DIY garden bench: drawings and step-by-step instructions, photos of the results. Do-it-yourself garden bench for a summer residence: six projects for every taste Do-it-yourself metal garden bench

Garden benches are the most popular small architectural forms. They can be made in any size and design, but in addition to their direct purpose, benches also perform a decorative function. You can make a garden bench for yourself using our drawings and photographs.

How to make a bench from waste materials

The easiest way is to make a bench out of wood. This traditional material for garden furniture, affordable and easy to process. But even in this case, you can save money by choosing as the main material the one that literally lies under your feet.

The first option is trees, poles and stumps from your own site or a nearby forest plantation, in which sanitary felling is carried out.

Having carefully cut off a couple of medium-sized stumps, they can be placed on the base of the bench. Use poles to make a bottom crossbar for structural rigidity. And for sitting, loosen part of the trunk on the circular. If there is no equipment for longitudinal sawing, then you can take an unedged board 75 mm thick.

In this example, the bench is already more comfortable - in addition to the seat, it also has a backrest. The model is a little more complicated, since you will have to find a higher part of the trunk and process it in two steps - first make a profile cut with a “ledge”, and then split the workpiece into two halves.

And to assemble the next bench, you will need:

  • two short logs of the same diameter for the base;
  • two medium-thick poles for back support;
  • one long log, sawn into two halves (for the seat and back).

In short logs, you need to choose a groove so that the long log fits into it. Then the seat is secured in the grooves, and each pole is fixed at two points - to the base and to the seat. For fastening, it is better to choose powerful self-tapping wood bolts.

Another budget material for a country bench is pallets (wooden pallets). But not just any pallet is suitable for making garden furniture. Ideally, you need one from a good edged boards, the so-called Euro pallet, which can be identified by the EUR marking.

Basically, standard width The euro pallet is somewhat large for the seat - 80 cm. You can shorten it to 67 cm by cutting it along the contour of the central bar. But you don’t have to do this. Here are some examples of simple designs with different options bases and seats:

1. A bench made of four pallets uncut to width. Three serve as the base, and the fourth serves as the back. You will have to remove some of the support bars from the pallet for the backrest, and ensure the rigidity of the bench using wooden slats.

2. In this case, four pallets are also used, but already trimmed. To secure the backrest, three ropes woven with a scythe are used, and wallpaper nails are used for decoration.

3. This bench is made from just two pallets. One is whole, and the second is cut and, as it were, bent at an angle - it serves as both a seat and a backrest. The design is good for its mobility - there are small wheels as legs.

Perhaps the only inconvenience of using Euro pallets as a source material is standard sizes 80x120 cm. They to some extent limit the possibilities for creativity. The use of ordinary lumber (boards, beams and beams) allows you to make a garden bench to suit every taste.

Board and block

It’s worth saying right away that any bench drawing can be adjusted for specific conditions. The only limitation is that the thickness of the board and the cross-section of the beam are sufficient to provide load-bearing properties.

Below is a drawing of a bench, which is made of only three “paired” elements:

  • seat and back;
  • a short support (back leg) made of a trapezoid-shaped board;
  • long support (front leg).

1- front leg; 2 - rear leg; 3 - seat; 4 - back; 5 - front view; 6 - side view

The result is a stable structure with a triangle at the base and two transverse stiffeners.

This is what this bench looks like in real life.

This drawing shows the bench in a more complex design. To make it, you need a 40x140 mm board (supports, back and seat), a 40x70 mm block (short bundles of supports) and a 20 mm board (long bundle between the sidewalls).

And this is the same design, but using a board and a block 75 mm thick. Small differences in the base and attachment of the ligaments are not fundamental.

In principle, there is only one condition - the boards in the seat are fastened with a small gap, sufficient to compensate for the expansion of the wood under high humidity.

Large forms

Wooden benches in a “large format” look original.

For example, this “fat” one unedged board across the entire width of the log. Covered with transparent varnish, it conveys the natural beauty of wood with all its color transitions.

From rounded logs you can build not only a cottage or a bathhouse, but also a garden bench like this.

And from timber you can assemble original chair, capable of serving not only under a canopy, but also on outdoors— removable pillows are easy to bring into the house in bad weather.

Stone and wood

Stone, like wood, also fits organically into the landscape suburban area. Of course, a smooth slab is practically never found in nature, but you can use sawn stone.

The next option is easier to implement - the bench is made of small blocks wild stone. And since such a surface is not only cold, but also uneven, you can’t do without pillows.

Pillows add comfort, but you have to constantly bring them in and out. That is why wood is used for seats on garden benches, regardless of the base material. Like this one original bench, at the base of which a gabion is used (a mesh cage filled with stone, crushed stone or pebbles).

Concrete is no less popular for making the base of a bench. But it’s difficult to make a form with a complex contour for pouring at once, but small formwork is simple. And even a “cold seam” when poured in two steps will not affect the strength of the structure (such as in this photo).

