Materials for bumper repair. How to repair a plastic bumper yourself

The bumpers of modern cars are made mainly of plastic, they are damaged in a small accident and hitting is not an obstacle.

Various car services are engaged in the repair of body parts, some of them specialize in this type of restoration work. In order to save money, some car owners do their own plastic bumper repairs. What are the features in the self-restoration of these body elements will be discussed in the article.

As you know, there are front and rear bumpers, and the front bumper (PB) is damaged much more often than the rear (ZB). The PB needs to be repaired if:

  • damaged paintwork;
  • on plastic element scratches appeared;
  • Cracks have formed in the bumper due to a collision with an obstacle or a small accident.

If the blow to the front or rear of the car was severe, the bumper is most likely beyond repair. But in specialized car services, they often take on the repair of a badly broken plastic bumper. The whole question is whether the restoration is worth the money, in some cases it is easier and cheaper to buy a new part.

The price of repairing a PB or ST can be different, it depends on the level of the car service, the degree of damage to the part, the complexity of the restoration. For example, in Moscow, the restoration of a bumper can cost from 2,500 rubles, and painting of one element will also cost from 5,000 rubles. There are auto repair centers that promise to repair the bumper from 500 rubles, to complete the repair within one or two hours. It’s not worth it to advertise, most likely, car owners are being deceived, or repairs are performed poorly here.

Plastic bumper restoration

Repair of the front or rear bumper can be of varying complexity, there are main types of work that are carried out with body elements:

  • sealing cracks;
  • restoration of plastic fragments;
  • dent repair;
  • preparation for painting (cleaning, sanding);
  • primer;
  • painting;
  • restoration, repair of fasteners.

Restoring a plastic bumper requires care and accuracy, sufficient experience, and only a qualified craftsman can perform the work with high quality.

PB repair becomes profitable if the bumper itself is rare, installed on an expensive car, on which the car owner does not want to install a cheap “non-original”. There are also tuning bumpers - they are expensive, and the industry does not produce non-original spare parts of this kind.

If the car is budget, and the owner of the car is "hands on", you can try to repair the PB yourself. Much depends on the degree of damage; you can restore a slightly broken body part with your own hands. Repair of the front bumper (with a crack) is carried out with the removal of the body part from the car, and to seal the crack, you need to connect the edges of the damaged area - make a reliable lock.

There are special repair kits on sale, for example, from 3M. The FPRM kit includes:

We prepare the bumper for gluing as follows:

  • the damaged area to be repaired is thoroughly washed with soapy water, we give time for the plastic to dry thoroughly;
  • We grind the repaired area, remove the paintwork from it. We clean the paint so that the area freed from it can be glued with adhesive tape;
  • at an angle of 45 degrees we grind the edges of the crack, they should be in the form of wedges. We process the surface first from the inside, and then from the outside, for this we use a grinder with a cleaning disk;
  • we clean the treated surface with the composition 3M 08985, we wait for the complete evaporation of the degreaser;
  • stick tape with outer side glued area;
  • With inside fix the reinforcing mesh;
  • mix epoxy components in a ratio of one to one;
  • we apply the prepared composition on the reinforcing mesh, with a spatula, we push it inward, it should close the crack;
  • warm the crack with infrared drying (6-8 minutes). If there is no special device for drying, let the glue dry at room temperature for about 30 minutes;
  • remove the adhesive tape, degrease, treat the front part with an adhesion activator;
  • prepare the composition for the front side;
  • apply glue outside the crack;
  • again let the parts dry;
  • dry surface treated abrasive wheels, first with a coarser abrasive (180), then with fine sandpaper (240, at the end of processing - 400);
  • blowing out the repaired area compressed air, clean with the composition from the 3M 08985 set, wipe with a dry cloth. Now the bumper is ready for painting.

Damage to the bumper can be different - in one case it is just a crack, in the other, pieces of plastic fly off upon impact. To solder a plastic element, you will need:

  • building hair dryer;
  • angle grinder;
  • pliers;
  • screwdriver;
  • soldering iron;
  • sandpaper;
  • spatulas.

The soldering iron must be powerful enough, preferably at least 100 watts.

