Hang the chandelier on the bar on the hook. How to hang a chandelier: installation and connection to the electrical network

How to hang a chandelier from the ceiling with your own hands? It would seem, what a question. Slide the top cap of the chandelier down, hang it on the hook, connect the wires, push the cap on - that’s all. But even in this simplest case, difficulties may arise. Which? Let's figure it out.

How are chandeliers hung?

There are four ways to hang chandeliers:

  • The ceiling hook is the oldest and most reliable. Requires a solid ceiling and special fastening in it.
  • Standard mounting plate(bracket) – due to the distribution of the load over several fastening points with a low weight, the chandelier is quite reliable when fastened with dowel nails into plastic sleeves.
  • A cross mounting strip works similar to a straight mounting strip, but has more attachment points. Used for chandeliers adjacent to the ceiling.
  • The I-beam mounting platform is designed for mounting heavy chandeliers at several points.

All these mounting methods do not allow the chandelier to be pulled close to the ceiling in low rooms. The mounting strips are curved to allow wire exit. Further in this article we will describe a modification of the mounting strip, which allows you to press the chandelier close to the ceiling.

Installation of standard chandelier mounts is simple: using self-tapping screws in sleeve-clips. The diameter of the screws can be determined by the mounting holes in the mounting plate; screw length – 40-60 mm. For low ceilings, it is preferable to use chandeliers without a rod.

Much more attention should be paid to safety precautions when installing chandeliers: when working at a height, even a slight electric shock can lead to a fall and serious injury. Various non-standard situations related to the suspension and installation of chandeliers will also be considered: suspended ceiling with a chandelier, how to hang a chandelier on drywall.

Phase indicator and wire phasing

First of all, you need to check the phasing of the wires for the chandelier. The neutral wire (neutral) is common, and the phase wires are connected to the lamp sections through a switch.

The phase/zero of the wiring is determined by a special device - a phase indicator. It can be purchased at any electrical goods store. The indicator is inexpensive. Phase indicators come with a neon lamp and a quenching resistor and electronic ones.

The indicator looks like a screwdriver. When using it, the device is lightly clamped between the index and middle fingers of the right hand in the place intended for this; it is either highlighted in color or has a notch and is separated from the sting by a safety cuff. TOUCHING THE INDICATOR TIP WHILE OPERATING IS DANGEROUS TO LIFE!

When checking phasing, the thumb touches a special metal terminal at the end of the device handle, or a button in an electronic indicator, and the tip of the indicator touches the wire being tested. If it is phase, the light flashes or the corresponding symbol appears on the display. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO HOLD THE WIRE WITH THE OTHER HAND EVEN BY THE INSULATION! The indicator can be used with ONLY ONE - THE RIGHT - HAND!

Before checking, turn out/turn off BOTH plugs. Then they expose the ends of the wires protruding from the ceiling for the chandelier, move the ends apart, turn on the plugs, and turn on the switch. Place a stool on a rubber mat, and from it, right hand, the indicator finds a phase wire or two phase wires if the chandelier switch is double. Then turn off the switch without touching the plugs, and check the phasing again. Now the indicator should not light up when you touch any of the wires.

If a phase remains somewhere, the switch must be switched into a phase break, and the neutral wire, if the switch is unipolar, must be connected directly. This work is not difficult, and there is no need to pick at the wall. But, if you are not an electrician, then you need to invite a specialist to do it. No jokes with electricity are in vain.

Search for wiring

Before drilling holes in the ceiling for fasteners, you need to determine where the wiring is located so as not to interrupt it when drilling. To be reliable, the wiring search must be done under load, i.e. under current. Load the wiring as follows:

  • Turn off the traffic jams and the chandelier switch.
  • Wires protruding from the ceiling are temporarily extended to the floor; joints are insulated with electrical tape.
  • Instead of chandelier sections, sockets for incandescent lamps are also temporarily connected.
  • Screw light bulbs into the sockets of at least 60 W, and better - 100-150 W.
  • Includes plugs and switch; You can start looking for wiring.

