Planting and growing

Petunia grandiflora does not require any special knowledge on planting, growing and caring. Enough compliance general rules. The main thing is to observe the terms of sowing seeds, top dressing, transplanting into the ground.

Sowing seeds

The cultivation of petunia begins with the sowing of seeds, which is carried out on the 20th of March. They sow thickly, as it is likely that seedlings will be much less than expected. Land for sowing should be light, loose, moisture-intensive and fertile. It is good to add various mineral and nutrients to the planting soil, which will help accelerate the growth and development of seedlings. The planting field is watered abundantly. The seeds are mixed with sand and sprinkled on the ground, trying to maintain a distance of 1 cm. The surface with crops is covered with a film and placed in a bright place. Contain crops at a temperature of 20-25 degrees. After 7 days, you can see the first shoots, they should be carefully monitored - spray and ventilate every day.

Moreover, the first shoots should be sprayed not with ordinary water, but with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. As soon as the seedlings have the first leaf, you can remove the film, and pour a little sand into the container from above.

Growing seedlings

When the petunia seedlings grow up so that they can be held with your fingers, they begin to pick seedlings. Moisten the soil before picking. Seedlings are carefully removed from the ground by the leaves and moved to separate pots with the same soil. Water carefully so that the soil settles. Then, the plants should be well watered and covered for 3 days with plain paper. So that the plants do not stretch, they are placed in a cooler place, and after a month they are taken out to a glazed balcony, veranda or greenhouse. Plants and soil conditions should be carefully monitored. Seedlings should be fed with special fertilizers. Varieties with strong shoot growth need pinching. When the plants reach 5-7 cm, for better tillering, shoots are pinched over 4-5 leaves.

In early June, seedlings are ready for planting in a balcony box or flower bed.

You need to know that when planting a large-flowered petunia, the distance between the bushes should be approximately one step in the open field and a little less when planting in containers.

The plant must be placed in a cool room. In the middle of winter, you should put the plant on the windowsill, monitor the humidity, and fertilize.

  • Water the petunias about once a week, moistening the soil to a depth of about 10-15 centimeters. Petunias that are grown on balconies need watering much more often, depending on the drying of the soil;
  • Good effect on appearance, growth and flowering petunias fertilizer. Feed every two weeks;
  • Remove rain-beaten or withered buds in a timely manner. This contributes to the rapid recovery and re-flowering of the plant.

Diseases and pests

Petunia, like other plants, is susceptible to disease if not observed. certain rules care. The most common diseases include:

  • Wet rot, which is a root collar rot, this can occur due to planting too deep or due to abundant watering of the soil;
  • Brown spot - manifested by the appearance on the leaves rusty spots due to mechanical impact or too high humidity;
  • Late blight - occurs with high humidity, poor ventilation and thickening of plantings, in which the base of the plant rots and turns brown.

It is very hardy, tolerates weather changes with dignity, but at the same time suffers from heavy precipitation that injures the buds. But this is unlikely to become an obstacle in creating a bright flowering garden.

Large-flowered petunia is a very beautiful and beautiful plant that can become the pride of any gardener.

Video: petunias - varieties and care

Petunia is great for growing, and as garden plant, and as indoor flower. Ease of care, a wide range of colors, a huge selection of shapes make it possible to widely use different kinds petunias for organizing planters and flowerpots, borders and flower beds. Therefore, she is a frequent guest both in city flower beds and in summer cottages.

Types and varieties of petunias. Description and photo

Petunia has a rather complicated classification, which is explained by a long selection work. To date, there are approximately 70 varieties of this plant.

The new charcoal, blueberry, sour-green colors of the varieties will impress even the most sophisticated gardener. But for a beginner, who, as a rule, relies only on a photo, it can be difficult to understand all the varietal diversity of these plants.