If the pieces of the bumper are broken off and lost, we initially modify the damaged areas, give them a rectangular or triangular shape.

We perform the work in the following order:

If you need to solder pieces of missing plastic to the bumper, it is advisable to take plastic of the same type, the marking is usually indicated on the inside of the plastic parts.

To solder the missing pieces to the bumper, proceed as follows:

If you cannot cut the right piece exactly to size, you can cut off the plastic with a margin and solder it on the inside of the bumper. But this option is worse, since when soldering from the front part, a hole is formed around the patch.

The surface can be leveled in two ways:

  • melt everything outside with plastic;
  • apply a layer of putty to the surface, then process it.

After soldering and applying putty, we process the surface, prime the bumper and paint.

Many drivers are faced with the problem of cracks on the bumper of the car. If it is plastic, then you can do the repair of the damaged area with your own hands. There are many various ways restoration of the aesthetic appearance of the bumper from this material without resorting to the services of a car service.

Types of bumpers and materials from which they are made

Modern autobumpers can be made of metal and plastic.

In turn, plastic can be made from 2 types of material:

  • thermoactive;
  • thermoset.

What is the difference between thermoset plastic auto bumper and thermoset

The main difference of thermosetting material is that it can be subjected to secondary heat treatment. Under the influence of high temperature, the material easily melts, becomes elastic, soft and can take any shape.

Thermosetting plastic, on the other hand, is very durable, resistant to high temperatures and mechanical damage.

Autobumpers made from thermosetting plastics are generally less prone to cracking due to the strength and durability of the material.

There are such types of thermoactive materials:

  • Polyethylene - used in production food packaging, packages, etc.;
  • Polystyrene - various heaters are made from them in construction, etc .;
  • Polypropylene - used in the production of auto parts, including auto bumpers, Food Industry etc.;
  • Polyvinylchloride - manufacturing insulating coatings for cable window technology etc.

Thermosetting materials are divided into:

  • Polyurethane - most plastic auto parts, both small and large, are made from this type;
  • Epoxy resins - used for joining and gluing different parts;
  • Fiberglass - used in the production of heavy-duty auto parts, including bumpers;
  • Phenol resins - needed in the manufacture of small auto parts, comp. boards, etc.

How to repair minor damage on a plastic auto bumper

Bumper damage is different types- from small scratches and small dents to serious cracks. Minor dents and scratches can be removed by yourself.

If the auto bumper is made of thermosetting plastic, then minor damage to it can be easily repaired using the polishing method with special chemicals. means.

For example, if there is a shallow scratch, then it can be treated with WD-40 all-purpose cleaner.

In order to polish a scratch or chip, you need a sponge, a soft cloth and a chemical reagent. First you need to clean the place of damage from dirt and dust with a sponge with water. After applying chem. spray or sponge. Next, the damaged area is intensively polished with a rag until no damage is visible on it.

The 2nd way to eliminate small dents and scratches on a plastic auto bumper is to straighten the damaged area with a hot air gun. The essence of the method is that the damaged surface is evenly heated with a building hair dryer. Due to heat treatment, the damage is leveled and straightened.

The method is simple and does not require special skills in execution, but it is not without drawbacks: there is a possibility of plastic deformation, heating with a hairdryer can only be used on unpainted places.

Also, simple and in an inexpensive way repairing minor damage on a plastic auto bumper is considered a wax pencil.

With it, scratches and chips are simply painted over. Chem. the composition of the pencil fills the damaged areas, aligning them with the general surface and forming a protective layer. The process of removing chips and dents with a wax pencil takes no more than 5 minutes.

What to do if there is a crack on the bumper - methods for repairing it

If a crack has formed on the bumper of the car as a result of damage, then simply cleaning and polishing this place will no longer work, in any case it will be visible.

To close the crack, you need to resort to more effective methods. There are several ways to repair cracks in plastic bumpers:

  1. sealing damage with a liquid polymer;
  2. welding with a rod;
  3. welding a crack with a hot air gun;
  4. repair using fiberglass;
  5. gluing plastic with a two-component composition.

Let's consider each of them in detail.