It is best to search for wiring using an electronic indicator; The neon indicator only works in direct contact with live parts. There are special devices - wiring finders, but they are more expensive, and the accuracy is no more than two thicknesses of plaster. If the wiring is also hidden in grooves, then the error will be about 5 cm, which is not enough. The indicator gives an accuracy of 1-2 cm at any depth.

The indicator is led, placing a finger on the button, along the ceiling perpendicular to the intended direction of the wiring. When the phase icon appears on the display, make a mark with a pencil and move on. If the icon disappears, make a second mark.

Then they pass the same place in the opposite direction; you will get two pairs of marks. The wiring lies in the middle between the internal ones. Then they move 15-20 cm along the wiring and repeat the search until the end of the working area.

Installation of the chandelier on standard mounts

Installation of a chandelier on standard mounts comes down to routing the power wires to the sections of light bulbs. When checking the phasing of the wiring, the neutral wire must be immediately marked somehow, at least by bending it close to the ceiling with the tip of the indicator. Then the plugs are turned out/turned off and the wires are inserted into the chandelier.

In modern electrical appliances, the neutral wire is always yellow with a longitudinal green stripe, and all wires are pre-wired into a connector - a terminal block. The neutral wire of the wiring is connected first: insert it into the neutral terminal and tighten the screw. Then the phase wires are connected. Pull the cap into place - the work is finished.

What if the wiring in the room consists of two wires? Or a grandfather’s chandelier, or an antique one, and you can’t see where the phase is and where the zero is?

In the first case, a small piece of wire of the same cross-section (see figure) is added to the phase wire (THE PLUGS - TURNED OFF!) and both sections of the light bulbs are switched on to one phase. The entire chandelier will be turned on with one switch.

Chandelier dial

If the wires in the chandelier are not marked, and there is no terminal block, then the chandelier needs to be ringed. This is done with a regular tester. CALLING A CHANDELIER A CONTROL BULB FROM A 220 V NETWORK IS DANGEROUS TO LIFE!

To check the ringing, we screw in the IDENTICAL sockets into all chandelier sockets, i.e. same power and brand, incandescent lamps; better low-power ones, 15-25 W. Economy bulbs are no good; dialing them won't do anything.

The chandelier diagram is shown in the figure. From it, a person familiar with electrical engineering or at least not forgetting Ohm’s law from school can see that if the resistance of one light bulb is equal to R, then between zero and ФI there will be R; between zero and FII - 0.5R, and between phases - 1.5R. To ring three wires in pairs, six measurements are needed.

"Special" chandeliers

IN Lately Chandeliers have appeared on sale, equipped with a remote control for adjusting the light, a fan, an air ionizer, or even an air conditioner (more precisely, its evaporation unit). When purchasing such products, you must adhere to the following rules:

  • Immediately see how it connects. If, in addition to the usual terminal block for household wiring, there are some strange ends sticking out there, ask for instructions and read them.
  • If the instructions do not clear how to hang such a chandelier yourself, ask whether installation is included in the price of the product, and what the seller’s guarantees are.
  • If a retail outlet operates on the “sell and forget” principle, it’s better to look for the same thing elsewhere.

Chandeliers with additional functions– the products are quite specific; There are few companies or craftsmen involved in their installation, and “special” chandeliers are not cheap.

Emergency situations

How to properly hang a chandelier on the ceiling if there is no standard mount, or it is impossible to use it? To do this, you will have to stock up on tools for working on concrete, stone, wood, drywall, and work.

Low ceiling

The standard option is a chandelier-shade and fastening with a cross bar. What to do if the room is low, but you still don’t want to install a lampshade? In this case, you can gain 10-15 cm by hanging a chandelier with a rod on the ceiling without a hook.

