If there is a lot of living space, and there is no need to enclose the space, you can beautifully equip a doorway without a door. The absence of a door leaf between rooms is enough practical option expansion of space. This is especially true for small apartments. Also, thanks to this solution, you can arrange pieces of furniture more conveniently. Finishing a doorway without a door is definitely profitable solution. It is worth learning more about the features of its implementation.

Features of doorless openings

This design is equipped in such a way that the door frame is completely eliminated. You also need to choose the size of the opening and its shape. The interior is determined design solutions present in adjacent rooms. If an arched structure is chosen, it is necessary to take into account the height of the ceiling and the location of the load-bearing walls. Photo doorways without doors can be seen below.

Usually the standard decision that is made in such a situation is decorative finishing using the following materials:

  • panel plastic;
  • artificial or natural stone;
  • polyurethane stucco molding.

Curtains and screens can be used as additional decorative elements. Particularly popular are materials that do not lose their characteristics even after long years operation.

Advantages of an open doorway

One of the popular solutions in terms of equipment for openings is the device sliding doors. They do not require much space for installation, so they are often installed in apartments with small dimensions.

Properly designed open openings look quite attractive. They create the effect of combining adjacent rooms. This solution also improves the quality of apartment ventilation. Such openings also look great if they open onto an insulated balcony.

Thanks to the equipment of a doorless space, you can completely compensate for the standard layout. It's worth the money and effort. One of the distinctive features of such openings is the reduction in the cost of materials that will be used to design a doorway without a door.

A doorway (for example, to a kitchen) that is not equipped with a door leaf is an advantageous solution for the interior. The implementation of various finishes, presented in the photo in the article, is original and emphasizes the individuality of the apartment owners. The work can be done with your own hands.

Drywall arches

One of the cheapest options for decorating an opening without a door is to use drywall. Material Features:

  • it can be cut with a regular knife;
  • due to the smooth and even surface of the material, its preparation is carried out in a minimal amount;
  • the reverse side has a fairly high degree of adhesion to various adhesives;
  • The service life of such material is 20 years of continuous operation.

To secure the cladding, you will need to install the frame of the arched structure. It is usually made from a metal profile. A mounting beam can also be used. First, the wall plasterboard is installed, and the facing plasterboard is installed on top.

Using waterproof putty, as well as a special tape, allows you to seal seams much faster. When choosing a material, it is worth considering that acrylic-based compositions have fairly high strength. In contrast, gypsum products can be sanded well. This property is especially important for paint and varnish processing of the arch.

Making an opening using plastic

In the process of designing doorless openings, plastic is often used. The variety of panels allows you to choose from many interesting options. Such products can imitate various textures, including wood and stone.

The plastic decor of an opening without a door is usually selected according to the pattern, as well as color and texture. This allows you to create an interior in which all the details will look as harmonious as possible. At correct selection characteristics of materials can increase the space visually.

There is no need to invite specialists when finishing the opening. If you have certain skills in such work, you can complete the entire process yourself.

Polyurethane stucco

Polyurethane stucco is often used to decorate doorless spaces between adjacent rooms. If the work is carried out in a small apartment, it is better to pay attention to materials that have a low-relief pattern. Volumetric stucco molding is appropriate only if there are high ceilings.

One of the advantages of polyurethane is the ability to paint it with any paint. For this reason, this coating is often used when decorating openings without doors. The material can be easily fixed using special glue.

Stone in finishing of openings

Stone is one of the most attractive and durable materials used... interior decoration premises. It has a high degree of wear resistance and also has an excellent appearance. It is easy to attach with glue.

Artificial stone is inferior to natural stone in terms of service life, but its lightness compensates for this. This type of finish is also inexpensive. The construction market offers many models of artificial stone in different colors.

Stone cladding methods

There are several options for laying stone elements when lining an opening. One of the most common is the method of making edging with smooth edges. This cladding looks neat and stylish. The second option is torn edges. Before you begin installing the tiles, you should level all surfaces of the opening. To increase adhesion, the surface should be primed.

An interesting option is clinker cladding. Such products perfectly imitate ancient masonry with natural stone. Clinker masonry is characterized by increased wear resistance, as well as preservation of the original appearance of the material even after years of use.

How to choose the type of opening

According to designers, arched structures have great potential for increasing the visual appeal of the opening. This makes the premises look more interesting. It is especially worth thinking about making an arched doorless opening in the case of narrow corridor. Thanks to this solution, you can improve not only the interior design, but also increase the convenience of moving around the apartment.

If the apartment has standard ceilings, you can make an arch that has a slight rounding. Typically, the radius of such structures is selected based on the size of the doorway. The radius should be twice the width of the free space under the arch.

Important! Gentle arches visually enlarge the space, raise the ceiling, and can also be combined with many interior styles.

To decorate an opening with a high ceiling, you can use arches of unconventional shapes. For example, they are trapezoidal, elliptical and asymmetrical. If, for example, an arch is erected over the space between the corridor and the living room, you can make it in the form of a structure with slopes that imitate half-columns.

Openings made in Baroque or Empire style look interesting. If the apartment is small, you should not overload the space with small elements. This will visually reduce the space.