When choosing a particular variety, it is necessary to take into account the growth conditions of the flower. Since the best specimens for hanging planters are absolutely not suitable for decorating paths or open land, and plants wrapping around terraces will be absolutely inappropriate in organizing flower beds. You can rely on reviews and numerous photos, but it’s more correct to understand for yourself what is the difference between an ampel variety and a cascade variety, and a floribunda from a bush type.

Bush varieties

This group is quite diverse and numerous. Here are both the most compact plants with a complex flower subgroup Multiflora with a flower diameter of up to 5 centimeters, and quite large representatives of the Grandiflora subgroup - larger than 16 centimeters.

Long-term bush varieties are characterized by lush hats of inflorescences. Ideal for decorating rabatok, growing on borders and flower beds. Compact varieties are planted in containers.

The name of this subspecies is self-explanatory - the plant has the shape of a bush. For which it is not necessary to carry out special work on the formation, but when you pinch the top, new branches will appear, they will make the bush much more magnificent and sprawling.

Among bush plants, the most common hybrids are: Drimm, Fantasia, Hit Parade, Titan. Connoisseurs of early flowering plants will love the series Polaris and Ultra. And those who are afraid for the fragile appearance of plants will be pleased with Storm petunias, they have high resistance to bad weather.

floribunda

Varieties of this type of petunia in terms of flower diameter are in the middle position between specimens of the Grandiflora and Multiflora groups. Any varietal group has its pros and cons. Celebrity has 14 hybrids in its subgroup, which are characterized by increased resistance to negative weather conditions, they tolerate dry days and heavy rainfall.

Floribunda, as a rule, is used for large-scale plantings. The most popular for these purposes are 12 hybrids of the Sonya subgroup. Among which, Sonya Orchid, its leaves have contrasting veins of different colors.

Cascading varieties

These varieties of petunias are planted in large containers, as they have the ability to grow significantly in breadth. Them distinctive feature are long side branches, and therefore more than three plants can rarely be placed in one container. This feature I found myself in the design of gazebos, loggias, terraces.

The following types of petunias Silver, Rose, Typhoon, Ramplin and Cherry are very popular. These varieties, without various pinches and tricks, can throw whips up to 1.5 meters.

This variety of petunias forms elongated falling branches. These varieties of plants are ideal for hanging planters. At the same time, gardeners successfully grow these varieties in flower beds. Branches creeping along the surface create beautiful and original carpets of flowers.

Among these varieties of petunias, saturation and great choice flowers different variety Sufrinia. Among other things, this petunia is valued by gardeners due to its resistance to bad weather, fast germination and early flowering. Also common types of petunias are Lilac and Pearl surf, Waterfall and Wave of luck.

Calibrachoa

This group of plants is outwardly very similar to petunia, and for quite a long time was considered one of its species. In addition to the distinctive number of chromosomes, Calibrachoa has significant morphological differences:

  • leaves and inflorescences are much smaller;
  • the stem of this plant becomes more woody and branches more;
  • even framing of the petals;
  • greens have short elastic hairs.

New Calibrachoa hybrids have gained great popularity among gardeners. Millionbells has been the winner of international competitions more than once. Also noteworthy are the varieties Noah, Cabaret, Superbells.

Description and differences of the cascade variety

Among characteristic features cascade varieties are distinguished:

  • the ability to build long branches;
  • thick and elastic branches;
  • inflorescences of medium diameter;
  • branch growth is directed upwards and sideways.

This variety of petunia is best planted in a pot. It is undesirable to plant more than one bush in a pot with a capacity of up to 6 liters. In a large container with a volume of 11-15 liters, several petunias can take root.

Cascading varieties of petunias can grow significantly. shoots at the beginning active growth tend to go up. But after a while, as they grow older, the elastic stem under its mass begins to sag, creating strong thickets, with many flowers.

Growing a cascade variety

This type of petunia is propagated using seeds. Landing is carried out from March to May. The soil mixture for planting is very easy to do with your own hands. For what you will need sifted sand, sod land, peat and humus. All these elements must be added in equal parts. A layer of expanded clay is laid out at the bottom of the container. The landing is made according to the following scheme:

The first 14 days, the seeds need to be watered every day. A few drops of potassium permanganate can be added to the water to activate growth and prevent the disease. As soon as shoots appear, they must be hardened and aired. Why is the container with crops put on open air and remove cover material. Seedlings dive into separate peat cups when the first leaf appears.