To do this, the standard mounting strip is straightened, cut so that it is hidden under the cap, and new holes are drilled in it for self-tapping screws. Next, the chandelier needs to be slightly modified:

  • The shades and, if possible, all fragile parts are removed from the chandelier. It is better, if the design allows, to remove the rod immediately.
  • The chandelier wires are removed from the terminal block.
  • In the rod, immediately behind the thread, three holes of 4-5 mm are drilled in a row along the rod. You just need to make sure that they all end up under the hood.
  • Three pieces of fishing line are passed into the holes of the removed rod. Their ends are attached to the ends of the chandelier wires and tightly wrapped with narrow tape.
  • Place the rod in place, carefully sliding it over the wires and pulling up the pieces of fishing line until the ends of the wires come out of the holes. If one gets caught, it is corrected with a wire hook or tweezers.
  • If the rod is not removable, then pieces of fishing line are inserted into the holes one by one, starting from the bottom, and the wires are also brought out into them.
  • The wires are reinserted into the terminal block.

The purpose of this modification is to bring the wires out to the side so that they are not pressed against the ceiling and crushed by the edge of the rod. Attention: if the rod is fixed or shaped, the cap must remain on it. Otherwise, he won’t be able to get dressed later because of the wires sticking out to the side.

Next, a mounting strip is installed on the rod between two standard nuts, and the chandelier is attached to the ceiling with self-tapping screws. Most likely, nuts will not be needed: in most chandeliers, the strip is attached to the rod by flaring.

Connect the wires. It may turn out that the terminal block now does not fit in the cap - no big deal, it is completely removed and the wires are connected by soldering; joints are insulated with electrical tape. It is not recommended to connect the wires by twisting: later there will be problems with the flashing chandelier.

Now we mount the chandelier to the ceiling using self-tapping screws. We do not wrap the screws tightly into the sleeves, otherwise the chandelier will become askew.

Option for weak but dense ceilings: laminate, MDF, plywood. Instead of a mounting strip, we make a circle with a diameter 5 mm smaller than the inner diameter of the cap. In the center there is a hole for the rod; in a circle - 4-6 holes for self-tapping screws. You will also need to make a hole for the wires.

If you need a hook

Attaching a chandelier to a concrete ceiling on a strip or I-beam does not raise any questions. What if the chandelier you like has a hook, but you don’t have one at home? With a little work, you can install a very reliable hook yourself:

  • If you use a hook-screw, then drill a hole with a diameter of 10 mm in the ceiling larger diameter screw, and depth - along the thread length + 10 mm.
  • Lubricate the hook thread with a thin layer of grease.
  • We tightly screw two copper wires with a diameter of 0.8 - 1.2 mm onto the screw threads. At the beginning and end of the thread, leave a 10 mm mustache and spread it 90 degrees. When viewed from the end of the screw, the whiskers should diverge perpendicularly in four directions.
  • We spray the hole inside with a spray bottle, or with a stick we put a generously moistened cloth into it, hold it for 1-2 minutes and take it out.
  • Prepare 50-100 g of alabaster or gypsum mortar; This is convenient to do with a disposable plastic cup. When mixed with water, the solution heats up. Mix until creamy consistency.
  • Using a stick (not a spatula) as quickly as possible (alabaster and plaster harden quickly), we pour the solution into the hole until it is full.
  • Just as quickly, into the still liquid solution, we push the hook with the wire wound around the thread; the wire mustache will bend.
  • We remove the squeezed out solution and wait for it to harden in the hole. The solution should not only harden, but also cool to room temperature. This requires at least 2 hours, but it is better to wait a day. Now the chandelier can be hung.

If the hook has a support platform for fastening with self-tapping screws, we make the sockets for them in the same way, but use thinner wire - 0.4-0.6 mm. And you will have to mix a separate portion of the solution for each nest - it very quickly hardens to a mushy state.

Such nests serve for centuries without drying out like plastic. When you turn the hook in/out 2-3 times, the nest does not become loose. If necessary, it can be easily cleared of filling with a narrow chisel and remade. When repairing a plaster-alabaster nest, you can plaster it, and then dig a hole in the plaster for the hook.

Chandelier in a suspended ceiling

Installing a chandelier on a suspended ceiling is the most difficult case. First of all: a chandelier with incandescent lamps and a suspended ceiling are incompatible. Even from a three-arm chandelier with 40 W lamps, spots will appear on the ceiling in a month, and within 3 months it will begin to creep. Economy bulbs in chandeliers recessed into the ceiling quickly burn out due to poor heat exchange; The only option here is LED lamps.