Many designers pay more attention to symmetrical designs. If you decorate such an opening with low-relief polyurethane stucco molding, you can get great view. To make an arch, you should understand the rules for working with drywall, and also purchase necessary materials for the frame.

Restrictions

When arranging the opening between rooms, certain operating rules should be taken into account. There are several limitations that require careful attention. For example, block partitions are often installed in apartments, in which the door frame is the strength element supporting the wall. In this case, its dismantling may lead to subsidence of the partition and the appearance of cracks. For this reason, such openings are first strengthened.

Such frames ensure uniform distribution of the load on the walls. For example, it increases if the opening is trimmed with stone. You should also think about the environmental friendliness of materials. If you buy too cheap products without thinking about their quality, the consequences can be unpleasant.

conclusions

Thus, finishing an opening without a door is a fairly popular method of arranging the space between two rooms. This allows you to complement the interior with interesting details, as well as visually enlarge the space. There is enough a large number of options for finishing openings.

Arched structures are very attractive and can be installed in apartments of any style. However, when choosing this option, it is worth considering the features of the layout of the living space.

Materials for finishing the opening can be very different - polyurethane stucco, stones, clinker tiles, plastic panels. This variety allows you to choose the most suitable option for your apartment.

The design of an opening without a door involves several features. Not all materials are suitable for this type of finishing, and the selected options will have to be handled quite carefully. Some structures can be created with your own hands, but the construction of others is best left to a professional.

Peculiarities

The logical conclusion would be that a doorway without a door is made entirely without a door frame. All decoration includes only the lining of the opening itself, which is done using a variety of different materials.

The design of a doorless opening allows you to choose from a variety of shapes, including classic and interesting fancy options.

Not every room will have an opening without a door that will look appropriate. There are some rooms that must have a door, and these include not only the toilet and bathroom. The bedroom, kitchen, office must be equipped with a full door Since these rooms are larger than others, there is a need for privacy and intimacy.

However, every rule can be circumvented. For additional decoration of such openings, curtains, muslin, and screens are used. They allow you to create the illusion of dividing the room without completely replacing the door.

Decorating an open doorway implies relying on the integrity of the entire home. As a rule, identical doorless openings are made in an apartment or house. This applies to both shape and finish. They act as a connecting element, uniting all rooms into a single ensemble.

Speaking about the advantages that open openings have compared to classic doorways, we cannot fail to mention saving space. Each door occupies at least a square meter of usable space. When creating a doorless structure, this problem disappears. From an aesthetic point of view, an opening allows you to visually expand the space or expand the functional area of the room by combining it with a utility room. A good example is a common combination of a balcony and a living room lately.

In some cases, a doorless space looks much more attractive than a door, especially when it is beautifully decorated. For example, shelves are often placed along the contour of such an opening. The figurines or other little things placed on them beautifully frame the skylight, creating a unique atmosphere that cannot be repeated. Thus, sometimes an open doorway looks even more intimate than a thick oak door.

Finally, another important advantage is creating sufficient ventilation in the apartment. Air circulates better through open space, and for small apartments, for example, like in houses built by Khrushchev, this factor is important - it allows you to combat stuffiness.

Creating several openings can completely change the original layout of the apartment, but in reality it comes out much cheaper than a full-fledged redevelopment.

In addition, the opening can often be created even in load-bearing wall, so there are many more options for a new apartment plan.

Kinds

There are many different configurations of doorways without a door, which differ from each other not only in their shape, but also in the material with which they are created. Along with traditional raw materials, we also use latest developments in the field of design.

The simplest in design is ordinary rectangular span. Creating a rectangular opening is very simple: the door frame is completely dismantled, then the surface of the walls is leveled along the contour. In the future, the resulting gap is simply painted or lined with a suitable material. There are a great variety of finishing methods, starting with the simple installation of wooden extensions and ending with the creation of pompous stucco columns.

More popular building arched structures. To do this, it is not necessary to expand the existing opening in the wall, but last years The idea of creating false arches is actively used. In this case, corner elements made of polyurethane or plasterboard with rounded sides are installed in the rectangular span, and the result is a full-fledged arch with much less cost and labor. However, this method is not suitable for all homes: it is necessary that the opening be of sufficient height.

There are several types of arches:

  • Rounded arch. It is a classic interpretation and can be used in absolutely any room, regardless of the parameters, but there is one unspoken rule. The lower the ceiling, the wider the arched span should be.
  • Trapezoidal span. It is created from straight lines and can only be called an arch conditionally. Designers do not recommend using this form because of its strong association with a funeral accessory - a coffin.
  • Triangular arch. There are a huge number of subtypes of triangular arches: keeled, pointed horseshoe, Tudor. Similar elements came into modern design from the Middle Ages, and they are used preferably in tall, spacious rooms.

More and more often, people are abandoning the creation of ordinary classical openings in favor of fancy asymmetrical ones.

They can only be made in plasterboard partition walls. Asymmetrical openings can have any shape you like, and can also be supplemented with all kinds of auxiliary details: shelves, niches, lighting. This design acts as bright element and sets the tone for the entire appearance of the room. Catching your gaze, an asymmetrical opening helps to hide possible flaws when renovating a room.

