The new Russian-made car Lada X Ray is available with three different engine options. Among which it will be possible to choose both a powerful engine designed to increase the speed characteristics and cross-country ability of the car, as well as more economical options with lower power ratings for people who prefer to have an engine with low fuel consumption under the hood.

New internal combustion engines have 106, 110 and 122 hp in their arsenal. And they are installed depending on the configuration of Lada Xray. AvtoVAZ engines installed on Lada X Ray are made in compliance with European quality standards and are as safe as possible for the environment. Each unit has individual features and specific technical characteristics, which will be discussed later in the text.

Possible ICE options for Lada X Ray

Lada X Ray has three engines offered to customers to choose from:

  • VAZ-21129 - this option is used in the basic version of Lada X Ray and has a capacity of 106 horses;
  • HR16DE - engine from foreign partners, is reliable and has 110 hp;
  • VAZ 21179 is the most powerful engine that is installed on Lada Xray, it has 122 hp.

All engines that are installed on the Lada X Ray run on gasoline, and the most powerful version has a special VAZ automated manual gearbox.

Engine VAZ-21129

This motor, designed for installation on Lada Xray, differs from analogues in a special intake system. During its operation at low speeds, air is supplied differently - through elongated intake channels. In the case of an increase in speed, air begins to flow through short channels. As a result, the composition and consistency of the fuel mixture changes, in the first case it is slightly saturated with oxygen, and vice versa in the second. This principle of operation allows you to significantly increase the power of the unit with a relatively low fuel consumption. In the absence of such a system, a similar apparatus produces no more than 98 horses.

This engine in the Lada X Ray will only be produced in tandem with a Renault gearbox with 5 speed gears. The power unit VAZ-21129 has the following characteristics:

  • volume - 1597 cubic centimeters;
  • cylinders in the amount of 4 pieces;
  • 16 valves;
  • belt drive;
  • the cylinder has a diameter of 82 millimeters;
  • power - 106 hp

Lada X Ray, equipped with such an engine, is capable of gaining speed up to one hundred km / h in 11.9 seconds. With these parameters, the car is extremely economical. Driving cycles and fuel consumption:

HR16DE and its features

This engine, which you can get with the new Lada X Ray, has the same volume - 1.6 liters. But with a similar volume, it has more power, which is 110 horsepower. HR16DE was developed for the Russian car by a friendly Renault-Nissan concern. He managed to establish himself on some models of these manufacturers and is widely known around the world. Therefore, we can say with confidence that the Lada Xray has a world-class unit. The new engine has a number of fundamental differences in relation to VAZ devices, which are equipped with cast-iron blocks and conventional belts. The unit has an excellent reputation and promising technical characteristics. However, time will tell which option is better.

The HR16 is equipped with an aluminum cylinder block. The cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy. Instead of a timing belt, this device has a stronger and more durable metal chain. The engine is made without hydraulic compensators, but at the same time, it is provided with a system for changing the phases of gas distribution. There are two injectors for each cylinder.

The HR16 engine is installed on the Lada X Ray car in combination with a French gearbox from Renault. According to the reviews of motorists, we can conclude that the HR16 has excellent dynamics and works flawlessly. Engine Specifications:

The most powerful engine for Lada Xray is made directly by AvtoVAZ. It has excellent technical characteristics and is combined with a robotic gearbox. For Lada X Ray, the development of this unit was carried out by a branch of AvtoVAZ called SuperAvto.

More volume in this engine is achieved by increasing the stroke of the piston itself, and not by boring the cylinder block, as was done previously. Changed the size of the connecting rods and crankshaft. The engine assembly uses foreign graphite pistons from the well-known brand Federal-Mogul.

This new engine, used in the Lada Xray, has fewer small parts, which increases its reliability and performance without affecting performance. The unit has impressive torque. Lada Xray, equipped with such an engine, consumes significantly less oil. The VAZ 21179 engine for Lada Xray has the following technical characteristics:

  • volume - 1797 cubic centimeters;
  • 4 cylinders / 16 valves;
  • timing belt drive;
  • D cylinder - 84 mm;

Initially, for Lada X Ray, three types of engines were offered and, accordingly, produced. All three options use a 16-valve mechanism, 5-speed mechanics from Renault, fuel - gasoline with an octane rating of 92 or more.