Then, installing a chandelier in an existing suspended ceiling is impossible: it will have to be removed and a new one installed. Trying to cut holes in already stretched ceiling It’s useless - the film or fabric will immediately fall apart.

And finally, before calling a ceiling craftsman, you need to prepare the chandelier mount. The standard chandelier mount is not designed for installation in suspended ceilings, therefore, if the chandelier is hung on a hook, it must be installed in the ceiling in advance.

To attach to planks or I-beams on the base ceiling, you need to attach a cushion made of waterproof BS plywood or MDF, at least 16 mm thick, to the brackets, as shown in the figure. A wooden or ordinary plywood cushion in the inter-ceiling space will soon dry out, and this will end in an accident.

Based on the installed pillow, the ceiling makers will take measurements and make holes in the panel, framed with grommets. Through them, the chandelier will be attached to the pillow with long fasteners, with a gap to the “game” of the ceiling. The wide holes are additionally supported by “spider” supports, but this is a subject for another discussion.

If you plan to recess the chandelier into a suspended ceiling, then it should hang in place during measurement. But still, a chandelier in a suspended ceiling is not the best option according to expenses. Only due to the uneven distribution of the load due to the presence of holes, such a ceiling is more likely to sag and lose its appearance than a solid one.

Chandelier on a plasterboard ceiling

Attaching a chandelier to a plasterboard ceiling is also not easy, but it is still easier than in a room in suspended ceiling. There are three possible cases here:

  • The chandelier weighs up to 3 kg and is attached to a hook. In this case, you need a special butterfly hook. It consists of a specially designed plastic clip and a screw hook. A hole is drilled in the drywall under the butterfly clip, and the hook is screwed into the clip one or two turns. Then the clip is inserted all the way into the hole and the hook is turned until it stops. The inside of the butterfly unfolds into petals, which secure the hook.
  • Chandelier – up to 7 kg weight. In this case, only mounting on slats (cantilever) is permissible. A butterfly dowel is used for each attachment point; simply - a mole. In design, it is similar to the clip of a butterfly hook, and when a self-tapping screw is screwed into it, it opens to the sides inside the inter-ceiling space in the same way.
  • Heavy chandelier. To hang it on a hook you will need one collet pin with a diameter of at least 12 mm; for mounting on a strip - at least two 8-10 mm each. To install a collet pin in the base ceiling, holes are drilled through the plasterboard along the diameter of the pin sleeve and the depth of its length. The pin is screwed a little into the sleeve, inserted through the hole in the drywall into the base ceiling until it stops, and again the pin is screwed in until it stops. The collet diverges and wedges itself in the base ceiling, and a threaded end remains on the outside, onto which you can screw a hook with a threaded socket, or several ends - on them you can put a pillow under the chandelier bracket.

Note: hanging a chandelier on a hook through drywall is unreliable - the collet is held in the ceiling by friction. Therefore, for hanging from a plasterboard ceiling, it is better to choose chandeliers with cantilever mounting.

How to remove chandeliers

How to remove a chandelier from the ceiling, if necessary? All described fastening methods allow dismantling in the reverse order of installation.

In the first place, again, safety precautions: turn off the switch, turn off or unscrew the plugs. Then we remove all fragile parts from the chandelier: crystal pendants, etc. Next, we disconnect the wires, insulate their bare ends, and only after that we proceed to disassemble the mount.

With a suspended suspended or plasterboard ceiling, we remove only the chandelier itself. We do not touch pillows, butterflies, collets and other auxiliary parts. This is especially true for collets and butterflies: these are disposable parts and are not designed for re-installation.

A chandelier is not just ordinary lighting fixture, which is an attribute of any interior. It also serves as an additional decorative element. Fashion does not stand still; to please it, it is often necessary to change the chandelier when renovating or changing the furnishings. However, it is not necessary to resort to the help of strangers; you can hang the lamp from the ceiling yourself, the main thing is to follow the work algorithm.
And even if you never have the chance to attach a lamp to the ceiling yourself, it wouldn’t hurt to at least just know how to do it correctly in order to be able to control the work of hired workers. Therefore, let's figure out how to hang a chandelier so that it is reliable and safe.