Dimensions

It is possible to balance the proportions of rooms in an apartment using doorways without doors. Depending on whether the opening is wide or narrow, high or low, the impression made varies.

For rooms with low ceilings It is strictly not recommended to install narrow spans. Visually they will make the room tiny and uncomfortable. It is better to choose a wide option that will visually expand the area of the room, add air and light to it. This applies not only to arched openings, but also to rectangular ones.

The optimal height also depends on the original proportions of the room. If you want to use a skylight to combine two rooms, it is recommended to make it almost as high as the ceiling. An ordinary span, serving only as an alternative to a door, should be made significantly lower, but its height should not be lower than 2 m. In the case of arches, this figure increases by at least 30 cm. This is due not so much to aesthetic rules as to safety requirements: people may hit the upper narrow part of the arch hard in the dark.

When constructing asymmetrical structures, the following rule should be followed: the more intricate the shape, the wider the opening should be. Too much concentration of monograms and other elements in a small space will overload the look, making the design unnecessarily pretentious and cumbersome. As a result, instead of a spectacular accent, you will get a tasteless option that you will soon get tired of.

Thus, the size of the doorway is largely determined by the characteristics of the room itself, and not by the chosen shape.

Remember that very wide doorways are best decorated using some kind of texture, for example, relief moldings. If you use ordinary smooth cladding, the light will be “lost” against the general background of the room and, from an aesthetic point of view, will not look particularly harmonious.

In various rooms

In the vast majority of cases, the advisability of installing a doorless opening is obvious, however, sometimes refusing a door is extremely undesirable. Some of the rooms where it is best to leave a door include the kitchen. This is especially true in small apartments, where a strong kitchen odor will be especially annoying. It's not always pleasant when scents are felt in the living room or bedroom.

The old boring interior of the living room can be changed beyond recognition, at the same time intelligently expanding usable area. If you abandon the separate balcony block and the door to the balcony, you will be able to make the living room brighter. The balcony will certainly need to be furnished in a style similar to the living room, since the rooms, united by a doorless skylight, should be perceived as a single whole.

You can often encounter cases where the door is refused between the corridor and the dressing room. Since both of these spaces are quite small and cramped, this move helps hide this fact, allowing people to feel more free.

In small apartments, doors between the hallway and the living room are abandoned, especially if the apartment is one-room. This way the entire area is perceived as a single whole, making the home seem larger.

In cases where such a small apartment has low ceilings, it is better not to choose an arched shape as an opening. It is much more logical to focus on the classic rectangular span.

It is quite rare for people to refuse a door to the bedroom, but they do not dare to completely leave the entrance “defenseless”. They come to the rescue thick curtains or screens, which perfectly protect the intimacy of the room. If necessary, they can be easily and quickly dismantled. Interesting solution is the use of curtains with tiebacks: at night they can be completely closed, and during the day they will serve as a beautiful frame for the opening.

How to apply correctly?

The opening is cashed with different materials and using different techniques. You can decorate the interior space with your own hands, or you can turn to professionals who will create a complex and unique decor.

Good idea– decorate the doorway with curtains.

A decorative curtain plays the same role as a door psychologically, but it takes up much less space. If desired, the curtains can be removed completely without any problems or replaced with others, and the appearance of the opening structure will not be affected (for example, if you simply remove door leaf, there will be loops along the flight that don’t look very attractive).

Another option for decorating a doorway without a door is to use additional elements registration – various stucco panels. With their help, it will be possible to improve any opening, regardless of how smooth walls and in what colors the opening is made. Finishing is extremely simple and is often done entirely independently.

With the help of stucco it is possible to decorate openings in various styles. For example, you can make a classic arch with columns and heavy shaped elements. If you add gilding, you will be able to completely recreate the spirit of baroque or classic. For modern interiors, it is more appropriate to use simple relief moldings with geometric patterns, for example, embossed lines and grooves. If in the first case it was appropriate to choose pilasters and capitals, then in the second they should be avoided.

Stucco molding can be found quite rarely; it has practically gone out of use recently. This is due to the relatively small dimensions modern apartments, because in small spaces intricate designs look ridiculous. You shouldn’t completely abandon stucco elements: some of them can help expand the room.

Also, to design door openings without doors, artificial stone masonry, clinker tiles or plasterboard are often used.

Materials

Cladding a doorway without a door can be done using a variety of materials. The simplest solution is to paint the gap or cover it with the same wallpaper as the walls. However, there is one “but”: only perfectly smooth walls are suitable for this, otherwise the whole structure will look insufficiently neat and as if made hastily.

Another option is to make a box from the extensions and place it in the gap or sheathe it MDF panels. In both cases, you will get a wooden aperture that looks stylish and can be harmoniously integrated into almost any interior.

It is best to frame the opening with valuable wood or its imitation, since these are the solutions that look the best.

It is also possible to cover the gap with plasterboard. Drywall - truly unique material. With its help, you can form a structure of almost any configuration, supplementing it with elements from other lightweight materials, for example, polyurethane.

You can easily make a simple plasterboard opening yourself, and it will not take much time, and the effect will please you.