Another option artificial stone– hollow construction concrete blocks. It is enough to fasten them together with good masonry glue, and lay a beam in the cavity, and the bench is ready.

Metal and wood

The simplest benches in design metal frame use a square profile.

You can weld two sidewalls in the shape of the letter “H” from a profile pipe, and a solid wooden seat will also serve as a “stiffener.”

The following example also uses solid wood as a stiffening element, but the supports are made in the form of a square with a cross member for attaching the seat.

And this is the simplest thing Basic structure from a square profile, the strength and rigidity of the welded base is sufficient for the seat to be made from a wooden block.

The following photo shows a factory-made bench.

But if you have a pipe bender in your home workshop (and it’s easy to make one with your own hands), then bend two types of arches and a “wave” from round pipe Just. Then the metal blanks must be welded, plastic plugs must be placed on the legs (sold for any profile and pipe size) and the bars must be secured to the “wave”.

A mandatory attribute of any summer cottage is comfortable bench, which is made with your own hands from wood for the garden.

And it performs not so much aesthetic functions as practical ones.

A properly installed bench will provide an excellent opportunity to relax after hard work and at the same time admire the result of your labors.

You can daydream alone or hang out with friends.

Which you can do with your own hands - optimal solution and for decorating the dacha. But not always ready-made options for a country garden sold in stores can satisfy the owner’s wishes.

And only an exclusive creation, created with your own hands, can change the landscape design around the dacha and make your vacation more comfortable. Some projects can be seen in the photo.

Many ideas can be implemented around dacha spaces.

Where should construction begin?

It’s not difficult to make a bench with your own hands for a garden, terrace or even a bathhouse. The main thing is to know exactly for what purposes the garden bench will be built and clearly imagine the finished result.

Well, have some knowledge about which we'll talk Further.

The photo below shows examples of garden benches.

Having decided to make a wooden bench on their own, some (especially beginners) craftsmen make a serious mistake.

Of course, you really want to quickly see your creation, around which you can plant flowers, but without preparatory work its creation is indispensable.

Therefore, do not rush to pick up boards, nails and a hammer, but be patient and carry out the initial work.

Preparatory work to create the image

The first step is to make a drawing of the product. If you have no work experience, do not try to create drawings complex design(for example, a bench around a tree), but start with simple options.

Sketch development includes the following points: appearance products (a bench will be simple or complex) and choice of sizes.

When calculating the length and width of the bench that you will make with your own hands, take into account the existing standard parameters:

  • Height – 400-500 mm;
  • Width – 500-550 mm;
  • Back height – 350-500 mm.

This will make the work much easier, and the product will be reliable and convenient, practical for any garden.

If there are shaped elements around the structure, they are all first drawn in the form of templates on thick cardboard.

Preparing tools for work

Kit necessary tools To build a wooden bench, usually every man has one.

For work you will need:

  • Hand saw;
  • Plane;
  • Hammer and nails (it is better to use a screwdriver and self-tapping screws);
  • Wood sanding machine (replaced with regular sandpaper);
  • Level, tape measure, pencil.

If any of the above is missing, then you need to buy it or borrow it from friends.

At the same time, pay attention to the fact that the tool is of good quality, otherwise a wooden bench made for a summer house or garden will quickly break.

A short video will tell you how to choose it.

Consider one more nuance: the selected wood must be well dried, otherwise over time the parts will become distorted and the structure will become unsuitable for use.

This is especially true if the bench is placed in a bathhouse.

Details that make up the bench

The main components of a wooden garden bench are:

  • Front and rear legs;
  • Beams running across;
  • Beam running along;
  • Rails for seat and back.

The moment is extremely important. During manufacturing, it is necessary to strictly take into account the dimensions; drawings will definitely come in handy.

Even the slightest discrepancy will lead to reworking not only one part, but also the entire structure.

The video below shows how to make garden wooden benches with your own hands.

Wooden parts must not have structural defects such as cracks or knots.

If it is not possible to find wood without them, then you should carefully treat the defective area and around it.

Manufacturing of parts and trial fitting

First of all, we saw the boards. Considering that the resulting wooden bench width will be 140 mm, we will need to make:

  • 5 boards 1500 mm long;
  • 2 boards 360 mm each;
  • 2 boards 520 mm each. They will be used for bars that will connect the legs and seats;
  • 2 boards 720 mm each. It is necessary to make a cut on them, since the boards will simultaneously hold both the legs of the bench and its back.

Examples of such wooden parts can be seen in the photo below. Dimensions can be changed according to your drawing or sketch. A corner bench with a backrest looks great, around which you can then plant flowers.

After the boards are ready, you should make a trial fit of the structural parts. It will be immediately clear where there are shortcomings and inconsistencies; correcting them at this moment is easy. The boards are planed and sanded.