Basics

Initially, the installation of a chandelier begins with an inspection of the existing mounting system.
Based on the type of fastening, there are three types of suspension - they are used most often (this means specifically for chandeliers).

  • fastening on powerful hooks mounted in the ceiling.
  • suspension on a mounting plate.
  • installation on an extended platform

Installing the mount

The first option is most suitable for massive lamps that have a leg or are suspended on a chain (or wire) of different lengths. The hook is able to withstand constant, significant loads. Previously, it was always built in by default - even at the stage of laying floor slabs. Today builders do not always do this.
Modern lamp models are made, as a rule, from lightweight materials, and it is not at all necessary to make powerful fasteners for them. In addition, the hook is usually located clearly in the center of the room, and designers often shift the visual center or zone the space using lighting. And then what to do with the ugly hook firmly built into the ceiling?
Therefore, in new-style buildings, new residents plan the location of the chandelier at their own discretion, shifting it in the desired direction. To hang the lamp, a simple and reliable fastening strip is used (shown in the second photo), which successfully copes with small loads. This mounting option allows you to use flat lamp models, which, as planned, should fit closely to the ceiling. Such systems can be mounted on suspended ceiling structures.
The latter type is used on hollow stretch and plasterboard ceilings. These materials themselves are not strong and stable, so the holder (in the form of a wooden block, for example) is attached directly to concrete floor. And then the lamp is suspended from it, flush with the suspended surface.
The holding profiles must be strictly parallel so that there is no increased load on any one side. The only exception is a significant difference in the ceiling planes, when it is necessary to level the platform using hangers of different heights.

Work safety

When working, you need to remember three main rules: adhere to basic safety precautions, observe polarity when connecting wires and use reliable fastening. These instructions, like three pillars, must be strictly observed.
In addition, in order to correctly (and without health consequences) install the ceiling lamp, remember the recommendations given below.

The most important thing is to ensure absolute safety of work. This means that the lamp needs to be replaced during the day in order to be able to completely de-energize the apartment throughout the entire installation period.

Even if the circuit is de-energized, still be sure to check it with a special tester screwdriver with a built-in light bulb. Sometimes residual stress can hit very hard.

Always de-energize and test the lighting circuit when hanging fixtures from the ceiling. Attaching chandeliers is work at height, so even a slight electric shock is enough to cause more serious injury if you fall from a stepladder.

New chandelier and old wiring

You need to be especially careful if your wiring is old and made of aluminum wire. Ideally, it would be completely replaced with copper, with a larger cross-section. This is absolutely justified, since previously much lower rated loads were placed on the circuit. Therefore, it would be right to expand it throughput. If it is not possible to change the wiring, then protect yourself as much as possible by following our recommendations.
Remember - under no circumstances directly connect the copper wires of the chandelier to a thick cable. aluminum wiring. When the two substances come into close contact, they react, resulting in corrosion. real threat short circuit, and, as a result, a fire.
Therefore, apply insulating solder to copper wires, and only then screw them to aluminum ones. All three wires are processed in this way; to be sure, additionally solder all connections (especially if the chandelier is installed in wet rooms, such as a bathroom). It’s better to use special clamp terminals that provide safe and reliable connection. There are a lot of models and the cost is quite small.
Don’t be lazy to ground both the lamp itself and the switch. This will minimize the risk of electric shock if your neighbors suddenly flood you.

Let's look at the features of installation in rooms with different starting conditions in order to carry out installation correctly. Here are three main types of ceilings: concrete, suspended and plasterboard.

Concrete ceilings

Chandelier hook

The most common option for mounting chandeliers on concrete surfaces- ordinary hooks. If you don’t have a hook, or after a long time it has become unreliable, it’s better to play it safe and change it, strengthening the structure properly.
To do this, you will have to re-embroider the seams between the plates, going a little to the sides. A strong metal plate (or pin) is inserted into the resulting opening - it is much easier to do this if the ceilings are hollow. For wet areas It wouldn’t hurt to treat the plate with any enamel paint, then it will be less susceptible to corrosion.