Often the gaps are lined with imitation stone or clinker tiles. Clinker tiles imitate brick, but they weigh several times less. They release tiles different forms: There are classic elements, as well as special corner ones. Available on the market big variety sizes, but the most popular are medium-sized tiles. The seams between the tiles are usually rubbed with a composition that exactly imitates the main covering of the walls.

Artificial stone looks more interesting than clinker tiles. There are imitations of various materials: limestone, marble, malachite and many others. This material has many advantages: such cladding looks expensive, harmonizes perfectly with other finishing materials, has a long service life and wear resistance, and is also very easy to maintain. Laying such material can be carried out either in a geometrically thought-out order, or chaotically - both options look equally successful.

Both tiles and stone are attached either with tile adhesive (when the walls under them are not leveled well enough) or with liquid nails (if the walls have a perfectly flat surface).

How to do it yourself decorative arch, lined with gypsum stone and bas-reliefs, see the following video.

Options in the interior

A fairly simple opening with a slightly curved edge adds pomp and grandeur to the room. Its unusual structure is made in fairly restrained proportions: straight lines are used, and there is no complex decor. Almost flat square shape helps to visually maintain the proportions of the room without creating any visual illusions.

Usage natural materials welcome when creating the design of a doorless opening. Wood and raw stone harmonize well with each other, despite the fact that the wood was selected from a valuable species, and the stone was the most ordinary one. The play on contrasts deserves special attention: firstly, wood and stone of contrasting colors are used, and secondly, the smooth edge of the wooden frame is adjacent to the torn edges of the masonry.

When undertaking renovations in their own apartment, the owners try to use all possible design techniques to increase the space of small rooms. For this purpose, many refuse to install interior doors, thus combining several rooms together. This solution allows you to expand the boundaries of the room and make it more spacious. But in our article we will look at how to decorate a doorway without a door so that it becomes a real decoration of the interior.

Opening design options

So, if you decide to refresh your interior with an opening, then first we recommend deciding on its future form. It can remain rectangular, take the shape of an arch, or acquire additional corners. In any case, the design of the interior passage should fit well into the interior of both rooms. That is why you should not immediately go to the store for finishing materials, which in the end will become completely useless.

In order to successfully design a doorway without a door with your own hands, first of all you should sketch out a sketch future design. Let's look at the most popular ways to design passages between adjacent rooms.

Openings in the form of a portal

This is the most popular and simplest design that can be done. with my own hands. In this case, the entrance retains its rectangular shape, but is complemented by a more massive finish with various decorative elements.

Usually, to arrange such an opening it is necessary to remove, dismantle the box and remove all structural elements former door. The resulting passage is leveled and finished with selected materials. Rectangular openings are suitable for both small and large rooms, and their design style is most often strict and restrained.

Arched passages

Arched doorways most often have a classic shape. In this design option, the arch arch is made in the form of a semicircle, the radius of which is equal to half the width of the passage itself. Oval openings are quite popular and easy to implement. However, before choosing this option, pay attention to the height of the ceilings in your apartment. In rooms where the height of the walls does not exceed two meters, it is strictly not recommended to design a rounded opening, as it will visually lower the ceiling even more.

Here it is better to give preference to an ellipse-shaped arch. This option is optimal for rooms with low ceilings, since special shape vault allows you to visually increase the height of the walls.

Irregularly shaped openings

If simple shapes do not satisfy the needs of the owners, you can experiment and create more difficult option. Since there are no strict rules in modern interior design, the shape of the passage can be the most unusual and even slightly bizarre.

Often in the form of a trapezoid, triangle, semicircle and various asymmetrical configurations, with oblique slopes to one side. A combination of several figures is also possible. For example, when a rectangular portal is complemented by rounded corners of various radii. This design is used only in cases where the width of the doorway is more than 80 cm.

Often in modern design projects you can see unusual openings equipped with spotlights, side shelves or bar counters. This approach not only decorates the room, but also makes the passage between rooms a functional element of the interior.

Designs decorated with colored glass, stained glass or mosaic fragments deserve special attention. It is very difficult to do this kind of design yourself, so in most cases this work is entrusted to professionals. It should be noted that complex and shaped arches can only be installed in cases where the width of the doorway is larger than the standard one. Most often, this design is used in studio apartments. In small and low rooms It is better to give preference to a strict classical style.

Once you have clearly decided what shape your passage will be, you can begin finishing it and choosing decorative elements. Let's start with choosing the material.

Design options

When wondering how to decorate a doorway without a door, explore all possible finishing options and choose the one that best suits your interior.

Today, the following materials are actively used for these purposes:

Decorative rock;

Polyurethane;

Decorative plaster;

Plastic;

Let’s look at what each material is and how you can use it to design a doorway in more detail.

Tree

The most noble and spectacular finish is considered to be one involving natural wood. The most valuable wood species can be used here, such as ash, oak, mahogany and hornbeam.

These types are distinguished by their presentability and durability, but are too difficult to process and have a high price tag. That is why pine products are the most popular today. It has an affordable price, is quite durable, has a beautiful structure and, most importantly, can be easily processed with hand tools.

Such arches are sold as finished products, which only need to be installed in the right place.

As an alternative to natural wood, you can use MDF panels. They are lightweight, affordable price and a wide range of colors.