For the convenience of working with damaged areas, the autobumper must be removed and fixed on a stand. Before proceeding with the repair, you need to carefully clean the damaged area from dirt and dust, and if the bumper has already been repaired, then remove the remnants of the repair kit from the last time.

Experts advise treating damaged surfaces with any degreasing chemical before starting repairs. means.

We close the crack using liquid polymer

For this method you will need: a soldering iron, fine-grained sandpaper, a knife, wire cutters, steel wire, a hot air gun, a piece of protection for a car fender liner.

Closing process:

  1. We clean the edges of the crack with sandpaper.
  2. If the crack is long, then in several places along the edges it must be sewn with scraps of steel wire. The edges of the wire are bent and cut with wire cutters.
  3. Next, the edges of the crack are brought together and carefully soldered with a soldering iron.
  4. Fender liner made of polymer plastic, which melts easily and is suitable for making patches. Small strips (about 2-3 cm wide, 15-20 cm long and 2 mm thick) are cut from the protection web, which will be patches for soldering.
  5. The place where the patch will be applied and the patch itself is cleaned with a sharp knife.
  6. We heat the damaged area with a hair dryer in the place where the patch is applied. Next, we heat the strip-patch to a semi-liquid state, gradually applying it to the site of damage. This is repeated several times (with new strips) until the crack on the bumper is completely soldered.
  7. The resulting seam is cleaned with an emery wheel and prepared for painting.

Video instructions for repairing this method are given below.

  • Pros: cheap, easy, minimum set materials and means.
  • Cons: the likelihood of plastic deformation when heated.

How to weld a bumper with a rod

To weld a crack with a rod, you will need: a manual extruder for welding plastics, round-section polypropylene filler rods or polyethylene filler rods.

Welding process:

  1. We heat the manual extruder to the required temperature and put on a special nozzle into which the filler rod is inserted.
  2. We carefully solder the damaged area, forming a uniform seam around the entire perimeter of the crack using an extruder from a molten rod.

Pros: fast, does not require special skills.

Disadvantages: plastic is subject to deformation, specific tools and materials that are not always available.

See detailed video instructions below.

hot air welding

To weld a crack with a hot air gun, you will need: a hot air gun, a soldering iron, plastic rods, steel wire or rivets.

Welding process:

  1. We fix the torn edges of the damage and solder them with a soldering iron along the entire perimeter of the cracked surface. If the edges diverge strongly, then you can fix them with rivets or wire staples.
  2. We heat up the hot air gun and start welding: we melt the rod and put it on the bumper plastic crack, forming a seam along the perimeter of the damaged area.

Pros: fast, effective even for serious injuries.

Cons: An undamaged surface can be deformed from overheating.

Video instructions for working with a hot air gun below.

Repair with fiberglass

To repair an auto bumper using fiberglass, you will need: an emery wheel, grinder and grinder, fiberglass, epoxy resin, fine-grained sandpaper, hardener, brush.

Repair process:

  1. Cleaning damaged areas with an emery wheel and fine-grained sandpaper.
  2. Epoxy resin is diluted in plastic container with a hardener and even layers with a brush is applied to damaged areas.
  3. Patches are cut out of fiberglass, which are glued to the damaged areas and covered on top with a uniform layer of epoxy mortar.
  4. The bumper is dried, carefully polished with a machine and prepared for painting.

Pros: can repair damage of any size and thickness, suitable for thermosetting plastics.

Disadvantages: the reagent is toxic - work in chem. protection, fragility of the seal, even with a small impact, the embedded area may crack.

Video of fiberglass repair below.

How to glue plastic with a two-component composition

Required tools and materials: grinder. machine, emery wheel, two-component glue, degreaser, adhesive tape, construction mesh, spatula.

Bonding process:

  1. Cleaning the damaged area with fine-grained sandpaper (emery wheel).
  2. Surface treatment with a degreaser.
  3. Crack with outside the bumper is sealed with tape.
  4. A patch is cut out of the construction mesh and sits on the glue on the inside of the auto bumper. Glue is applied from above to the place of damage in several layers. Similarly, it is done from the outside after removing the adhesive tape.
  5. Excess glue is leveled with a spatula. The bumper is left to dry for 30-40 minutes.
  6. The glued surface is sanded and prepared for painting.