The edges are processed. Your DIY bench is starting to take shape.

How to properly assemble a bench made of wood?

Having prepared the above parts, you can begin to assemble the garden product into a single whole. The process will require maximum attention.

In addition, it should be remembered that wooden parts can be connected in different ways. The most common elements for connection are:

  • Nails or screws;
  • Bolts, washers and nuts;
  • Wooden chops.

The choice of a specific type will depend on the load on the bench during operation. For example, if it is intended for a child, it will be enough to use screws or nails.

Heavier loads will require bolts and nuts. If you plan to place the bench in a bathhouse, then it is necessary to disguise the metal joints and the space around them.

Connecting parts using bolts

For of this type connections will require a drill and a drill bit, the diameter of which should be slightly larger than the diameter of the bolts.

In this case, they will easily fit into the prepared holes. If the diameter of the bolt head and nut is several smaller size holes, use special washers.

Hats connecting elements can be easily hidden from view. Using a special crown, a small recess is drilled in the place where the bolt passes through the wood.

It turns out to be a kind of niche into which the puck falls. The main thing is to choose the desired depth of the niche.

Then it is sealed with a mixture of small shavings and PVA glue. You can watch a video on the topic and study the work process in more detail.

These steps will help give your wooden garden bench an aesthetic appearance. In the photo it is impossible to see the places where there are connecting elements.

Assembly order

Having prepared all the necessary parts for the future garden bench, drilled the holes, you can begin assembly.

It is performed as follows:

  • First of all, the base is assembled, which consists of legs, the crossbar running lengthwise is screwed on;
  • Cross bars are attached;
  • The beams are screwed in, the purpose of which is to strengthen the structure and add strength to it;
  • The boards intended for the seat are attached last with your own hands.

On final stage To make a garden bench with your own hands, special wooden plugs are made.

They can be made with a jigsaw, or with an ordinary small hacksaw.

For this purpose a small beam round shape sawn crosswise into pieces, the thickness of which should be equal to the depth of the recess in which the bolt and washer are placed.

The standard diameter sizes of such plugs are 15, 20, 22, 24, 30, 32, 35 mm. They are attached to PVA or sealant that does not allow moisture to pass through.

Increasing the service life of the bench

Well, your creation for the garden is ready. But the process is not over, as some more steps need to be done.

The photo shows that the corner bench with a backrest is located on the street, as in most areas.

This means that it will be exposed to natural phenomena such as precipitation. Moisture will render the tree unusable much faster.

Accordingly, it is necessary to protect it in order to prolong its operation for the maximum period.

Antiseptic treatment

As an antiseptic, it is better to choose an impregnation that has the property of penetration.

It contains various additives based on acrylic and resin, mixed with a special composition.

This whole mixture perfectly protects the wood from rotting and the harmful effects of insects.

Agree, this is quite important in the garden. And if the bench should be placed in a bathhouse, this will protect it from excess moisture.

Painting a bench in a summer cottage

After impregnation, a self-made wooden bench with a back must be coated with a varnish composition intended for outdoor use.

It perfectly withstands temperatures, atmospheric conditions and other negative influences. Perfect option to the bathhouse.

Regular paint should be used immediately after the impregnation procedure. After it has completely dried, the product must again be varnished. The procedure is simple and does not take much time.

See the photo of the bench covered with varnish here.

Impregnation and painting work must be carried out in protective equipment, such as glasses and gloves. The composition of mixtures and paints contains substances that can be harmful to health if they come into contact with the skin or eyes.

To sum up the above, we can safely say that making garden benches from wood yourself will not be a problem.

They can be rectangular, just straight, angular, or in the form of a sofa. Whatever you want, your imagination is not limited by anything, you can make a real dacha masterpiece for your dacha.

In the photo you can see options for designs of garden benches, and detailed video will make the manufacturing process even clearer.

A comfortable and beautiful garden bench will always find its place on summer cottage or near a luxury cottage. Sitting on a bench you can admire the beautiful nature surrounding you, or you can sit down to rest after long work on a summer cottage. The article will discuss what types of benches there are and how to build this useful product yourself.

Types of modern garden benches

Today there are many types of garden benches that can be purchased in stores. It could be:

It will take a long time to list the types of benches that we are offered to buy in stores today. But the best option for a summer cottage would be a bench made with your own hands. In this case, you can be sure that it will be strong, reliable and will serve for a long time.

Basic elements of a bench

A bench can be made from different materials, but the most popular are wooden or wrought iron benches. Plus they are more practical. Basically, all benches consist of the following elements:

  • the support on which the bench stands;
  • sitting;
  • back;
  • armrests;
  • fastenings

Types of supports for benches

Bench supports can be made from different materials. For example, quite popular are steel or forged supports. People often think that such structures are caused by constant contact with environment will rust or wear out easily. But this is not true, because today there are metals that do not corrode and practically do not oxidize.