Plastic panels

Plastic finishing refers to economical options decorating openings. The material is quite easy to work with, as it does not require preliminary preparation base and attached to ordinary liquid nails.

Despite their simplicity, plastic panels look very presentable. They emphasize the severity of the interior and create a contrast in the opening area against the background of the adjacent walls. This design is also convenient because the plastic is resistant to moisture, which means it can be used near the kitchen. Plastic finishing can be done by anyone, since even if any mistakes are made, the damaged element can be easily replaced.

Polyurethane

If you are wondering how to beautifully decorate a doorway without a door, pay attention to polyurethane decor. It's quite dense, but at the same time flexible material, which is used to create an imitation of heavy and expensive gypsum stucco. This design looks very attractive, and is much cheaper than tiles and decorative stone.

Polyurethane stucco molding is attached using a special glue to a wide variety of surfaces. The light weight of the material allows it to be used even on plasterboard structures. Initially decorative elements are white, but can subsequently be painted in any shade.

Using this material, the doorway can be decorated with round or square columns that widen upward. If the room small size or massive elements simply do not fit into its design, you can decorate the walls with more elegant moldings made of the same material.

Fake diamond

Decorative stone is distinguished by its ability to bring sophistication to the interior and emphasize the high wealth and good taste of the owner. Today in the construction market you can find a lot of varieties of this finishing material, differing in color and texture. Of course, such finishing cannot be called economical, but these costs are justified, because artificial stone in the interior always looks luxurious.

Finishing a doorway with decorative stone will require a lot of effort, but the result is always impressive. In most cases, they cover not only the passage, but also part of the adjacent walls. Both symmetrical and asymmetrical design can be used here. If the doorways are located close to each other, they can be decorated in the same style. The smoothly transitioning cladding from one opening to another looks impressive.

If you decide to use artificial stone in the interior of your apartment, pay attention to the weight of the material you choose. Some types can greatly weigh down the doorway, making it impossible to use them on plasterboard structures. In this case, it is better to give preference to gypsum options.

How to do stone finishing yourself?

1. First you need to prepare the walls. If there are large irregularities on the surface of the base, they are eliminated using putty.

2. Next, start mixing the glue. If lightweight options were chosen for lining the opening, they are attached to ordinary liquid nails. Heavier varieties, like clinker tiles, are mounted on a mortar of cement, glue, lime and sand.

3. Cladding the opening begins from the lowest section of the wall. The product is leveled, smeared with glue and pressed tightly against the wall. If you do not want to additionally seal the stone joints in the corner parts of the opening, the material must be overlapped. The brick of the first row is placed close to the opening, and the element of the next row is shifted inward, at a distance equal to the thickness of the finishing material. Thus, alternating rows, they design the opening.

Curtains

If your plans do not include renovating your apartment in the near future, but you really want to add fresh notes to the interior, be smart and hang curtains on the doorway. This move will allow you to simultaneously decorate and, if necessary, hide the passage between rooms.

Fabric curtains look good on openings of absolutely any geometry. The main thing is to pay special attention to the choice of colors and textures so that they fit harmoniously into the interior of the room. Otherwise there are no restrictions. They can be weighty with lambrequins, drapery, or discreet and light.

If the interior of the apartment is decorated in oriental style, here Products from natural wood with a variety of sticks and beads will be an excellent decoration for the doorway. This option is also attractive because it does not accumulate dust and does not interfere with air circulation between rooms.

When choosing curtains for a doorway, pay attention to thread options. They are presented on the market in the form of fabric cords, which are complemented with various pieces of glass, shells and stones. Textiles can cover the entire passage or be used as its frame.

This design method is attractive because it can be easily done with your own hands, and the affordable cost and variety of options allow you to change the design of the interior opening at least every year.

Decorative plaster

Another simple way to decorate a doorway without a door is to decorate it with decorative plaster. It is suitable for those owners who want to do the work with their own hands, since this process does not cause any particular difficulties even for inexperienced craftsmen. This design is considered quite durable and easy to maintain. The dried surface can be easily painted in the desired color, thanks to which the opening will fit well into any interior.

Before applying the solution, the base is leveled and the caps of the fasteners are masked. Next, the opening is treated with a primer, after which they begin to apply the decorating composition. Using special rollers and stamps, the solution is given the desired relief. After the plaster has dried, it is painted with coloring compounds or covered with finishing solutions.

Conclusion

As you can see, there are many ideas on how to design a doorway without a door. When choosing suitable style You can turn to specialists for help, or you can create your own and unique design project. The main thing is that all materials used in the interior are harmoniously combined with each other. Only in this case will you be able to create an original and attractive doorway design style. We hope that the information you read was useful, and the photographs posted in this article helped you with your choice. optimal option design of the passage between rooms.

Entrance door edging

Sometimes combining the space of adjacent rooms is the most optimal planning solution. The reason for this is both a banal lack of space, in which every square of living space counts, and considerations of the aesthetic perception of the interior.

And then, if we think purely practically: a door is not always needed - so why spend money on buying it. It is much easier, in accordance with the concept of the interior decoration style, to frame doorways with stucco molding or line them with wooden planks.