Pros: comfortable, glues quickly, retains elasticity.

Cons: Not suitable for large cracks.

Soldering large bumper damage

This procedure is performed using: soldering iron, reinforcing mesh, scissors.

Soldering process:

  1. A pre-cut patch of reinforcing mesh is applied to the inside of the bumper at the site of damage.
  2. Grid patches are soldered with a soldering iron inner surface autobumper, soldering the torn edges of the crack.
  3. From the outside, soldering is also done along the seam.
  4. After soldering, the seam is cleaned and prepared for painting.

Pros: fast and reliable way repair of large cracks, availability of materials.

Cons: only suitable for thermosetting plastic, over time the seam may disperse.

The method of car repair and the selection of material depends on the nature and extent of the defect.

cracks

With medium-strength impacts, not only damage to the paint layer occurs, but also plastic breaks. The intensity of operation and the quality of the material can lead to a rapid expansion of the crack in the bumper.

Repair of a plastic bumper with such defects is carried out by heat welding or soldering. The main difficulty lies in the correct combination of the two damaged parts. The parts are soldered with a polymer that has a comparable viscosity and melting temperature, similar to the material of a car bumper.

scratches

Only the surface was damaged, without violating the integrity of the entire structure. Depending on the depth of the defect, various methods of elimination are used. If the scratch is not deep, the usual painting is carried out at home, with forced drying with a low-temperature lamp (up to 60 ° C). Deep grooves are pre-primed and sanded.

dents

This type of deformation comes from mechanical or thermal effects on the car's bumper. Plastic deformation can be in compression or tension. Large defects are accompanied by damage to the paint layer.
Repair of plastic bumpers is carried out by heating with a special high-temperature technical hair dryer. After softening the material, it is given its original shape.

Sequencing

Do-it-yourself bumper repair can be divided into several stages:

  1. Restoring integrity. Are used various methods: gluing, welding or soldering.
  2. Applying putty to the seams, smoothing and grinding the surface.

heating method

Used tools and materials:

  • high temperature hair dryer;
  • grinder with polishing and grinding wheels;
  • degreasing liquid;
  • putty;
  • paints and varnishes.

Work production technology

A set of figured gaskets for straightening bumpers
  • The assembly is removed, the repair of the plastic bumper begins with a complete cleaning of this part of the car. All fasteners and foreign objects are removed.
  • The boundaries of the defective zone are outlined. The damaged work surface is degreased and dried.
  • The defect is heated from the inside of the part to prevent the paint layer from burning out. The process of softening the polymer should be carried out as quickly as possible so as not to affect neighboring areas.
  • After the material acquires elasticity, alignment is performed. Blows should not be applied to the bumper of the car, but to a special figured gasket with rounded edges.
  • After giving the site its original shape, clean the front side working area from dried paint. Grinding is carried out with a small approach to undamaged areas of the coating, so that the edges do not stand out.

Sizing

If the material for the car bumper is a heat-resistant polymer or fiberglass, then the rear bumper is repaired by gluing with fiberglass.

Tools and materials:

  • grinder with polishing and grinding wheel;
  • fiberglass;
  • adhesive compositions based on epoxy or polyester resin;
  • degreasing liquid;
  • putty.

Repair technology

  • The work surface is cleaned.
  • When fiberglass breaks at the ends of the cracks, threads are formed that prevent the parts to be glued tightly from being connected tightly, they must be removed.
  • The docked elements are fixed on the front side with a special high-strength adhesive tape.
  • From the inside, an epoxy or polyester resin is applied to the previously cleaned and degreased surface. adhesive mixture. The crack and adjacent 2-5 cm surfaces are processed directly.
  • A layer of fiberglass is impregnated with the same composition and applied to the damaged area. The number of layers of fabric should correspond to the thickness of the car bumper in the damaged area.
  • After the patch has hardened, remove the adhesive tape from the front side. Along the edge of the fault, the grinder makes a V-shaped file, the flat edge of the groove should converge into the middle of the patch. The resulting recess is filled with impregnated fiberglass in the same way, so as to protrude slightly above the surface.
  • After hardening, grinding, cleaning, degreasing and painting are carried out.

