (indicators), and in some models there is a mechanical metering unit.

Many people probably remember the old black electricity meters with a spinning disk that calculates the electricity consumption with a counting mechanism rumbling at night. But time passes, everything changes, and the means of energy accounting change accordingly. Nowadays you almost never see old, morally and technologically outdated meters. They were replaced by more perfect models. We’ll talk about one of these models. In particular we'll talk about the Mercury 201 series of electricity meters.

First, a little about the manufacturer. The meters we are considering are produced at facilities Russian company"Incotex". The main activity of this enterprise is production electric meters- starting from the simplest single-phase household ones and ending with industrial 3-phase ones. It should be noted that electricity meters have been produced under the Mercury brand since the beginning of 2001.

Now regarding Mercury 201 electricity meters. These metering devices are produced in several modifications and have specifications 201.1, 201.2, 201.22, 201.3, 201.4, 201.5, 201.6. The series division is carried out depending on the permissible operating current, as well as on the way the energy consumption data is displayed.

Design features of the device

Structurally, all representatives of the 201 series of meters are made in the same rectangular plastic case. On the front panel of the device (on the left side) there is an LCD display of information (or “wheels” for calculating electricity), on the right there is a “plate” with the main technical parameters. The case itself, and accordingly the device itself, is quite compact and has dimensions of 105x105x65 mm (weight about 350 g).

The bottom panel of the case is removable - it protects the contacts of the device. In other words, by removing it you can gain access to the input electrical contacts of the meter. The wires are connected to these contacts using a screw connection.

As for mounting on the wall or on any other surface (at the owner’s request), the Mercury electric meter is fixed using the so-called DIN rail. Apparently, leading manufacturers consider this installation method to be the most rational, because today most metering devices are secured precisely by such a rail (for example, discussed earlier).

Characteristics of the electricity meter Mercury 201

Before considering the main technical characteristics of Mercury 201 electric meters, you should note that these devices provide special protection against theft of electricity through polarity reversal. That is, it can be argued that the methods of stopping the electric meter by changing the “phase to zero”, which the Internet is full of, are simply groundless.

For maximum clarity, I will display the characteristics of metering devices in a small table.

Externally, models of electrical measuring devices differ in indexes. Each of the above five modifications has its own limit for measuring alternating current strength, its own way of displaying electricity consumption on the front panel. The maximum operating current of the device is from 5 to 10 A; the method of indicating readings can be either liquid crystal or mechanical.

Operating principle of the Mercury 201 counter is that the primary electricity consumption signals are generated by voltage and current sensors. Then they go to a converter controlled by a microcontroller. After decoding, the signals supply information to a mechanical or liquid crystal type output device.

Electricity meter Designed for both independent accounting of electricity consumption and for work in an automatic information-measuring accounting system.

Now brand counters - the most accessible and accurate. They replace older energy metering devices with rotating disks.

Connection diagram for electricity meter M. 201 with four terminals and automatic switches

Accounting for electricity consumption is carried out by an electronic device of a modular principle. The readings of the device are not affected by whether the connection is made with direct or reverse polarity. Even by swapping the input and output wires or replacing the connector for the neutral with the phase input, it is impossible to malfunction this device.

Four meter terminals Mercury single-phase design are intended:

  • 1 – terminal for connecting the input phase wire;
  • 2 – output terminal for connecting electric current consumers;
  • 3 – power line neutral input;
  • 4 – output terminal for the neutral wire to consumers.

When connecting wires to the device, you must first remove the protective cover from it. plastic panel and unscrew the screws in each of the four cells to such an extent that the prepared, cleaned of the insulating layer and aligned ends of the wires fit into them freely. Then the wires need to be inserted into their cells and tightly clamped with screws using a Phillips screwdriver.

It is important! Before you begin connecting a single-phase Mercury meter, you should carefully study its passport, instruction manual and understand the connection diagram.