If you simply take the door off its hinges, the bare frame in the opening will not look good. The half-hinges and strike plate of the lock will be an eyesore and disrupt the harmony in the interior. To avoid this, an opening in which there is no door can and should be beautifully lined, after which it, as they say, will become that very “cherry on the cake.”

Using door extensions

The first question that the reader may have is: “When upgrading an opening, is it necessary to dismantle door frame?. It can be left, but only in one case - when the opening is refinished with wooden panels, and provided that the old frame is installed level.

  • If the wood is worn out, it is better to remove it and level the opening with ordinary planed boards 15-20 mm thick. Their width is selected according to the thickness of the wall. The blank for the horizontal bar is sawn off along the width of the opening, and the two side posts are cut out according to its height, minus the thickness of the crossbar that will rest on their ends.

  • If the door slopes are uneven, then wooden wedges are inserted under the leveling strips, checking that their position is correct and level. The gap formed between the board and the surface of the slope is filled polyurethane foam, let it dry, and only then proceed to cutting and installing decorative strips.
  • Their role is played by extensions used for lining slopes in deep openings that cannot be covered with a frame. In our case, they are installed on top of an old box, or a board frame, which is done solely for the sake of alignment.

  • If the opening is smooth, then, in principle, you can install the extensions directly to the base base. But then you will have to drill holes in them for dowels, which, no matter how you hide them, will be visible. Decorative plugs can be used, but they are regularly lost, leaving the attachment points visible.

Note! When the extension is mounted to a wooden frame, micropins can be used as fasteners, which extend into the thickness of the plank and remain almost invisible. But for this you need a tool like the one you see in the photo above.

  • Cutting and installation of extensions is carried out similarly to the elements of the leveling frame. Now that you have perfectly smooth slopes, installing cladding on them with your own hands is as easy as shelling pears. The main thing is not to damage the front surface of the decorative strips when cutting.

In addition, it is very important to make high-quality cuts, which is not always possible when working with a hacksaw. It is best to use a miter saw for this purpose. It is simply irreplaceable when framing doorways with stucco, which will be discussed in the next chapter.

Framing with polymer stucco

Today, plaster stucco molding is only used to decorate rooms in the Rococo, Empire or Renaissance styles - and even then, designers have long been interpreting them in a modern way. It is more difficult to work with gypsum, and the price of such finishing is higher, so the best alternative to it is polyurethane stucco molding made in best traditions classical architecture.

Duropolymer or polyurethane: what is the difference

Relatively recently, such a concept as duropolymer stucco has appeared. What is it, and how does this material differ from polyurethane? And this is a composite that is under high pressure made from polystyrene. It has a high density - and, accordingly, strength, which compares favorably with polystyrene foam.

  • TO negative qualities Products made from duropolymer are heavier than polyurethane and have a rather meager range. The advantages are excellent mechanical strength. This property is doubly valuable when it comes to furniture, because it is clear that in the process of bringing large furniture into a room, there is always a danger of snagging and damaging the decor.

  • In appearance, duropolymer cladding is almost impossible to distinguish from polyurethane stucco. This set, which you see in the picture above, costs about 3600-3700 rubles. To cover an opening on both sides, two such sets are required, plus two long and one short internal panels.
  • Door frames made of polyurethane molded products are usually not sold as a set, but are made up of individual elements according to the customer’s taste. This can be a composition of sandstone or cornice, moldings, which in this case play the role of platbands - as well as consoles, rustications and keystones. All details can be selected according to style and size, and alternate them when facing as you like.

  • To decorate the side surfaces of slopes, as well as walls adjacent to the opening, you can use panels that imitate beautiful bas-reliefs. What is important is flexibility polyurethane products allows you to veneer not only straight, but also spherical surfaces, and in the overwhelming majority, they are used today to decorate arches.
  • Choosing stucco cladding for openings allows you to show your imagination - but, of course, it should not be a chaotic set of details. The design of the opening needs to be carefully thought out and correlated with the decoration of the room as a whole, as well as the design of the door panels, if they are installed.
  • Both duropolymer and polyurethane door decor are mounted in the same way: using the adhesive method, on a flat, puttied and primed surface. Leveling the slopes can be done either wet or dry.

For example, if initially there was no opening in the wall, the metal frame, which is made for the purpose of reinforcement, can only be hidden under the plaster. Applied over a steel mesh, in this case it is part of the technology, and is carried out even when the walls in the room, and accordingly the openings, are sheathed with plasterboard (see).

A little about installation

The short instructions presented in this chapter will help you understand the installation of polyurethane stucco molding. By and large, there is no particular difference where exactly it is installed: on the wall, ceiling or in the opening - the technology will be the same.

So:

  • Before decorating openings, products must be adapted to the environment, so they need to lie down indoors for a day or two. Since the decor is installed using the adhesive method, it is very important that the surfaces with which the glue will come into contact are clean. Therefore, it is advisable not only to remove dust from them, but also to degrease the back side of the products with a solvent (not acetone).
  • Work should be carried out at temperatures above +10 degrees. Installation stucco decoration It is recommended to carry out this before starting to finish the ceilings and walls. When cutting moldings, you need to take into account that cutting the corners takes about 10 cm of their length. In this case, it is also necessary to keep in mind the repetition of the pattern, if there is one on the front surface.