Thanks to the use of this unique system, it was possible to squeeze such power out of a seemingly standard solution. Instead of the usual 98 horses, the motor produces 106. This type of motor was previously used in other Lada models. A characteristic feature: the use of a timing belt (gas distribution mechanism) for the timing drive, the breakage of which entails serious consequences.
The second option is the same volume of 1.6 liters, but already 110 liters. With. This is a unique development of the Renault-Nissan concern. In Nissan cars, it is marked as HR16, in Reno - H4M. Here, the basis is no longer the usual cast-iron block, but lighter aluminum. The cylinder heads are also aluminum. A chain has already been used to drive the timing.
And the most powerful version with a volume of 1.8 liters, 122 liters. With. - own unique development of VAZ-21179. The increased piston stroke, the rejection of small elements in favor of structural strength and the replacement of some parts with foreign-made analogues with slightly changed characteristics made it possible to achieve greater stability and increase engine life, and also reduced the consumption of consumables. In the timing drive, we return to the belt again.

The first two variations with a 1.6-liter "iron heart" use a 5MT gearbox (5-speed manual). The last 1.8 liter version is available in both variations: five-speed manual and robotic.

Choosing your engine

In addition to the general technical data of each future owner of X, Ray is more interested in what distinguishes each of the configuration options in practice, which one will fully satisfy his needs and suit him better. Let's compare their characteristics, first listing the data characterizing the 106 hp Lada X Ray engine. s., and then 110 liters. s., 122 l. With. MT and 122 l. With. AMT:

  • fuel consumption Lada XRay in the city 9.3 / - / 9.3 / 8.6 liters;
  • with a mixed cycle - 7.2 / - / 7.1 / 6.8 liters;
  • on the highway - 5.9 / - / 5.8 / 5.8 liters;
  • maximum developed speed 176/171/179/186 km/h;
  • acceleration time to the first hundred 11.4 / 10.3 / 10.3 / 10.9 seconds.

We can say that in terms of speed parameters, the version with an automatic transmission of 122 liters is the leader. s, and Lada with AMT consumes less fuel. This is not surprising. However, this, of course, affected the cost of the model. And if the price tag of the basic configuration Lada XRay, whose power unit breaks 106 hp under the hood. s., starts from 529 thousand rubles, then the option offering the Lada X Ray engine in 122 liters. With. AMT, available already for 634 thousand.

A small nuance is that the equipment of the latter starts only with “Advanced”. For accuracy of comparison: the “Advanced” package for the first option is estimated at 584 thousand rubles. The “Advanced” modification differs from the basic “Optima” version by the presence of power windows in the rear doors, heated front seats, electric and electric heating of exterior mirrors, air conditioning, and a cooled glove box.

From the stylistic moments: the Optima package cost stamped 15-inch wheels and external handles in body color, while the improved version received alloy wheels. This rating did not include the stand-alone Lada XRay Yubileinaya, on which there is an engine of 110 hp. With. For its style and top-end equipment, the model is already priced at 739 and 769 thousand rubles (for a manual and automatic transmission).

Back in June 2016, a 110-hp powertrain option. With. was removed from mass production, and now you can only see it on the Lada X Ray in the anniversary version.

The first car for the new 1.8-liter engine from AVTOVAZ was the Lada X Ray crossover. Since the engine is new, the features of its operation, capabilities and reliability are not well known to LADA XRAY buyers. But some nuances were revealed during the LADA XRAY resource test, which was conducted by the Autoreview magazine. During the test, the engine suddenly began to intensively consume oil and even blue smoke appeared. At the end of the resource test, the LADA XRAY engine was disassembled and the problem was found out. Also, representatives of the magazine assessed the wear of the motor. What can we expect from the new VAZ-21179 engine - the one with a volume of 1.8 liters? Colleague Yuri Vetrov told a lot about its design, and I happened to watch this unit during our accelerated life tests of the Lada XRAY hatchback, and not just watch it. The motor threw out such a knee (not to be confused with a crankshaft) that as soon as the XRAY more or less safely reached the finish line, I immediately dismantled this engine. It is interesting, from what point did he suddenly open an maslozhor, and even with an alarming gray haze? Well, I collected it later.