There are also benches with concrete supports. Of course, it may seem rough and short-lived, but in order to add zest to the appearance of such a bench, you need to use your imagination. For example, if the bench supports are made of concrete, then the back and seat can be made of rods. The disadvantage of such a bench may be its large size and fragility.

If possible, you can purchase supports for the bench made of natural stone. Such a bench will look luxurious on a personal plot or near a cottage. The disadvantages of this type of support include the rather high cost and heavy weight. In this case, you will need to immediately determine the place where the bench will be installed, since moving it will be very difficult later.

Will be no less popular wooden supports. They are quite strong and durable. In addition, the tree can be used to make garden benches with your own hands. This material is cheap and available. A bench made entirely of wood will decorate the area. But this material has its drawbacks: wood can swell and rot. Therefore, a wooden bench needs proper care.

Materials for making the back and seat of the bench

Popular materials for making the seat and back of a bench today are: plastic and wood. You can, of course, buy a completely stone bench, but it will be quite cold. There is also an option to make the back and seats of the bench from carved sheets, but this is quite difficult and can cost a pretty penny.

Important elements in benches are fasteners. They can be bolts, nails, metal corners, metal screws.

Wooden bench option No. 1

If you do not have much experience working with wood, then the best material To make a bench with your own hands, you will need pallets. They can be purchased anywhere they sell them. wooden beams, boards, etc.

To make one bench you will need two wooden pallet, saw, paint, screws, screwdriver, metal plates for fastening. One pallet will be the seat, and the second will be the backrest. First you need to place one pallet horizontally and move the second pallet towards it, which will located vertically. This will create the back and seat of the bench. They need to be connected to each other. To do this, you can use metal plates or corners. Such elements are fastened using self-tapping screws and a screwdriver.

Next to finished design you need to attach the legs. They can be cut from small beams. The bench should have 4 legs. Moreover, the rear legs can be made long so that they can fasten the back and seat together, and the front legs should be short. To give the bench a complete look, you can make handrails and sew cushions on the seats.

Street bench option No. 2

The bench will be located between two tree trunks. The distance between them should be 160−180 centimeters. The height of such a bench will be 55-60 cm. For such an outdoor bench you will need to purchase 3 boards made of durable wood. Two boards will be longer and the middle board will be shorter.

First you need to make a blank from the middle board. To do this, cut both edges of it in a semicircle. In the future, it will need to be installed between two trees, and such cutouts will help to insert it tightly. To beautifully trim the ends of the board in a semicircle, you can use jigsaw.

By installing a horizontally cut board, you can mark where the supports for the bench will be installed. The rest of the boards will be attached to them. It is worth considering the fact that the bench must be secured in such a way that the trees are not damaged. Each tree will need to be installed two support boards. Next, you need to make a mark in the center of the board. There will be fastenings there. Two support boards will be located on both sides of the tree, and they can be connected to each other using a long threaded rod, onto which nuts will then be screwed.

When such supports are ready, you can put the previously prepared middle board on them. Next, using self-tapping screws and a screwdriver, we connect the middle board with the fasteners. It turns out to be a bench. But it will be quite narrow. Therefore, the prepared two boards can be attached to the other two sides of the trees. For this too you will need screws. When these boards are attached to the supports. Then you can cut the long rod. That's it, the street bench between two trees is ready, such benches are convenient to make in the garden and where trees are planted close to each other.

A bench on a summer cottage or personal plot is, first of all, place to relax. Therefore, it must be comfortable, stable and functional. But also about beautiful design benches should not be forgotten. This item landscape design should fit beautifully into the overall design of the summer cottage or yard where the bench will stand.

Garden furniture can become not only an interior decoration, but also an excellent place to relax. A do-it-yourself bench is a source of pride and a foundation for the future furniture set.

Making this accessory is not as difficult as it seems. It is important to decide on the material and suitable design from the very beginning.

About materials

Plastic parts

Such a bench will have many advantages.

  • Affordable price category.
  • Easy care.
  • Mobility.

Pleases big choice color options.

Plastic furniture also has its disadvantages.

  1. Cheap look. Unlike wood.
  2. Ability to fade in the sun;
  3. The surface quickly deforms.

What about the tree?

Ideal for making furniture. It lends itself to any type of processing, has a noble appearance, and does not require complex work during installation. Any type of wood can be chosen. The main requirement is the absence of defects and high-quality drying.

Stone products

Material natural origin with an attractive appearance. Will fit into any interior design. The composition will look stylish and unusual, elegant. Natural stone has many advantages, but is not without its disadvantages. This option is also easy to do.

  • It is not always safe to sit on such benches, for health reasons as well. Wood has no such disadvantages.
  • It is recommended to purchase pillows and warm blankets as a set.
  • Such benches cannot be moved from place to place; only stationary installation is possible.