Welding and soldering

The most common repair method. There are many special repair kits on the market. The bumper repair kit may include:

  • special electrodes;
  • staples with short legs or mesh for reinforcement;
  • strips and plates of fusible polymer.

The set of tools used to repair the front bumper may include a high-temperature hair dryer or a soldering iron with a wide sting. Soldering cracks on a car bumper depends on the extent and nature of the damage.

Use of reinforcement

This method of repair at home is used if there are branched cracks. The edges are tightly reduced and fixed from the outside. The soldering iron should have a tip 1.5–2 cm wide. With translational movements, we press the sting into the plastic of the car bumper, placing it perpendicular to the crack.

Soldering is carried out along the entire length of the damage, the seams are made with a minimum indentation of up to 0.5 cm, metal staples or pieces of mesh are fused into the plastic every 2 cm. The resulting tubercles and recesses are smeared over the surface. The same procedure is performed from the outside, excluding reinforcement.

Application of plastic electrodes

Repairing a plastic bumper with your own hands using special electrodes is even easier than soldering. To do this, you will need a special crevice nozzle for a building hair dryer.

The edges of the cracks are preliminarily cut in a conical shape. A plastic electrode is placed on top. The flow of hot air is directed to the place of its connection with the treated surface.

Cracks, chips, scratches and other defects can greatly damage appearance body. Without exaggeration, we can say that the area most susceptible to this is the bumper.

Bumpers broke, break and will break regardless of the time of year or the experience of the driver. But no one wants to drive with an ugly body, so when a problem occurs, it must be fixed. Today we’ll talk about how to properly repair a plastic bumper with your own hands.

A little about the "diseases" of bumpers

A plastic bumper is not only an element of the body, aimed at giving it an aesthetic appearance, according to its functions, it must also protect people in a collision. Therefore, its structural arrangement is precisely such that, in almost any impact, breakage cannot be avoided.

There are not so many problems with a plastic bumper, for example:

  • Wear and tear by time. No wonder, even plastic that does not rot for 100 years is subject to adverse effects. environment(temperature difference, driving on rocky roads, wind, etc.).
  • impact on the part. Often this happens due to accidents, but there are cases in which the owner himself, through negligence, harms his car.
  • Scratches. A slight mechanical impact on the surface can cause this unpleasant problem.
  • Technical marriage. Not every manufacturer values \u200b\u200bits reputation, so a split of a plastic bumper due to poor production may well happen.
  • Breakaway fasteners. In case of unsuccessful dismantling, you can bring yourself trouble with your own hands.

It doesn’t matter what happened to you, it is advisable to repair the plastic car bumper as soon as possible.

Repair

If you decide to repair a plastic bumper at home, you need to find out some of the nuances of this matter. With which we will gladly introduce you. Let's start with the fact that repairs of any kind take place in the following 4 stages:

  1. Preparation.
  2. Restoring the integrity of the bumper.
  3. Grinding.
  4. Painting.

Below is a description of each of the stages in various variations.

Preparation

At the first stage, the broken body element is dismantled, which is cleaned of dirt as accurately as possible, washed and degreased. One of the most important points bumper repair is the definition of the material of its manufacture, how you will eliminate defects will depend on this. To do this, look at the letter designation on the inside of the part and decipher it using the Internet, mainly it is: PPTV (PP), PUR, CF, ABS.

Important! Marking is absent only on bumpers, which are made of fiberglass.

After carrying out the above measures, remove all paintwork in the place (s) of damage. It is better to take the next bumper repair kit, regardless of the type repair work:

  • wrenches and screwdrivers for removing the bumper;
  • material identical to your bumper;
  • water, sponge, degreaser;
  • brush and spatula;
  • putty;
  • primer;
  • car color paint.

Depending on the type of repair:

  • building hair dryer;
  • soldering iron or special welding;
  • wire;
  • metal grid;
  • hardener;
  • epoxy resin.