Let me remind you that the engine is built on the basis of block 1.6, but with the same height and diameter of the cylinders, it received additional channels for lubrication and cooling systems. As for the rest of the details, they are almost all original.

The working volume was increased by increasing the piston stroke, for which a different crankshaft was needed. The pistons and connecting rods have also been changed, with the latter shortened by 5mm to keep the block stock stock. By the way, shortening the connecting rod is a measure that minders do not welcome very much: the lateral forces perceived by the skirt increase. With an increase in the piston stroke, its average speed also increased - by as much as 11%. So there are prerequisites for more intensive wear of the connecting rod and piston group.

In the block head there are other camshafts, an inlet phase shifter, gas channels are expanded, and valves are also enlarged.

I will omit further details for the time being, but the above is enough to consider the engine new. And I will not reproach its creators for giving priority not to peak power, but to torque: those 148 Nm that a “regular” 1.6 engine produces at 4200 rpm are available here already from two thousand, and then up to 170 Hm. And I will not reproach the engine for gluttony - however, if we are talking about gasoline, and not about oil. As for the oil, the motor began to eat up his engine right from the very beginning.

As I noticed this, the first thing I looked at was the instructions. Here in the little book for Vesta, which was equipped with a "regular" 1.6 engine, it says in Russian and white that oil consumption is allowed at three ppm of fuel consumption. For example, with a gasoline consumption of 10 l / 100 km, oil should burn no more than 0.03 liters (or about 25 g). A lot, of course, but a landmark is indicated when to start sounding the alarm. I did not find such information in the instructions for Ixrey at all, but along the way I got the impression that the manuals for these two machines were made by people working not only in different factories, but also in different countries. Sometimes the same terms have different meanings!

Meanwhile, before the first MOT, which, according to the conditions of our tests, we carried out not at 15,000 kilometers, as prescribed, but at 12,000, XRAY absorbed almost four liters of oil. But even worse, a smoky plume stretched behind the typewriter.

We, as usual in the course of resource tests, reported the trouble to VAZ specialists. They took a break (we didn’t take it, XRAY continued the test run around the test site) - and after three weeks they informed that on the batch of engines, including ours, there were defective Chinese-made Mahle valves - with rough traces of machining. And then they generously offered us to replace the head assembly under warranty: they say, this campaign will affect all owners of cars with engines from this defective batch. We already agreed (after all, our tests simulate real operation, albeit in a highly compressed form), as oil consumption began to wane. Yes, so rapidly that it has halved compared to the original!

Why such a miraculous healing? An autopsy, only an autopsy will show.

Before disassembling, I measured the compression - and again I was surprised: not only did it not fall, but in two cylinders, the first and third, it even increased - from 14.7 to 15.1. And the specialists of the petrochemical concern Total (who monitored the condition of the motor according to the analysis of oil samples regularly supplied by us) go there too. Like, if before the middle of the run the motor wore out 9-13% faster than the norm, then after 20 thousand it went, as they say, to zero. And at the finish line it showed a wear coefficient of 0.69 - that is, less than its own kind during normal operation.

I will not give a catchphrase that rashly flew off the tongue in the course of even a partial disassembly of the motor. Today, after all, few people are puzzled by maintainability: they shoved the engine under the hood, and goodies. The French have long been noticed that they are much more for extraordinary ideas, and XRAY, let me remind you, is Renault's flesh and blood - it was built on the B0 platform. And it is also clear that in the process of upgrading the engine, forced measures were taken, which also did not at all facilitate the work of the repairman.