For reliability electrical contact in each cell the wire is clamped with two screws, the top screw is tightened first, then the bottom one. To avoid mixing up the wires when connecting, you should insert them into the cells in order, from the first to the fourth. You can make sure that everything is done correctly and that the contacts will be reliable by gently shaking each wire. If there is no lift movement of the exposed ends clamped with screws, the protective cover is closed.

TO RCD phase and zero are supplied, and the phase wire is supplied to the circuit breakers. Bypassing the machines, protective and neutral contacts should be laid to the connected consumers. For all consumers connected via RCD, a grounding contact must also be made.

Exits from machines and devices protective shutdown serve for connection lighting fixtures and sockets for low-power consumers. RCD used for more powerful household applianceswashing machine, boiler.

If it is necessary to use grounded consumers in a residential network, a slightly different working diagram:

The grounding wire is suitable for all sockets and technological connectors and provides protection for household appliances from short overloads.

Four checks of E.M. 201 for the correctness of the readings

Examination Mercury 201 on the correctness of the readings can be carried out by its owner independently. This is in cases where the meter malfunctions, when its readings no longer correspond to the actual electricity consumption, the owner of the house or apartment has to overpay for utilities.

The test is carried out at home independently; there is no need to call an electrician to your home.

Types of Home Checks Mercury 201:

  • lack of self-propelled guns;
  • correct connection to the network;
  • the magnitude of the accounting error;
  • lack of magnetization.

There are several different situations to check the correct operation of the device’s metering device:

  • energy consumption in a house or apartment has increased significantly without changing the mode of use of the same electricity consumers;
  • new electricity consumers were purchased and began to be actively used, but monthly electricity consumption did not increase;
  • Very high consumption electricity per month, which does not correspond to the average for housing of the same format (compare with the indicator of a neighbor or relatives);

This is necessary for verification! When similar situations arise, you need to carefully read all further advice and independently check the correct operation of the meter. To perform the test, you will need a watch or phone with a stopwatch, a calculator, a 100-watt light bulb and a multimeter.

Electric meter connection diagrams

First check - correct connection

First you need to familiarize yourself with the connection diagram to the household electrical network of the meter. This circuit is very simple, it uses only four terminals, two are input, and two are output.

If the meter of an apartment or house is connected differently, this may cause false readings of electricity consumption. In this case, you need to immediately contact the energy supervision authority. Incorrect connection is often interpreted by employees of this structure as deliberate theft of electricity. The consequence is that the user is subject to a large fine.

You can verify that the device is connected correctly using the video:

In the video, the presenter describes in detail all the steps to assess the correct connection of the electrical measuring instrument. .

If the wires are connected to the meter correctly, we move on to the next, more serious stage of verification - the presence of a self-propelled gun.

Second check - for self-propelled guns

This check is even simpler than checking for correct connection. It can be done at home; no equipment is required.

All electricity consumers in the apartment are switched off and automatic devices located below the counter. If circuit breakers were not provided when installing the device, then it is enough to unplug all household appliances from the sockets and turn off the lighting fixtures.

Next, you need to notice the current readings of the device and write them down. When observing the front panel of the device, you should make sure that its indicator does not blink and the counting mechanism does not move. After waiting 15-20 minutes, you need to make sure that the device readings have not changed.

In a working meter, no blinking should be observed, the readings remain the same. If the device changed its readings and the LED on the front panel blinked, it failed the test. You must immediately contact the organization that services electricity metering devices.

Third check – measurement error

To check the measurement error of an electric meter, you will need a 100 W light bulb, an electronic multimeter, a stopwatch with a calculator. Next, perform the following steps:

  • the voltage in the network is measured with a multimeter and the results are recorded;
  • the current flowing through the light bulb is measured;
  • multiplying the voltage by the current to obtain the power of the light bulb;
  • the light bulb is connected to the apartment’s network and the time during which the control diode blinks exactly 10 times is determined;
  • the front panel of the meter contains its constant, designated as follows: “2300 imp/kW”;
  • multiplying the current of the light bulb by the voltage, we get its real power 32 * 0.41 = 95.1 W;
  • now we need to find out what electricity consumption will occur in 2 minutes (or 120 seconds), for which we multiply the calculated power by the test time and convert the time into hours: 95.1 W * 120 sec/3600 = 3.17 W/hour;
  • the change in the device readings during the same time can be determined by multiplying its constant (see front panel) by the number of blinks, for example 1000 * 10/3200 = 3.125 W/h;
  • the error of the device is determined by the ratio of calculated consumption to real readings: (3.125 -3.17)/3.17*100% = 4%;
  • the result obtained is included in the permissible error of electric meters; it does not play a significant role in the calculation.