As you grow older seedlings need bait:

  • the first is added after 3 weeks from the date of the pick. best choice for these purposes are complex water-soluble top dressings with a small amount of nitrogen;
  • The next prikormku do through 14 days. What are organic fertilizers used for?

Landing in the ground is carried out in well-heated soil at the end of May. Cultivation is better obtained in open, well-lit places. Care consists in watering and loosening the soil. During flowering, it is advisable to add bait once a week.

The most common types of cascade varieties

Among the many hybrids identify a number of varieties, constantly maintaining leadership among gardeners in popularity:

  • Ramblin can reach sizes up to 45 centimeters, lets off branches about 1 m long. The earliest type of petunia, has a long flowering time;
  • Gioconda is a highly branching medium-sized plant, densely covered with inflorescences of medium diameter. It is characterized by the ability to adapt to a wide range of temperatures;
  • Double Cascade forms a neat plant covered with large fragrant flowers. Terry leaves have a bright color, highlighted with purple-green petals.

Description and differences of the ampel variety

Ampel species are deservedly one of the most interesting varieties. Their distinguishing feature is elongated hanging branches, which form beautiful garlands of inflorescences. Due to these unique features, this variety of petunia is used for vertical planting - decorating terraces, arbors, loggias. These flowers look pretty elegant when organized. alpine slides. Their shoots, which creep along the ground, cannot but attract prying eyes.

What is the difference between the ampel variety and the cascade variety?

Sometimes questions arise, what is the difference between the ampel variety and the cascade variety? In the cascade variety, the branches grow upwards, while the ampelous variety has a thin falling stem. There are differences in the size of the inflorescences. Cascading varieties have larger forms.

At the same time, select best view impossible, since the plants will also be divided into terry and simple, large-flowered and miniature, one- and two-color, compact, undersized and others.

Bush

Ampel

A perennial petunia of this species forms branches that rush down. From ampelous varieties it is easy to create a picturesque flower curtain, a falling waterfall and other incredibly beautiful figures. Such petunias are usually planted in pots, which are hung on arbors or stunted trees. In addition, they can often be seen in containers and boxes, and sometimes these plants are grown in conditions open ground. In the latter case, ampelous petunias grow with a luxurious flower carpet, which is able to close all the voids in the area.

From this series it is worth highlighting the following varieties petunias:

Cascading

Petunia cascading is quite often used for decorating loggias, arbors and balconies. Plants from this series are famous for their long shoots, which grow very beautifully in different directions. The most popular are the following cascading petunias:

New varieties

Breeders do not get tired of working and delighting flower growers with new varieties of petunias. As a rule, such plants are resistant to heavy rains, scorching sun and gusty winds. Quite a lot of effort is also spent on obtaining new bright colors, and the experience of genetic engineering is often used to achieve positive results.

There are a huge number of petunia varieties, and it is simply impossible to describe each of them in one article. We hope that the list of species and subspecies that was presented to your attention today will allow you to make an informed choice and, finally, grow this incredibly beautiful flower in your own garden or decorate your loggia with it.

In articles about petunias and in descriptions of varieties on seed packages, there are many tricky words. Now it's time to choose seeds for the new season, so let's try to figure out what these words mean and what petunias are.

Although it is necessary to make a reservation right away: there is no unanimity among flower growers - in the literature there are various interpretations the same term, so there may be discrepancies. If you think my short dictionary needs clarification, leave your comments and suggestions in the comments.

Ampelous petunias

This is a garden group that combines varieties and hybrids with flexible, long (from 50 to 150 cm), fast growing shoots. Usually they are distinguished by increased resistance to adverse conditions and abundant, long flowering, but strong wind or rain often damages thin lashes. They recover quickly enough, however, the decorative effect of plants suffers, therefore it is recommended to place ampelous petunias in such a way as to protect them from the vagaries of the weather.