First, I decided to look at the condition of the pistons and cylinders, which is why I started by unscrewing the pan. You can't get to the two rear bolts, you need to move the gearbox. Okay, I move the units apart, but the key does not fit into the resulting gap: now the flywheel is a hindrance. Removing the box and the clutch was not part of my plans, therefore I turned the smallest head - and together with the extension cord, not without the help of a hammer, drove it into the slot. Looking ahead, I’ll inform you that before reinstalling, I finalized the pallet with a chisel and a file: the tool now passes for a sweet soul, and the design has become easier.

Then it was the turn of the intake manifold: it is necessary to unscrew the bolts and nuts securing it to the head. Fortunately, after the insurance crash test, the destroyed front bumper was already removed, and access to the fasteners has improved significantly. Under the collector, by the way, there is a ramp with nozzles - and I don’t envy the one who starts changing them.

And here, it would seem, is a completely simple matter - to drain the coolant. But to access the plug on the block, you must first remove the starter! Along the way, he also turned off the generator - it will be easier to put the auxiliary drive belt back on.

With the removal of the front and valve covers of the engine, things went easier - and the toothed pulleys, rollers, belt and camshafts opened up. Turning the crankshaft to the top dead center in the first cylinder, carefully put a lot of marks on all the details, because the pulleys are fixed on the shafts only by tightening the bolts.

After removing the head, I saw the pistons covered with a greasy layer of soot. Here it is, the reason for the increased compression! Unscrewing the connecting rod caps, removed them. The working surface of the cylinders, let me remind you, is called a mirror, I saw it: not the slightest trace of wear! At least by eye.

On this, in anticipation of the arrival of VAZ specialists, I suspended work, and a couple of days later, in the presence of the factory workers, I began measuring the details. The indicator needle barely deviates, showing minimal wear. There are zeros along the axis of the crankshaft, and the gap between the pistons and cylinders is the same everywhere - 0.06 mm, only three "hundreds" more than the new motor.

Disassembly of the head took place in the usual manner. Frankly, I expected to see valves completely overgrown with soot, but the picture is much more favorable. The seats are completely clean, but the risks on the valve stems are clearly visible! Because of them, as the factory workers suggested, the oil was pumped through the caps. I hope that their statement that the path to marriage is blocked will also be confirmed. And for myself, the decrease in the maslozhora in the process of testing is explained by running in: the irregularities on the rods gradually smoothed out - fortunately, without having time to cause fatal damage to the caps.

It's time to fold the motor out of this heap of parts again, but first the most dreary procedure is cleaning all the mating surfaces from the old sealant. Then, having lubricated with oil, I introduce the piston group into place. I tighten the connecting rod caps, pull the head, then the shafts, pulleys, belt, rollers go ... At my request, the VAZ workers brought a drawing of a mandrel for fixing the shafts and installation instructions. It is much easier to work with rigging, now you can’t go wrong with the phases - and it’s no wonder that everything coincided with the marks that I made ahead of time.

An exciting moment of launch - and the engine rustled at idle. No haze.

Or maybe it was worth replacing the head, and even as an assembly, under warranty? I will not take the liberty of giving confident advice. By the way, colleagues called five branded VAZ stations and found out that so far the owners of Lad with 1.8 engines had not complained about the oil burner.

I have come to the same conclusion for myself. If I faced the choice of a new Lada, I would prefer the one with the 1.8 engine. "Cubes" were added a little, but the traction is good. I don't have any concerns about reliability. The main thing is that the lesson should go to the future for the Vazovites: you need to carefully keep an eye on suppliers, especially those that carry goods from China.

The youngest engine in the Lada Xray line is an atmospheric engine from VAZ.

The engine is already familiar (VAZ 21129) and should not bring serious problems, but it is still necessary to take into account possible “slippery moments”, as well as know the options for solving them:

The unstable operation of the VAZ engine and the impossibility of starting it are probably the most frequent "hops" of this engine model. They can be triggered by irregularities in the operation of the timing, the occurrence of problems with fuel pressure, air “leakage”, broken throttle, as well as a malfunction of some sensors.

Also, the unit may lose power. The main reason for this is a burnt gasket, resulting in reduced compression in the cylinders, as well as component wear (burning out of pistons, wear of rings and cylinders). However, the owners of the new Xray do not face such problems (at least at first).