Then the hook itself clings to the plate. In the end it turns out reliable system, capable of withstanding heavy loads.
Durable concrete base allows you to use the other two methods of fastening, if suddenly there is a need for it.

Stretch ceiling

Many inexperienced craftsmen often have a question: how to hang a chandelier on a tension surface (canvas or PVC film)?
In fact, if you have a suspended ceiling installed in your room, you can attach the chandelier using the method described above. With the only amendment that you need to hang the lamp away from the canvas so that the hot lamps do not touch the surface with the bulbs. However, most often installers resort to the third type of fastening - with platform extension.
In order to attach the chandelier flush with the canvas, you will need to make a strong frame. It could be simple wooden block, installed flush with the film surface. The mounting plate is screwed onto it with self-tapping screws. The fastening of all base elements must be rigid so that vibrations of the tension film do not cause the lamp to wobble.

Chandelier mount

In addition, special gaskets are installed on both sides of the tension film, which strengthen the perforation site. They prevent the fabric from stretching under its own weight, and also act as a thermal insulating layer that protects the fabric from heat. They look like rings. The one that needs to be mounted outside is usually transparent, and it is not at all visible behind the decorative overlay of the chandelier.

Preparing a stretch ceiling

The wires also need to be well insulated at the connections. It’s better to use special clamping terminals that efficiently connect and seal the joints.

Plasterboard ceilings

You can attach a chandelier to a plasterboard ceiling using the same technology as on a suspended ceiling. The second type of fastening is also used - if you plan to install a heavy chandelier. Then a suitable size block is used. It is attached to the ceiling using a special collet pin. It allows you to significantly enhance the potential of the design.

Drywall fastening

A mounting strip is screwed to the base, and you can safely attach almost any chandelier to it.

Low ceilings and other nuances

Usually than bigger room, those large sizes pendant lamps can be installed. But they weigh a lot, and actually represent real danger for residents - in case of unexpected breakage of fastenings and falls.
Depending on the type of chandeliers, there are some mounting features. For example, traditional hooks are not suitable for hanging flat lamp models that do not have a rod. Therefore, if you low ceilings, and you want to smooth out this drawback with a flat lamp, you will have to redo the mounting base. Replace the massive hook with a flat bar. If the chandelier is small and light, it is enough to mount it on aluminum ceiling pendants.
A massive and heavy chandelier must be hung on a thick steel hook, deeply “embedded” in the ceiling. Today you can buy a special, very easy-to-use and practical hook. It is equipped with spacer bars that open during installation - like the wings of a butterfly, and do not allow the mount to dangle and fall out.
After installing such a hook, the hole surrounding it must be primed and cemented. Wait at least 24 hours for the mixture to set. As a result, such a mount will be able to withstand even a heavy chandelier.

Chandelier mount

Please note that the wiring is not attached to the hook. A special chandelier holder is hung on it, and the cables are placed freely, without tension, next to or around.

Scheme

Another important point in installing a ceiling light is to connect the wires correctly. Typically, lighting systems use three wires: phase, ground and neutral.
It’s great if they differ in the color of the insulation - then you don’t have to guess which is which.
The “phase” insulation has brown (or black) color; grounding can be identified by the yellow braid, and “zero” is usually blue. IN quality models chandelier wires are always marked different colors
, so that there is no need to “ring” where the phase is and where the zero is. Then your task comes down to connecting the wiring to the lamp cables - by color.

If all three cables look the same, you will have to empirically determine where the “phase” is located. It can be identified by applying an indicator screwdriver to each wire in turn. When the light comes on, this cable is the “phase”. Although this popular method is far from safe, it is better to use a special tester. To avoid confusion, mark the cables with a multi-colored marker or electrical tape.

When it is planned to install a lamp with the simplest control, a single-key switch is sufficient. The lighting circuit assembly diagram is as follows:

Single switch

If you want to be able to turn on each lamp individually (or all together), install a two-key switch. Then the connection diagram will look like this (for example, a chandelier with three light bulbs is taken).