Restoring the integrity of the bumper

Soldering

Repair of plastic bumpers by soldering is the most common. Received great recognition due to the ease of execution, reliability and low cost of the process itself. To repair with this method it is necessary to do the following on a previously prepared surface of the part:

  1. If there is just a crack on the plastic bumper, this is great for repair, but if there are fragments and they are lost, you will have to insert foreign plastic instead, but with the same markings as on the bumper. In any case, lightly sand the sides of the joint. The main thing is that there is no dirt.
  2. Now heat the soldering iron and practice soldering the plastic (if there is an extra one, of course). It is very important to feel the reaction of the plastic to heat, so that it is more convenient to work.
  3. With gentle movements, start soldering both sides of the plastic bumper from the inside, adjusting the melted plastic into the funnel from the soldering tip. Connect the plastic along the entire length, and not just in its individual parts.
  4. Then, to give the greatest strength, it is necessary to solder a thin metal mesh. To do this, lay it on the parts that have just been connected, and solder the mesh into the plastic on both sides.
  5. Last step there will be a small connection with a soldering iron on the outside. Do this as carefully as possible so that later it will be easier to finish the rest of the work.

Also, the soldering process can be carried out using building hair dryer and special welding electrodes. The only difference from the above process is that before "welding" the two parts, it is necessary to slightly soften the plastic with a hairdryer. In both cases, the mesh can be replaced with wire and similar materials.

Advice! If you're working alone, use duct tape or duct tape to secure parts for soldering.

Repairing a plastic bumper with welding is much more difficult than with a soldering iron, and requires some skills, so it is better for beginners to prefer the first method in order to get the expected result.

Gluing

Repairing a bumper made of fiberglass or hard plastics cannot be done by soldering, here you need to glue it. The algorithm of actions is as follows:

  1. Lightly sand the surfaces to be bonded, degrease and align the parts, fixing with adhesive tape.
  2. Mix epoxy resin with hardener in the proportion recommended by the manufacturer.
  3. On the inside, grease the seam with the prepared mixture with an overlap of 5-7 cm in each direction. From above you need to roll a fiberglass patch lubricated with our glue, you can even use several layers to level the surface.
  4. After some time (when the patch has dried) with a grinder, it is necessary to saw through small horizontal grooves along the length of the seam.
  5. Tamp the fiberglass impregnated with glue into the cuts. In this way, the highest bond strength will be achieved.

Important! If the connection still seems unreliable to you, do similar operations on the outside of the bumper.

Getting rid of dents, scratches and repair of detached fasteners

The case is rare, but plastic bumpers sometimes do not break, but bend, forming a dent. You can get rid of it like this:

  1. Clean the area of the dent from dirt and paint.
  2. Pour in the boiling water evenly.
  3. The bumper should straighten out, if it doesn't, put on a glove and give it a little push from the inside.

Chips and scratches are also easy to remove, for this:

  1. Clean the area of paint.
  2. Sand down to a smooth surface.
  3. Paint over.

Broken fasteners can be attached in absolutely any way, from those described above, the main thing is to follow the exact technology of the process.

Grinding

After giving the bumper a whole state, it is necessary to polish it. It is done in places:

  • the outer side in a small radius from the seam;
  • the seam itself must be sanded on both sides;
  • other irregularities that may interfere with painting.

Important! Drive to grinder or sandpaper should be about 200-250P grit.

Painting

The final touch in the repair will be painting the bumper. It is carried out in three stages, namely:

  1. Putty. Choose a special tool for plastic, apply and level the bumps. Again, sand it all down.
  2. Primer. Apply to the treated putty and wait for it to dry completely.
  3. Painting and varnishing. First apply the base - a special solvent. After, paint the desired color, varnish everything at the end.

Important! If you doubt that the surface prepared for painting is sufficiently even, check it. It is done like this: apply paint that does not match the color of the bumper, all the irregularities will be clearly expressed on it, then erase it and bring the surface “to mind”.

So the article has come to an end, we hope you have learned how to properly repair plastic bumper. Good luck on the roads!

Do-it-yourself plastic bumper repair video:

The bumper of the car serves not only to give the whole silhouette a certain completeness, but also to protect its main components and assemblies from minor mechanical influences. In minor accidents, the bumper, both front and rear, suffers first. Do-it-yourself repair of a plastic bumper in this case is feasible, and it is quite simple to do.