  • When working with polymer stucco, you should have tools such as a level, protractor, tape measure, furniture stapler, a set of rubber spatulas, a glue gun, a hacksaw, a miter saw, a stationery knife. Concerning Supplies, then you need to have two types of glue: mounting and joining.
  • It is very important that the plastered or puttied base on which the stucco molding will be glued dries well. Otherwise, the decor may peel off, which will ruin not only the work, but also the material. On the base base, the products are placed on mounting glue, and when joining decorative elements to each other, glue is used.
  • Mounting adhesive is applied to the end of the molding in a layer about 5 mm thick. The stucco molding should be pressed tightly against the wall, and any excess that protrudes out should be immediately removed with a spatula. After joining the horizontal and vertical frame elements using glue, they are additionally secured with metal brackets.

  • After about a day, but not earlier, you will need to cut off the excess joint glue. This is perhaps the most painstaking work. It should be done very carefully, since the joints should not be visible - it depends on appearance door frame. Products made from polyurethane are sold already primed for painting, so after removing the glue, you can begin to putty.

For this purpose, either a special elastic putty for finishing polyurethane or adhesive is used. white, which, as a “two in one”, can be used for installing stucco molding and finishing joints. After the putty joints have dried, their surface must be sanded. sandpaper with fine dusting, remove the dust - and you can start painting.

Exist various options doorway finishing. They help to obtain a harmonious and stylish design premises. It must be taken into account that these designs are divided into two types, which depend on the presence or absence of a door leaf. It is this element that determines the sequence of activities carried out in order to obtain the desired effect.

Methods for lining openings without door panels

There are two main options for finishing a doorway without a door:

  1. Standard. This technology involves lining openings various materials, without changing the design.
  2. Arched. This method involves changing the configuration of the opening - significantly or slightly.

Each method requires compliance with certain rules, as well as accuracy.

Various types of materials for standard finishing

To design a doorway without a door, finishing products are used that have different technological features.

PVC panels

This option is one of the most popular. This is facilitated by the fact that such products have excellent characteristics and are also very affordable. For installation, the glue-on method is often used. The panels are mainly used to cover slopes. Other parts of the doorway are finished with other materials.

On a note! PVC products require careful selection. To create a coating that will look harmonious in the interior, you should give preference to varieties made as imitation of natural materials.

Everything is done as follows:

Requires leaving the structure for a while to avoid displacement of elements. Now let's start eliminating external joints. If you cover them with plastic corners, as is done when covering windows, you may get a not very attractive effect. Therefore, it is better to putty with putty. Then you can begin the subsequent finishing. For this purpose, painting and wallpapering are carried out.

You should know! Exist plastic trims, which combine well with PVC panels. But pruning them is a very labor-intensive task. The fact is that it is necessary to adjust the elements at an angle of 90 degrees.

The best replacement for PVC would be MDF panels. Finishing openings with this material goes well with other products. If it is necessary to cladding structures using this method in order to eliminate formations visible joints, lamination is used.

Stucco molding

It is immediately worth noting that stucco molding is currently used, which is made from polyurethane. Unlike gypsum options, this type The product is characterized by low weight. Its installation can be performed without the involvement of additional assistants. Important feature What makes this material so special is that it can be processed further. That is, it is easy to paint in different colors.

The finishing of the opening is carried out according to a certain scheme:

  • All parts and glue are pre-conditioned in the room where installation will take place for 24 hours. This will ensure that all elements get used to the existing microclimate.
  • The areas that will be pasted over are carefully coated with primer. Only compositions that have a deep penetrating effect are selected.

Important! It should be remembered that the stucco sticker is done first. Only after this can general finishing of the walls be carried out.

  • The surfaces of the products are slightly rubbed with sandpaper. Next, glue is applied. It is evenly distributed along the wrong side of the fragments. Now the stucco molding is applied to the selected area and pressed well. To prevent the elements from slipping, small screws are screwed under them.
  • If excess glue appears, it is removed immediately. When this cannot be done immediately, you can use acetone, which is used to moisten a sponge.
  • An important point is the joining of elements. It can be carried out at a right angle (perpendicular installation), or trimming can be performed, which is done at an angle of 45 degrees.
  • After cladding, joints appear. They are hidden using putty, which, after drying, is rubbed down with sandpaper. Particular care should be taken when finishing between rooms, because it is necessary to provide for the location of parts on both sides.

Decorating a doorway with stucco requires some nuances. This option is most suitable for rooms that have fairly high ceilings. If you use it for small rooms, then it is advisable to carefully consider the location of all elements. The fact is that it is quite easy to overload a room so that the interior becomes simply ruined.

Fake diamond

The use of artificial stone is an excellent solution that helps to decorate a doorway without a door in a very stylish and modern way. This option is superior to similar products due to the fact that the material is produced in a wide decorative range. For example, clinker tiles are also used for cladding such structures, but their choice is quite limited.

On a note! It should be borne in mind that the concept “artificial” does not detract from the merits of this product. The imitation is carried out with excellent accuracy. The texture and shades of natural stones are repeated.