Double switch
By analogy, a switch with three keys is installed.
Before twisting (or terminal connection), strip 3-4 cm of insulation from the wire. Do this carefully so as not to damage individual wiring. It is better to use a special insulation stripping tool for this.

Now you can connect the lamp; it will be correct to first connect the “zero” ones and then the “phase” ones. If you have three wires in the circuit (i.e., additional grounding is laid), then the corresponding cables with yellow insulation are also simply connected in pairs. Dealing with concrete ceiling , many people prefer to turn to specialists so that they can quickly hang a chandelier for them for a fee. Stops people like this bolts and fasteners, as well as the need to screw in hooks and connect all these elements to each other. But in fact, there is nothing complicated about attaching a chandelier to the ceiling, and everyone can do it on their own!

Before starting work, you need to get all necessary tool. There is nothing specific in this set, and all appliances can be found in every home.

List of tools required for work:

  1. Screwdriver;
  2. Drill or hammer drill;
  3. Key for twelve;
  4. Screwdriver with indicator;
  5. Fasteners;
  6. Pliers;
  7. Terminal block;

You will need a key for twelve when assembling the chandelier itself. And with the help of an indicator screwdriver you will determine the place where you need to connect the wires. A standard screwdriver and pliers will be needed when attaching the chandelier, and a terminal block when separating the wires.

By the way, light bulbs blinking when the power is turned off is a problem of incorrectly separated wires.

How to remove a chandelier from the ceiling

However, if you are making repairs and not equipping new apartment then, most likely, the first thing you will encounter is an old chandelier that needs to be replaced.

An old chandelier can be removed from the ceiling in several stages:

  1. Turn off the electricity in the house;
  2. Prepare terminal blocks, electrical tape and an indicator screwdriver;
  3. If the lamp has additional elements(bugle beads, lampshades), then try to remove them in advance.
  4. Unscrew the cap behind which the chandelier mount is hidden;
  5. Now you have a fastening in front of you: either a bar or a hook.
  6. Disconnect the wires by spreading them apart;
  7. Wrap exposed wires with electrical tape.

After this, you can remove the chandelier itself and prepare to install a new one. As you can see, there is nothing complicated here, and you can handle everything yourself.

If your chandelier is mounted on a strip, you may not be able to separate the wires right away. In this case, you need to loosen the bolts a little using a screwdriver.

Mount for chandelier to ceiling

As we mentioned above, chandelier mounts come in different types. And if removing a chandelier from them is an almost equally simple task, then installing them, on the contrary, can be very different.

There are two main types of mounting chandeliers on the ceiling:

  1. Hook;
  2. Plank (bracket).

The hook-shaped mount has been used since the time of the very first chandeliers, and on the Soviet market it was generally the only chandelier mount. This is why owners, when buying a new chandelier, are surprised that there is no hook and it is unclear how to attach the chandelier.

If your kit did not include a hook, then check that there should be a mounting strip somewhere. Fastening using such a strip (also called a bracket) is modern and is considered more reliable in operation.

However, the hook has not gone out of use, and many domestic companies still produce chandeliers only with hook mounts.

Attaching the chandelier to the ceiling with a hook

This method of fastening is considered more complex than fastening to a bar. And you should be careful: if the chandelier is not secured firmly enough, it can fall to the floor and break at any moment.

In addition, hook fastening is divided into two types:

  1. With standard thread;
  2. With anchor bolt.

The first version of the hook is suitable only for small-sized chandeliers whose weight does not exceed three kilograms, otherwise the mount may not withstand the load and the chandelier will fall.

If your chandelier is heavy, weighing four or more kilograms, it should come with a special anchor bolt that can withstand much more weight.

If you have a large chandelier, and they went to it anchor bolts, then installation will be a little more difficult. You also need to drill a hole in the ceiling, and then screw in the anchor bolt until it stops, onto which the chandelier is hung.

Please note that the anchor bolt must be inserted all the way, only then is there a guarantee that the structure will not fall to the floor one day!