What about metal?

Garden benches made using the forging method, cold or hot, will be an excellent decoration in any garden.

These are stylish and beautiful designs for which it is better to purchase decorative ornaments. Metal will be a good complement to glass or wood. Keep it simple.

Requirements for the bench

  1. Convenience. The bench should be ergonomic; this is especially important for relaxation. Comfort and convenience play a role. Good option– the presence of a back in the product.
  2. It is important that the bench can withstand even serious loads. Accordingly, the quality of fittings and furniture should be at their best.
  3. The material must withstand any changes in weather conditions without deformation, since it is created for outdoor installation.

Design and its features

1500 millimeters - this length for the back and seat of the bench is enough for three people to sit comfortably. Other dimensions also matter. The seat width reaches 400 mm, the back angle is 18-20 degrees. The height of the backrest is 900 millimeters, the height of the seat is 450.

From the materials we need to take:

  • Varnish, primer;
  • Sandpaper effect for wood;
  • Screwdriver;
  • Electric planer for wood. We will use it to process chamfers and polish the surfaces of boards.
  • We will cut the boards using an electric jigsaw.
  • Required number of screws.
  • We will strengthen the structure of the bench with our own hands using self-tapping screws with dimensions of 40 by 40 mm.
  • We make blanks for the front legs of the bench. Thickness – 35-40 millimeters, size – 360 by 150.
  • Holders for the back and legs of the bench also require separate blanks. The thickness is the same 35-40 millimeters, but the size is 900 by 150.
  • Do not make a product with your own hands without wooden planks. The thickness is the same, and the dimensions are 1500 by 150 mm.

We make a wooden structure

  • You can immediately purchase boards of the required size for the bench. If suitable option no - we use a jigsaw to cut the boards with our own hands. A miter saw will also become an indispensable assistant. This can be done quickly.
  • The wood must be carefully processed after the desired length has been achieved. Sanding requires blanks for the seat and backrest. You need to use an electric planer to process the ends of the boards. The best option– rounded shapes.
  • We set the correct angle of inclination with our own hands to the long rear legs of the bench. They also play the role of the frame of the entire structure. We apply markings to two wooden blanks with a length of 900 millimeters. It's not all that difficult to do.
  • 400 millimeters is the height of the bench; we mark it with our own hands first. No additional processing is needed in this area of the material. We make a 20 degree cut along the entire length of the product, starting from the segment. This is how the angle of inclination for the backrest is formed. The angle of inclination and height on the two legs at the back should be the same.
  • The bench legs are assembled first. 280 mm – distance between elements front and rear. The beam that connects the legs is cut across the entire width of the bench. Its size is 500 mm. It’s good if the strapping is on top and bottom.
  • The sides of the bench are connected to each other with your own hands after the assembly is completed. To connect, we use boards on which you will need to sit. They are screwed to the upper bars of the trim using self-tapping screws. The gaps between wooden pieces must have different sizes. They help remove moisture and organize circulation.
  • Let's move on to strengthening the bench with our own hands. Without this action, the product will not be durable and stable. We use timber to make bottom trim on the legs. We screw two blanks with a length of 1500 mm to the front and rear elements. There can be only one crossbar if there is not enough lumber.
  • We install the backrest in the bench with our own hands. This is one of last steps. It is recommended to maintain a distance of 380 millimeters from the seat for the second board, 200 millimeters from the seat for the first.
  • Remains only finishing coat shops. Varnish and deep impregnation will always help you protect yourself as much as possible from external influences. You can forget about pests, mold and moisture.

How to work with metal?

Garden plots are decorated not only with furniture made of wood. Metal can also become an indispensable assistant in creating comfortable places to relax. It is not necessary to master hot forging techniques for this.

Cold forging is also quite suitable for this. We simply weld a frame from metal blanks into a single structure. Decorative elements will enhance the appearance.

detailed instructions

  • We start with developing the dimensions and dimensions of the bench. Standard height backrests – 800-900 mm. Width – 400-500 mm. Length 1500 mm. The most simple work– with angular shapes. It is recommended to start with more simple models.
  • We make a frame for the seat. We cut out a metal pipe. The dimensions we need are: 2 fragments of 400 mm and 2 of 1500 mm. We weld the parts so that they take on a rectangular shape. It is permissible to weld 2 additional stiffeners to make the structure more durable.
  • Next we need legs. Metal pipe cut into 4 parts, 460 mm each. The blanks are then connected to the corners of the bench. Additional stiffening ribs between the front and rear legs will not be superfluous.
  • We make the back. We weld together one piece 1500 mm long into another 440 mm long. We then weld the structure to the part of the bench, which is already ready. 15-20 degrees – optimal angle backrest tilt. Then your vacation will be comfortable.
  • The backrest can also be strengthened with stiffening ribs.
  • At the final stage, all seams are cleaned. The frame is coated with a primer.