Some of the most common bumper repairs are:

  • Scratches, chipped paint, peeling paint;
  • Dents and similar defects that were formed as a result of any chemical reactions;
  • cracks;
  • Breaking through the bumper, that is, the moment when a hole appears in it due to the spalling of a separate part of it.

Repair to remove scratches from the paintwork can be called the simplest and less costly in terms of time and money.

Recovery steps

So, whatever the damage caused to the bumper, do-it-yourself restoration work will consist of the following steps:

  • Preparing the bumper for work;
  • Work with the inner surface;
  • Alignment of the front part;
  • Priming of the leveled surface
  • Establishment of defects after alignment;
  • Sanding of putty surface;
  • Re-filling (if necessary);
  • Bumper painting.

Preparing the bumper for work

Preparation consists in dismantling the body element, washing it and cleaning it from dust, dirt, and other contaminants.

In addition, before direct repair, you should choose a method, which is affected by the material of manufacture of the body element.

If there is no such information, then you can find it out by looking at the inside of the bumper itself. There may be the following designations:

  • PPTV or PP - polypropylene;
  • PUR - polyurethane;
  • GF15, GF30, PAG6, ABS are hard plastics.

I must say that if the element is made of fiberglass, then there will be no marking at all.

After determining the material of the element, the old paintwork is removed from the damaged area.

Working with the inner surface

If there are cracks or broken parts of plastic or fiberglass, do-it-yourself repairs begin from the inside. You can do this in two simple ways:

  • Using a conventional soldering iron;
  • using special electrodes.

The soldering iron is heated to the desired temperature and soldering begins. The sting is carried out along the seam, along the crack. In this case, it is necessary to ensure that the molten plastic moves into the groove.

It is necessary to solder the entire seam, and not in its individual places.

After the preliminary do-it-yourself soldering is completed, the seam is additionally fastened with metal staples using a construction stapler.

To give such a seam even more strength, soldering is carried out through a metal mesh, which is “soldered” into the surface of the bumper, connecting the two halves with each other. different parties from a crack. I must say that it is best to repair only polyurethane body elements with a soldering iron and a mesh.

Today, more and more often you can find the so-called electrodes, which are designed for plastic and have a rectangular cross section.

Do-it-yourself work with them is carried out using a building hair dryer. To it should be a special nozzle ranging in size from 2 to 10 mm.

If work is being done on a bumper made of fiberglass or hard plastic, then soldering it simply will not work. In this case, do-it-yourself repairs should consist in the process of gluing individual elements.

Step-by-step instruction looks like that:

  • Working with edges, that is, removing protruding villi. You can do this with a grinder;
  • Combination of details. They need to be fixed. To do this, ordinary adhesive tape is glued along the seams on the front side, which will hold the individual parts in place;
  • After that, you need to prepare a mixture epoxy resin, that is, add a hardener to the resin itself in desired proportion, and stir;
  • From the inside, the entire seam is lubricated with the prepared composition. In addition, it is also necessary to lubricate an area of 5 cm on each side of the crack;
  • The same composition is impregnated with a thin "patch" made of fiberglass, which is applied over the crack;
  • Such "patches" made of fiberglass must be put in several pieces until their total thickness becomes equal to the thickness of the bumper itself;
  • We wait for some time until the "patch" is completely dry;
  • Using a grinder on the front side, we make grooves along the entire length of the crack;
  • Then we fill them with fiberglass, which we pre-impregnate with an adhesive;
  • We wait for time to dry and grind the surface.

Face leveling

Glued and puttied bumper

After performing work on the inside, it is necessary to completely align the front.

To do this, the adhesive tape is removed, if it was there, and grinding is performed using a special power tool or sandpaper. Grain in this case it is better to choose P240 or even P200.

Further work

It must be said that front side can also be soldered, as is the case with a fiberglass bumper.

A groove is also made on the plastic, which is filled with a repair mixture.

After that, a layer of putty is applied to the seam with your own hands. Naturally, you only need to use a special putty for plastic bumpers.