The Lada Xray engine (VAZ 21127) may start to tune ... Flushing the engine nozzles or replacing high-voltage wires will help with this. But the procedure does not always help, so pay attention to the operation of the ignition coil, candles and measure compression. However, it is best to immediately go to the service station.

Sometimes there is a problem with warming up the engine to operating temperature. "Pill" one - change the thermostat.

Noises and knocks in the Lada Xray engine cause hydraulic lifters and problems with main and connecting rod bearings. Sometimes it can be pistons ...

More powerful (but not much) is a naturally aspirated engine from Nissan.

After a run of 120 thousand kilometers, the alternator belt and the “tensioner” roller bearing may require replacement. Pay attention to the operation of the water pump on the Xray. So far, the engine hasn't shown any major problems. The rest of the work is carried out strictly according to the regulations of T.O. after 15 thousand km. Up to 100 thousand km, the oil should be changed every 15 thousand km. The manufacturer recommends synthetics: ELF Evolution SXR 5W-30 or ELF Evolution SXR 5W-40. After 100 thousand km, an oil change should be carried out at least 8 thousand km. Spark plugs replacement strictly after 15 thousand km.

The VAZ/Ricardo engine is the third engine in the Lada Xray hatchback line.

The most powerful engine does not have any serious and obvious diseases, but it does not hurt to pay attention to the following questions:

1. Stretching the timing chain. This is typical for these engines. The following symptoms will tell you about this breakdown: the engine does not start well, there are traction failures, idling floats, and increased noise. The problem is treated by simply replacing the chain, the chain resource is approximately 150 thousand km ..

2. The 1.8 engine on Xray does not start ... The car does not start right away, but from the nth time. The issue is resolved by cleaning the throttle and / or replacing the fuel pump mesh.

3. Quiet but annoying motor whistle. You probably recognized the source - this is the alternator belt, it is solved by replacing the roller with the belt.

4. It twitches at low revs, this is a feature of the engine, the problem is solved by the new firmware of the “brain” of Lada Xray.

These Xray engines have short-lived catalysts, the replacement costs decently, the throttle valve likes to get dirty and the reaction to the accelerator pedal decreases, this issue is solved by simply cleaning it, but in general the motor is ordinary, which it is for a budget car.

Lada X Ray 1.8 so far it is equipped only with a robotic machine. It will be possible to fully appreciate the dynamics of the new engine in the near future, when Lada Vesta 1.8 with a manual box appears on sale. For now, let's talk about the design and characteristics of the new VAZ-21179 engine with a volume of 1774 cm3 and a power of 122 hp, which develops a solid torque of 170 Nm. By the way, thanks to the high torque, even with an automatic transmission, Lada XRay 1.8 has good dynamics and moderate fuel consumption.

Structurally new engine, it is an in-line 4-cylinder naturally aspirated engine with a 16-valve timing mechanism. There is a belt in the timing drive. The block is cast iron, and the cylinder head is made of aluminum. The block sizes of 1.8-liter and 1.6-liter VAZ engines are the same. The pistons are also the same size. But the connecting rods and camshaft have different sizes, as a result of an increased piston stroke and an increase in displacement.

From the design features engine Lada X Ray 1.8 It can be noted the presence of high-quality Korean components. These are foreign oil pump, water pump and lightweight camshafts. But the main thing is, of course, a system for changing the valve timing with an actuator (phase shifter) on the engine intake shaft. Most likely next year, the Russians will be able to buy a Lada X Ray 1.8 with a manual transmission. The main problem that AvtoVAZ engineers faced when testing a new unit with a manual transmission was the inability of the box to “digest” the high torque. There were even design options in which the 1.8-liter engine was combined with mechanics from Renault Duster. However, in the end, VAZ decided to use its own 5-speed manual to upgrade it in order to fit it under a fairly powerful engine. After the revision of the VAZ-2180 manual transmission, a modification of the mechanical unit appeared under the factory designation VAZ-21807. It is this manual box that will soon appear on the Lada X Ray 1.8 liter.