Beam and board: the simplest forms

There are a large number of design options and designs. There are also the simplest ones, some prefer wood carving. They become real works of art.

A wooden bench without a back is the simplest solution. It is allowed to use boards up to 75 mm thick. Each element consists of two parts.

We assemble a seat from two boards, the ends are beveled. It is better to provide a gap between the elements if you plan to place the structure on open area where there is no heating. The gaps compensate for the swelling of the wood and allow you to get rid of moisture in large quantities.

Each leg consists of two glued elements. A pin or dowel will make the connection more reliable. Two short beams for support must be secured to each of the legs. This will allow you to secure the seat itself. Self-tapping screws and glue, grooves are indispensable assistants for fastening. Beams and legs are attached to each board on last stages work.

Radial cutouts and curly elements complicate the work a little, but if desired, this task can be solved without problems. For example, choose a rectangle shape.

The drawings are not dogmas; they can be changed at your discretion.

The beam is at the bottom unless the bench is very long. The beam itself becomes a stiffening rib in such a situation. The dowel involves the use of both closed and open installation, the latter option is very unusual. The material can be in any form. It is even possible to use options that are used to build wooden houses.

Preface

The desire to decorate and somehow highlight garden plot familiar to all owners. In practice, it can be implemented in different ways: from installing garden sculptural compositions to creating artificial landscape areas like alpine slide. But in most cases, dacha owners tend to use more discreet methods and combine aesthetics with practicality. This is most clearly reflected in the appearance of the landscaping elements. There are many options for garden benches on sale, but most summer residents prefer to create them themselves, using their creativity, imagination and ingenuity. The results sometimes turn out to be much more successful than industrial designs, and the pleasure experienced by the master cannot be assessed. To know how and from what a garden bench can be created with your own hands, you don’t have to storm bookstores.

Requirements that a garden bench must meet

Stability is one of the basic parameters of a homemade garden bench

There are many requirements for such a simple element of landscaping a summer cottage. It is necessary to immediately clarify that they are not some kind of documented standard; rather, they are the operational and aesthetic requirements of the owner for the quality of the product.

  1. A certain degree of comfort, convenience for the user. Rest on fresh air should give real pleasure, which is largely ensured by the design of the bench. A product with successful ergonomics, equipped with a backrest that allows you to lean back and relax is the best option, for the creation of which you need to take care in advance of choosing the most convenient design.
  2. Safety. It is necessary to ensure proper strength and reliability of the product. There should be no possibility of overturning or destruction under a sitting person. All surfaces that can be touched by the user must be are carefully processed, burrs or sharp elements are removed, the presence of protruding nails or other parts dangerous to humans must not be allowed.
  3. Resistance to external influences. The bench is under open air and takes on all atmospheric manifestations: precipitation, scorching rays of the sun, wind and other loads. Some materials are capable of changing their shape or surface quality (for example, wood), so it is important to periodically inspect them and take measures to eliminate any defects found.
  4. Decorative effect, a special look for a garden bench. The performance qualities of the product are not the only exceptional ones. The opportunity to create on the site a certain element of a fairy tale, a cozy and comfortable island of communication is undoubtedly attractive.

Materials for production: what to choose

The manufacture of a garden bench, as a rule, is made from the most accessible and inexpensive material. Scroll suitable materials for each owner is determined by his capabilities and skills, the presence of certain tools and equipment. There are designs of garden benches made from:

  • Wood. One of the most accessible and widespread materials. Allows the creation of structures with different degrees of processing, finishing, shape or size. Almost all users have woodworking skills, but manufacturing will require a fairly large number of tools.
    The durability of wood products used outdoors is low. Need to protective covering or impregnation.

    Wooden benches will last much longer if they are coated with a special varnish and the legs are provided with additional protection options

  • Metal. Working with it requires certain skills and tools. Material accepts different ways processing, sold in the form of finished products (profile pipes or rolled products), allows you to create very attractive samples.

    In terms of base design, iron is a more convenient and durable material

    The strength and durability of a metal bench are high, but some care and protection against corrosion are necessary.

  • Stone. The material is specific, the result largely depends on the type of stone and the processing method.

    Not everyone can do such masterpieces.

    A bench made of stone can look different, but in any case it will require effort and time to make.

    Benches are not always used for their intended purpose, and the choice is always up to the owner of the summer cottage

    At the same time, the strength and durability of the material are comparable to the service life of the house or site itself.

  • Plastic. Typically, cuttings from plumbing or sewer pipes, other parts or remains from facing or finishing work.

    PVC and other types of pipes are easy to assemble for interesting designs of benches and benches

    The material is easy to cut, allows welding or other joining methods, does not rot and is not susceptible to moisture. The strength of plastic is lower than that of other materials, but it has elasticity that allows it to withstand mechanical impacts of a certain force without destruction.