The fourth check is for magnetization

You cannot use a strong magnet near the meter; if an anti-magnetic seal is installed in it, it will change its indicator color, and inspectors will present claims to the user for attempting to commit fraud.

It is enough to take a thin needle and bring it to the front panel of the meter. If it is attracted to the panel, excess magnetization of the entire device is detected. You will have to buy a simple household demagnetizer, and then demagnetize the device according to the instructions included with the purchase.

An important result: knowing all the technologies for checking the meter at home, the user can be sure that he is not overpaying for the electricity used.

Two ways to install the meter Mer-th 201

Installing the Mercury 201 meter yourself in a house or apartment is possible in two ways: do everything using a special DIN rail or screw it to the back panel of the electrical panel with a universal adapter plate. But for two years now, the meter has not been equipped with these transition elements when sold; they are purchased separately.

If you entrust the installation of an electric meter to an energy company, you will have to pay for the service, but everything will be done professionally and reliably.

Details about installing the meter are shown in the video:

TOP 2-5 sites with the name “Connect EM 201”

Any information on the rules for connecting electric vehicles can be easily found on the TOP 2-5 sites for issuing upon request “Connect an electric meter " There are all the rules, sequence of actions and step by step instructions making the connection.

Having carefully studied the content of the site materials, a person even with little skills in performing electrical work can easily cope with the task.

Connect to the EM 201 network in two steps

The first thing to do when installing the Mercury 201 meter yourself - This is to de-energize the electrical supply line. Secondly, you need to connect the four wires in strict accordance with the EM 201 operating instructions.

WITH inside The connection diagram is always drawn on the terminal cover, which must be followed when performing the work.

Important! The screw terminals for connecting wires must be tightened securely. Otherwise, the connections will become hot, resulting in wasted energy and increased danger.

How to avoid mistakes when connecting 4 wires

When performing work on connecting EM 201, you need to follow three simple rules:

  1. The phase input and output should be wired with wires of one color, the output and zero input with wires of another color, as shown in the images above.
  2. The input wires are located to the left of EM 201, and the output wires go to the right.
  3. The tightening of all eight screws in the terminals must be repeated after all the wires have been connected.

These simple steps will allow you to accurately and reliably connect the wires to the device without confusing anything.

It’s also important to know!

There are two important points that require quick solution- malfunction EM 201 and safety of seals.

3 malfunctions of the electricity meter Mer-201 and how to eliminate them

Three common faults EM 201 relate:

  • poorly clamped wire terminals;
  • no LED blinking or change of device readings when consumers are switched on;
  • existing damage to the housing, sight glass, terminal cover.

When the wires are poorly clamped, sparking of the terminals is observed when a powerful consumer is turned on. Overheated insulating coatings emit the smell of burning plastic, and at times a slight smoke can be seen above the terminal cover.

If the meter stops blinking with the front panel photodiode or changes its readings when the consumers are turned on, this also indicates a malfunction.

It is very important! In the above cases, you must immediately make a statement to the energy supervision service. The specialist who arrives on call will do what is necessary for the further operation of the EM 201 or offer its replacement.

You can't joke with a filling - one of the first rules

If the device body or sight glass is accidentally damaged, further operation is undesirable - during a control check by energy supervision specialists, the incident will be considered an attempt at fraud.

A specialist from a government organization who arrives on call, after eliminating the malfunction, is obliged to check the serviceability of the seal or install a new one.

If the meter was used unsealed or the seal was damaged, the owner faces a serious fine.