How to attach a chandelier to the ceiling without a hook

If you did not find a hook with the chandelier, it means it is attached using a special mounting strip. Such a strip can be easily purchased at any hardware store. The price will not surprise you, since such devices cost very little.

If you replace a chandelier with a new one, then the old one will leave a hook in the ceiling. Be sure to remove it before installing the strip.

Attaching the chandelier strip to the ceiling

After you have removed the hook from the old chandelier, you need to proceed to installing the metal strip.

You can set the bar in several steps:

  1. Drill two holes in the ceiling;
  2. Drive dowels into the holes;
  3. Insert self-tapping screws into the strip and screw them into the dowels;

After this, the metal strip is completely fixed to the ceiling, but further work Installing a chandelier may require an assistant, since if you are installing a chandelier for the first time, you may not be able to do it alone.

Don't neglect using quality dowels. Thanks to them, the fastening becomes stronger, which means greater safety in the room.

How to hang a chandelier from the ceiling

After you have secured the hook or strip to the ceiling, figured out the structure of your chandelier, perhaps even watched an instructional video, it’s time to move on to installation.

As we noted above, it is best to find an assistant who, during installation, will hold the chandelier in his hands at a convenient distance for you, and then help move it to the wiring.

While the assistant is holding the chandelier, you need to:

  1. Connect the chandelier wires to the wiring;
  2. Install the protective cap;
  3. Securely secure the cap with a screwdriver.

Installing a chandelier on the ceiling with your own hands (video)

As you can see, installing a chandelier to the ceiling with your own hands is a simple process, but it may require special tools and outside help. The main thing is to follow safety precautions and install all fastenings as firmly as possible.

Hello, dear readers and site visitors.

After purchasing a chandelier, the question always arises of how to install it. In this article I will tell you how to hang a lamp or chandelier without calling specialists.

There is nothing complicated about this and you can easily do it on your own. But some subtleties and nuances need to be mentioned.

There are several ways to mount and install a chandelier in the ceiling:

  • on a metal hook
  • on a bracket or bar
  • directly to the surface

Let's look at each fastening method in more detail.

Installing a chandelier using a hook

This is the simplest and convenient way chandelier mountings. We hang it on a metal hook pre-installed on the ceiling. My example shows an old-style metal hook that was installed during the construction of the house.

1. How to hang a light chandelier

If the chandelier is not heavy and weighs up to 3-4 (kg), then you can use a metal hook like this with a thread.

Using a hammer drill, we drill a hole in the ceiling, insert a plastic dowel into it and screw in the hook. The chandelier mount is ready.

Also, using a threaded metal hook, you can install the chandelier in a ceiling with wooden floor. The hook just needs to be screwed in wooden base ceiling.

I would like to draw your attention to the following. Installing a hook in a plasterboard ceiling is prohibited. In this case, the metal hook must be attached to concrete base ceiling.

2. How to hang a heavy chandelier

If the chandelier is heavy and weighs more than 5 (kg), then it is better to use special anchor bolts with a diameter of 10 sq. mm. with spacer hook.

Drill a hole in the ceiling of the required diameter. After that, insert the anchor into it and tighten it until it stops. This chandelier mount is very reliable.

Chandeliers that are designed to be installed on a hook have a special decorative cup.

The cup moves freely in height and is fixed in the upper position to hide places.

Installation of a chandelier using a bracket (bar)

Now we will look at how to install a chandelier without a metal hook. I consider this method of fastening somewhat more complicated than the previous one, but not so complicated as to resort to paid services specialists.

Included with the purchased chandelier is a special metal bracket or strip. We install 2 screws into this bracket or bar, adjusting the distance between them, and then tighten them with nuts. After this, we attach the bracket to the ceiling using a hammer drill and two dowel nails.

Previously, a chandelier on a metal hook was installed in this place. Purchased new chandelier It is attached using a bracket, so I bent the hook towards the ceiling, which you can see in the photo. You can even cut off the hook, but in this position it doesn’t bother me at all.

Tighten the two fastening decorative nuts.

The chandelier is installed and ready for use.

I won’t dwell on this now, because... this is the topic of a separate article. Read in upcoming issues.