  • The most common option is when two or more materials are used in manufacturing. Most often, a supporting structure (frame) is made of metal or stone, concrete, brick, etc. Boards are most often used for the seat and back, although there are other types of construction.

What criteria do you use to choose the right model?

A beginner should start with simple models based on available materials

The bench model (type of construction, design) can be realized in a variety of shapes or styles. The choice is determined by necessity, the needs of the owner or other considerations. The selection criteria are primarily the purpose and dimensions of the product. For some, a small bench is enough to sit down and take a breath. Others prefer to install a set of a table with two benches on the sides, suitable for family or friendly gatherings. The final choice should combine the owner’s wishes in the following categories:

  • Dimensions.
  • Material.
  • Performance style.
  • Composition (number of items, composition).

Factors influencing the choice of the optimal option may include:

  • Plot size.
  • Climatic conditions in the region.
  • The owner's capabilities both financially and technologically.

It is important to take into account the number of people who may be on the site at the same time and choose the optimal design and style.

Many people solve the problem using available materials or elements that require almost no additional action. Others create real masterpieces, spending a lot of time and effort on them.

Step-by-step instructions, drawings and diagrams for assembling garden benches with your own hands

You can design garden furniture yourself. For those who do not have the time or desire to create a project, there are ready-made drawings and manufacturing instructions. Let's look at some options that can inspire home craftsmen to create their own product. It is not necessary to follow the instructions inside and out; you can only use the idea itself or some points. The main thing is that the information turns out to be useful for land owners and helps in making their own, original model of a garden bench.

Made of wood

There are many design options for garden benches made of wood. The most traditional form is a bench with a back, an approximate drawing of which can be seen in the figure.

The drawing shows a model of a stable simple structure

The sizes indicated in the diagram are the most common, with the exception of the length, which can be changed at will.

For production you will need:

  • Edged boards 30–40 mm thick, 140–160 mm wide.
  • Tape measure, ruler, square.
  • Hacksaw, electric saw or jigsaw.
  • Electric or manual plane.
  • Electric drill, screwdriver.
  • Hammer, pliers, hacksaw.
  • Screws, nails.
  • Varnish or paint, brush, appropriate solvent.

Procedure:

  1. Cut the boards to lengths corresponding to the dimensions indicated in the diagram.
  2. Process them with an electric or manual plane and chamfer them.
  3. The backrests have a bevel that creates an inclination. Mark the workpieces and cut the corner with a jigsaw or circular saw.

    Please note that the length of the screws in this design gradually decreases

  4. Assemble the frame by attaching crossbars to the legs and a longitudinal strip at the bottom.

    Cover the legs with varnish on all sides, including the one that will stand on the ground.

  5. Attach the boards to the back and seat.

    The seat can be made narrower and the back straighter

This option can be made for permanent installation, for which the lower part of the legs must be extended by the amount of immersion in the ground. It must be taken into account that wood rots quickly, so before diving you need to apply a layer of hot bitumen or at least wrap the legs with roofing felt.

A bench with a backrest is considered one of the complex options. You can create more simple design using logs sawn lengthwise.

In this model, some negligence is a sign of style

Smooth (flat) parts form the seat and back (if needed). By slightly complicating the design, you can get a set of two benches and a table that looks deliberately rough, but stylish.

In some situations, a folding design is convenient, which can turn from a bench with a back into a set of two benches and a table. Owners of small plots will appreciate this option.

Transformable benches require precise sizes

The back, the lower edge of which rises, becomes a tabletop, and half of the seat is moved to the opposite side and becomes a second bench. You can find many options for transforming benches.

A transforming bench is the peak of carpentry art and is often beyond the power of a beginner

There are benches installed around tree trunks. They are in the shade and do not occupy a separate space, which is important in small areas. The manufacture of such a design is simple and does not require large quantity time. There may be options designed for sitting with your back to the trunk.

It’s not the most convenient option for conversations, but placing flowers on it is easy!

There are other designs that, in addition to the seat, form a circular version of the table. In this case, people are placed facing the tree.

To avoid rapid deterioration, any wooden structure is coated with varnish or impregnation.

Made of metal or wood-metal

Metal benches are highly durable, reliable, and elegant.

Metal products are exquisite, but not always comfortable

The only drawback is the metal's tendency to corrode. The best option- use of a profile pipe of rectangular or oval cross-section. The best way to create a product is by welding - this significantly speeds up the work and provides a high-quality and durable connection.

To work you will need tools:

  • Welding machine, set of electrodes.
  • Grinder with cutting wheel.
  • Roulette, ruler.
  • Scribbler, chalk or talcum powder.
  • Clamps for temporary fixation of parts.

There can be many design options, and you can add any element at almost any stage of the assembly. The main part of the bench is the seat, which is a kind of lattice mounted on support legs.