Shoots of ampelous petunias ( Petunia pendula) growing in hanging planters, as a rule, hang down - such plants are suitable for vertical gardening, growing in balcony boxes, etc. But you can also use them for planting in the ground, if you provide them with a sufficient area, which the growing lashes will very quickly occupy, forming an elegant flowering "carpet".

Wide range of you will find ampelous petunias in our catalog, which contains offers from various garden online stores. .

petunias picoti

Initially a series Picotee F1, bred by American breeders, included several hybrids of various colors with an original white border on wavy (corrugated) petals of large flowers.

Distinctive feature petunia picoti - white border around the edge of the petals

Now the word "picotie" often means not a specific series, but a sign - that same white border around the edge.

Petunia superb

Cm. superbrissima.

Petunias floribunda

This group is known by this name. profusely flowering petunias. Some believe that petunia floribunda ( Petunia Floribunda) is the same as petunia multiflora(see above), and use these names as synonyms. Others believe that these are still different groups that have differences from each other.

Petunias floribunda - profusely flowering plants with quite large flowers

Proponents of the second point of view refer to the floribunda group of petunias with simple or double flowers with a diameter of 6-10 cm (which brings them closer to the group grandiflora) and abundant, long flowering (as in petunia multiflora). With the latter, they are also related by good resistance to adverse effects.

Superbrissima

Petunia superb (Petunia superbissima) is a cascade-type plant with large flowers (up to 16 cm in diameter) with a wide mouth and very strongly corrugated petals.

The colors of these petunias are very diverse, but they are all extremely spectacular and are used, as a rule, for front flower beds (including container ones).

Often these petunias are called frilittunia(see below), but these groups are still different in size of flowers, although the shape of their petals is certainly similar.

Supertunia

Supertunia ( Supertunia) is a variety series of ampelous petunias created by the Japanese company Sakata. Plants in this series are very similar to surfinia(see below).

Surfinia

Like supertunia(see above), surfinia is a variety of ampelous petunias with long (up to 2 m) drooping shoots and abundant flowering. Flowers with a diameter of 6-9 cm (there are hybrids with more small flowers- about 5 cm in diameter). Surfinia is recommended to be formed by pinching the stems to form side shoots.

Amateur flower growers should take into account that surfinia are heterotic hybrids, and therefore they are propagated vegetatively (by cuttings). They either do not form seeds at all, or form very few; during seed reproduction, parental traits are not inherited. That is, it will not be possible to save a favorite plant by collecting seeds from it.

fortune

Under this name, petunia hybrids are combined, which, like supertunia(see above), similar to surfinia(see above).

frillitunia

frillitunium ( Frillytunia) are called large-flowered petunias (flowers about 10 cm in diameter) with highly corrugated petals. Essentially, this is the same as fringed petunias(see above).

Frillitunia is a large-flowered petunia with heavily corrugated petals. Photo courtesy of florantino.ru

Freellitunia require careful care: for good flowering, they need stable soil moisture (they react painfully to drought) and timely top dressing. Recommended for planting in places protected from wind and rain (on loggias, verandas, covered terraces, etc.) - frillitunia flowers do not tolerate adverse weather conditions.

A few words about classification

Scientists and flower growers have not yet come to a consensus on how petunias should be classified. They are combined according to different features, and in the description of a particular plant, you can find several characteristics at once. It is customary to divide petunias according to:

bush shape

  • bush
  • ampelous
  • cascading
flower shape
  • simple
  • terry
flower size and bloom pattern
  • large-flowered (grandiflora)
  • small-flowered (milliflora)
  • many-flowered (multiflora)
  • floriferous (floribunda)

That is, a petunia can be at the same time, for example, both large-flowered and terry. Various combinations of features and a rich palette of colors create an extraordinary variety of these wonderful colors.