Decorating a doorway with artificial stone

Before decorating a doorway without a door with decorative stone, you should familiarize yourself with its advantages. The following advantages of the material are highlighted:

  • Excellent appearance that brings presentability to the interior.
  • Possibility of combination with other finishing materials.
  • Excellent resistance to mechanical stress.
  • Durability. The service life is calculated in decades.

For work, small-sized products are used that have some relief. If you choose a deeper texture, it will look very bulky.

Cladding is carried out according to various technologies. Often laying is done in a way that allows for uneven edges to be formed.

On a note! Currently, special elements have been developed that act as corner pads. They allow you to avoid unnecessary pruning.

Making the opening is quite simple:

  1. Marking is carried out in selected areas. It should repeat the developed scheme. To carry out this process most accurately, the stone is laid out on the floor in a given order.
  2. Wall surfaces are treated with primers that have deep penetration. This will improve adhesion. It is important to let all areas dry thoroughly.
  3. Fixation can be carried out using special tile adhesive or “liquid nails”. The second option is suitable for cases where the base has almost perfect evenness.
  4. The composition is applied to the reverse side of the elements. It is important to remove any excess.
  5. The stone is laid in ways that make it possible to form a seam or make do with a monolithic surface (without joints).
  6. The parts settle into place and press together. It is important to achieve good grip.
  7. If joints have been formed, they are rubbed down. The color of the mixture can be contrasting or monochromatic.

If the question arises: what is the best way to decorate a doorway that does not have doors, the first thing to consider is options that include artificial stone, decorative brick and clinker.

Plaster

Recently, this material has seen a noticeable decline in popularity. But just recently, about ten years ago, this method seemed to be the most accessible. It's safe to say that many people simply underestimate plaster. Indeed, this option has several significant disadvantages - labor-intensive application (in the absence of experience) and the presence of a certain amount of “dirt”. But if you do all the work correctly, and also achieve a combination with other products, the effect will be pleasantly surprising.

How to decorate a doorway without a door by plastering:

  1. The required amount of mixture is prepared. The solution made should be in such quantity that it is enough for 30-45 minutes of work.
  2. The mixture is applied to the surface by casting. Leveling occurs using a rule or a wide spatula.
  3. If required, beacons and perforated profile guides are installed.
  4. When the mortar layer exceeds 1-1.5 cm, a reinforcing mesh is laid.

This surface can be painted. But it’s better if the plaster serves as the starting composition. Then finishing decorative (textured) putty may act. It is applied in a certain order, which allows you to get an amazing coating. Such doorways will decorate the interior.

Arch device

An arch can transform an interior. It is important to understand that a device of this design requires some experience. After all, to decorate a doorway exclusively with your own hands, you will need to spend a lot of effort.

You should know! There are standard-sized arches that are completely ready for installation. They just need to be carefully installed.

Doorway in the form of an arch

The easiest way to make arches is made of plasterboard. It looks like this:

  1. Finishing doorways begins with installing a frame on both sides. It is fixed on the upper horizontal and vertical racks. On the latter, it has a size that is almost equal to the end of the rounding.
  2. GCR parts are attached to the frame. An arc is pre-cut on them; a stencil is made for this.
  3. Additional lathing is performed inside the resulting structure. It serves to fasten the last arcuate plasterboard element.
  4. The final finishing is done with putty. Decorative cladding is made using various materials.

The arch can be made using more “noble” products, but will require more skill.

Other design methods

The design of doorways can be done using other methods. They involve the use of decorative curtains or screens. This method is very affordable and simple. In addition, it does not require virtually any work.

Various options can be used:

  1. Fabric curtains. They will be a great addition to any interior. The composition should be composed in such a way that there is harmony with other elements and combination with window decoration.
  2. Bamboo curtains. This option is suitable when the room is made in eco style.
  3. Thread curtains. These products are used if you want to fill the room with unusualness.

Of course, everyone chooses how to design the opening based on their taste and preferences.

What can be done with an opening equipped with a door

Deciding how to make a doorway that has a door leaf involves using the most simple options. The only difference is where this structure is located.

Simple arrangement of interior space

The most affordable finishing option interior openings installation of the box and adjacent elements is considered. General technology is this:

  • The box is installed. It can be equipped with a threshold or without it.
  • Extensions are used as materials that will line the slopes. They are released standard size(up to 120-150 mm).
  • These elements are attached using a groove on the box. If such a design feature is not provided, then fixation is performed using self-tapping screws. The hole for them is drilled through the end of the part.
  • External finishing is done using platbands that frame the opening.

This option is great for situations where you need to cladding not very wide structures.

Other options

How to decorate a doorway that has a door in a more original way? In reality, to create a truly interesting option, you need to try. The fact is that it is the hanging canvas that limits the use of different materials. Improper use of finishing products prevents opening. Although, if you consider this feature, then almost everything is suitable for exterior decoration.

On a note! There is a sliding way to open the door. That is, the canvases repeat the design of compartment doors. This is a rather interesting technological solution that requires a more careful selection of facing products.

How to finish a doorway? This question has many answers, depending on specific situation. But no matter what anyone advises, you still need to listen to your heart and choose the option that will be closest to you.