The manufactured product must also be coated with paint or other protective material.

Creating a bench only from metal does not give the best results. Even in appearance, such a product looks too hard and cold.

Most often, combined structures are created in which only the supporting frame, legs and back supports are metal. All elements that a person touches are made of wood. Similar designs are found everywhere and are familiar to everyone.

A bench with a curved back looks more elegant, but requires a little more skill.

They are quite simple and reliable, allowing you to replace faulty ones if necessary. wooden parts. The main advantage can be considered the absence of specialized wooden elements - only bars of a certain cross-section are required, which are attached to the base using bolts and nuts.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. A working drawing is drawn up indicating all dimensions. If you are using a ready-made project, then you can skip this point.
  2. Parts are cut from the pipe to the required length according to specifications.
  3. The parts are connected to each other by welding.
  4. If the back and seat are wooden, then the corresponding bars are cut and processed.
  5. Holes are drilled on the base for bolts for the seat and backrest.
  6. The base is covered with a layer protective paint. The most popular option is black bitumen.
  7. While the base is drying, it is recommended to simultaneously varnish or paint the wooden parts.
  8. The bench is assembled and installed in place.

If you have a pipe bender on hand, you can create a very attractive design with elegant curved armrests.

Such models are created using a pipe bender, and you also need to be able to use it

Such a bench will take a little more time than regular option with straight lines, and the effect will be much higher.

Concrete slabs combined with wood

Design option for a garden bench using concrete slabs less common as a base than wooden or metal samples. Nevertheless, the owners of such products note their decorative value and durability. To create such structures, it is necessary to place concrete hollow blocks of a certain size. The simplest version of the design is assembled from rectangular slabs like paving or facing, which are drilled and tightened with threaded rods, placing wooden boards between the slabs.

They perform several functions at once - they connect the supports to each other and form a seat.

A concrete-wooden bench is not suitable for every garden design, because it looks somewhat massive

It is advisable to select the thickness of the slabs so that the gaps between the boards are not too large, as this creates discomfort for a sitting person. If suitable slabs are not at hand, you can solve the problem by laying additional flooring from boards laid horizontally. This option will allow you to get a seat without any gaps at all.

In addition to slabs, you can use other types of blocks.

One of the simplest options - fixation is required only for blocks Using imagination, the user is able to create a lot of design options. If desired and possible, you can make formwork and pour your own version concrete base

having an exclusive appearance or configuration.

At your summer cottage you can find many improvised elements that can be used to create original and stylish pieces of garden furniture. One option is to use pallets from bricks or cinder blocks left over from construction or renovation. Recently, through the efforts of designers and marketers, furniture made from pallets (pallets) has become fashionable; it is used not only in the country, but also in residential premises.

Pallets are now truly in demand in garden design, and their scope of application is not limited to furniture alone

Making a bench from pallets is easy. You just need to install them on top of each other in the right way. You don’t even have to connect them together, since the pallets are quite stable and lie motionless in a stack, and if necessary, it’s easy to build another composition out of them by attaching a table or additional seats.

Uncomplicated and, moreover, in its own way stylish option: savings and originality!

Another interesting option- use of old chairs. There is also wide scope for imagination here. The easiest way is to disassemble the chairs, take the back legs, which are structurally connected to the backs.

Try to take chairs of decent quality

A frame to the size of the seat is assembled from the bars and attached to the backrests with legs installed opposite each other. If necessary, the backrests can be connected at the top on one side, resulting in a solid back support.

This design is suitable for a maximum of two, but it is better to make it for children

Another way is to arrange them tightly in a row and connect them together at the sides.

Other options

There are other ways to make garden benches. The imagination of users has no limits, as practice has shown, to make garden furniture can be made from almost anything. For example, benches made from scraps plastic pipes. They are collected as in the usual way using standard fittings, or by welding or gluing along the side surfaces.

Cheap and cheerful: nothing extra, everything goes into the house!

At the top, the pipes form a flat plane, and at the bottom, supports are created from pipes of the same length. The remaining tubes, shorter ones, simply “hang” above the ground.

Other, no less original version making benches for the dacha - using thick tree branches.

Benches of this type are an excellent accent in the design of a country-style cottage.

If old trees have been cut down or trimmed nearby, this option can be used at no cost. The bench is assembled using screws or nails. You can make the drawing yourself or adapt a ready-made version.

Making a garden bench does not require a very technological result and even allows for some negligence. The main advantage of such furniture is not the quality of production, but the original and unexpected idea, idea, design discovery. It is important to accurately grasp the style and create an accurate image of the product, which corresponds to the maximum extent with the appearance of the entire site, house, and surrounding landscape. Sometimes two pieces of wood placed on top of each other create a greater effect than a complex and expensive structure made from the most modern materials. You should not undertake complex and expensive work; it is better to use your imagination and create a unique product.
